  • "Propel" (2018, rearrangement 2024)
    Taikography/Choreography/Composition:
Joe Small, w/ STE members’ creative features.
Nebuta Bayashi excerpts, incl. Korogashi - traditional, modified from Joe's study with Nimoku Gumi in Japan.
    Costume: Joe Small
    Lighting: James Murphy
    Videography: Jeff Bagg
Sound: Scott Burgess (combined w/ Joe's Q8n camera audio)
Notes: Created during Joe’s 2017~18 guest artist residency with the Sydney-based ensemble TAIKOZ, "Propel" simply aims to ‘propel’ the spirits of audience and performers alike through energizing rhythmic interplay and choreography. The introduction is inspired by Joe's ongoing research and activities in the Nebuta festival music and dance of the Northern Japan city of Aomori, known as Nebuta Bayashi. This new arrangement finds inspiration in and invokes the spirit of Nebuta -- to raise our spirits out of the doldrums and to find 'propulsion' in Nebuta's playful melodies, rhythms, and the Haneto (‘bouncer/jumper’) dancers.
