Dishwasher Cleaning - Top Rack Doesn't Clean

  • Yikes! Thank you to a viewer for mentioning to me about disconnecting the power. I forgot to add that to the video. Yeah, disconnect the power before getting started. Chances of the machine kicking on are remote, but depending on your model you might risk an electric shock if you don't disconnect the power. In my situation I have my dishwasher connected to an outlet under the sink so that it can just be un-plugged. If you don't have that, then you can just flip the breaker off. Regardless if it has a plug, or is hard wired, it SHOULD be wired on a circuit breaker dedicated to just the dishwasher.
    ...
Hey to all - thank you so much for your kind words. I really am glad that so many have found this video to be helpful. For the money we pay for such appliances it's definitely frustrating when things go wrong and hire repairs can cost as much as a new appliance.
With that said, I'm working on more such videos for household maintenance and repairs and woodworking projects as well. So PLEASE subscribe and get informed when the latest video is released.
    ...
If you decide to take the plunge and clean up your dishwasher using this process, please comment below and tell us if it solved your problem and how long it took you to follow this process.
Someone commented below that "time is money" and that's very true in many respects. But for some people like myself, I have a little more time than money and many times I'll figure out how to fix something before even considering hiring a pro or buying a new item. If it's something within my skill set and capacity to do, I'll usually fix it myself. Sometimes I find out that the most probable fix to something is either not worth my time to fix myself, is outside my capacity (time and/or tools) to do a thing, or simply too expensive to do even on my own and I'm just as well buying a new item.
There's nothing wrong with hiring a pro and using the time bought with pro service to enjoy doing something else, or earning money to pay the pro. However, empowered with the knowledge from this video, I think this process shouldn't take you more than an hour of your time - two tops. Now compare what you earn in an hour or two to the minimum charge for a pro to just come to the house.
    ...
Someone e-mailed me about how running a couple cycles with white vinegar solved their problem. Assuming that was a real email from a real person and not some lame attempt at a hack of some sort (I'm really defensive about such things) that's great if it works for you, but it doesn't get the crap out of the trap. Furthermore, using vinegar too often is hard on the dishwasher. Honestly I don't remember why, but my owners manual suggests cleaning with vinegar once in a long while, but warns against using it too much. I think it may be hard on the plastic parts of the dishwasher.
    ...
I recently found this informative video about how dishwashers work in general. You may find it helpful, so I thought I would share it.
    • How Does A Dishwasher ...
    ...
Subject Message below - Dishwasher Cleaning
It's really annoying when the dishwasher does not clean properly. In my case the bottom rack of the dishwasher was cleaning well, but the top rack of the dishwasher was not coming out clean at all. In fact, the top rack was barely getting wet.
When this happens the wash water is not being cycled correctly or completely.
The possible causes are either there is a clog somewhere in the system, or there is a problem with the pump. Fortunately in my case the problem was a clog - easier and cheaper to correct.
The clog can be anywhere in the system path from the pump up to the sprayer at the top of the dishwasher. In my case the clog was at the food chopper down near the pump. It's relatively easy to get to, with a little patience:-) But it helps a lot to know what to expect.
This video features a Kitchen Aid dishwasher Model # KUDS03STWH3.
Even if you have a different model dishwasher this video should help give you an idea of what to expect and how to do things.
While you are going through this process it's a good time to give the dishwasher a good cleaning. A clean dishwasher produces cleaner dishes. Using vinegar in the dishwasher will help to clean out the systems in general, but vinegar alone will not give it the dishwasher the cleaning it may need from time to time. A dishwasher can accumulate a lot of build up grime and just plain gunk from food and hard water. The only way to really clean the dishwasher well is to give the dishwasher a good scrub down. This video shows you how to do that too.
I hope that you find this video helpful.
Please let me know if helped you with your dishwasher.

I just dont get WHY people put VERY dirty dishes in a dishwasher. Use a RUBBER SPATULA to remove most of the food into the garbage! The screens etc in a d/w aren't meant to tackle corn and other foods. You have to teach your kids this too! Even the $20. Cascade Platinum Plus has a hard time removing dried on milk in a 16 oz glass!

Just had to thank you. We followed your directions and were lucky that our dishwasher looks exactly like this one. Our filter and grinder were pretty dirty and we cleaned them, but the real issue turned out to be a small hole in the plastic feed tube assembly. We did a temporary repair with duct tape and the dishwasher worked perfectly. We just need to order the part now.

Absolutely perfect! Cleaned it this morning......superb! Many thanks from Georgia!
Found multiple fragments of my disintegrating "pull out utensil basket" in the blade compartment....Had my unit for 7 years and wasn't interested in buying a new one which is where I thought I was headed. Money saved, and easy. More importantly, I'm not a "handyman" when it comes to repairs. With that, this one of the easier things I've completed relative to appliance repair. Cheers!

+Jody Logan I haven't gotten around to posting the video footage I took of it yet, but the bottom of my utensil tray was also disintegrating. I repaired it using galvanized, hardware cloth from the hardware store. I cut it about double the width, of the tray and folded it over so the ends met in the center. Doing that kept most of the sharp edges from sticking out the sides. Then I tied it in place underneath the tray using plastic zip ties.
Clipped the tails off the zip ties and used a metal file to smooth over any sharp edges.

At home with the 2 kids while the husband is at work. Watched your video and felt confident! but then the dishwasher leaked during the vinegar wash. Put everything back- with NO spare parts- and now the control panel is acting up. but it is running. Thanks for the video. the instructions were really clear. And YOU just saved me $200 up here in NJ- that is IF everything goes back to normal.

Thanks. This worked perfectly. The top spinner was clogged completely with debris and the food grinder was filled with what looked like chia seeds. The dishwasher was installed when I bought the house, so maybe the previous owners ate flax or chia seeds. Saved myself $500-$600 for a new dishwasher.

I just followed these instructions on a 14 year old KitchenAid Superba, it had one more screw than on the video, but the instructions worked great. The big clog on mine was the mini disposal was completely blocked. Plus there was a small plastic cap which was probably contributing. I think the cleaning will make the dishwasher work much better.
    Thanks.

Had a repair guy come and run a couple simple tests and say "yep, you need a new wash pump motor. This one doesn't have the power anymore." Thank you SO MUCH for this video! I have just taken apart my dishwasher and cleaned the parts (they were caked in mould and other gunk). I found half a pistachio shell, a chickpea, and an oval metal clothing tag (??), no wonder it didn't work! I am just running the vinegar cycle and afterwards will re-assemble it which shouldn't take too long. Thank you again for your very helpful video, it was easy to follow! Dishwashers are no longer a mystery to me! It didn't take me very long, it has only been about 40 minutes and I'm just waiting for the dishwasher to finish so I can pop the other pieces back in. You probably saved me the cost of a new dishwasher. When dishes weren't getting clean, the appliance repair guy said all we could do was run it with a vinegar rinse and not use as much dishwasher soap. Recently the water stopped spraying on the top rack. So I did a search on these kinds of problems and your video popped up. I didn't realize how simple it would be to clean everything up. There was all kinds of stuff down in the grinder causing it to stop working. The spray arms also had dried food and detergent residue clogging the holes. Thanks so much for the video--I am the hero on Father's Day.

This worked like a charm! Only side note and it could be our model, but we needed to put all the cleaned parts back in before running it with the vinegar cycle. When we tried running it without the parts, the dishwasher leaked horribly from the bottom. Thinking I shifted something erroneously with the seals causing the leak, we pulled off the front panel to pop off and clean underneath the bottom seal, reassembled the door only to find out it was still leaking. As we were getting ready to order a new dishwasher, on a whim we put all the parts back in, ran the dishwasher and the leaks stopped! Now our dishwasher is even cleaner and working brand new! Thanks again for the detailed video! Model: KitchenAid KUDS35FXSS5

Dude, I hope you are still reading your comments. You are the bomb! My top rack for wasn't cleaning, and after much research, I followed your instructions. Success! What sets you apart is your management of the bottom assembly. Everyone else holds the central tap and spins the sprayer arm to undo. Well, that plastic gets brittle over time, and I've had it break off before. It is best to take it off intact the way you do. So for those reading this, this one step is the most important take away. Keep up the great work, and I am grateful!

I took the opportunity to take all of the water conduits apart and clean them. Top sprayer arm had build up in it I found. Used CLR, shop vac, brushes and old fashioned hard work. Works like new. So yes, I would break it all down and clean inside and out.

    • @dpfrz544
      @dpfrz544 8 лет назад +1

Maybe I didn't address your question properly. Yes, take off the cover for the chopper. I had debris and calcifications in there too. It may be stuck, use hot water and CLR to loosen it and pry carefully. But don't remove the chopper blade assembly unless you are really good at these things. You should be able to clean thoroughly with chopper blade in place.

    • @dogwoodtales
      @dogwoodtales  8 лет назад

If you are referring to the part at 5:55 then yes it has to come off to clean out under it.
It may also reveal if the chopper is in place. Some have reported their chopper as having fallen off.
Like dpfrz544 said, don't remove the chopper. I never had to, thankfully, but I think it can get tricky.

I searched for a repair video after figuring out how to remove the initial water channel for the top rack, expecting to find clogs or small orifices to clean but finding none. Though a different Kitchen Aid model, I found the machines similar enough to use your instructions with most parts being identical. I never would have started unscrewing the base parts had I not had you there for guidance - thanks! The toughest part was that my food chopper cover did not want to come out, and it looked totally integrated with the large base part underneath it. I almost gave up, but saw by your video that I really wasn't getting anywhere without insisting it come out. I finally was able to pry it loose, and sure enough, it had a bunch of gunk including a piece of plastic blocking the water flow through the screen. I am currently running the vinegar wash load through, then will have to reassemble. Thanks again!

You just saved me $1000 and a lot of pain. Thank you. It wouldn't empty, and it would not wash to top Rack. I had shells soap scumb and gunk everywhere. 2 hours of cleaning and I have a functioning dishwasher. Thank you.

Glad it worked out well for you and for so many others too. It's an odd thing to think about but we need to clean the things we use for cleaning as part of maintaining them and increasing the longevity of the appliance.

Fabulous. Took me just 35 minutes start to finish. Our KitchenAid is a different model, but the guts are the same. Wish I could post a debris pic, so I'll just say: broken glass pieces, a matchstick, a push pin, shards of plastic, pistachio shells, a plastic part off who knows what, and some general gunk. Thanks a lot!!

This was exactly the problem and I solved it with your help. Only difference was that the chopper blade had fallen off and it needed to be put back together. I looked that up in another video. I am now putting the dirtiest dishes I can find into the dishwasher and they are all coming out sparkling clean. Thank you, thank you...Rebecca

I have a similar Kitchenaid dishwasher. I couldn't figure out why the dishwasher wasn't filling with much water, dishes on the top rack weren't coming clean, and the soap wasn't dissolving. My husband replaced the soap dish and the water inlet valve (which was gunked up too). After the new water inlet valve was installed, at least it started filling up with water like it should. But the dishes on the top rack were still turning out dirty. I found this video and followed the instructions. I couldn't believe how much junk was built up in the food grinder/drain. I cleaned all that out. I washed out the other parts shown in the video with a garden hose. My dishwasher is working much better now. Thanks!

Thank you for your efforts on this video - you just saved me a lot of headache and aggravation with my Kitchenaid Dishwasher. (The Guts were identical) It would leave the top rack looking like the dishes were washed in gritty sand and pepper yet oddly enough the bottom rack were not too bad at all.

Just wanted to let you know I watched your video and went home and repaired my own dishwasher. Got out the Ryobi drill/screwdriver set and a flashlight, pair of hemostats and went to work. The top rack wasn't spinning/cleaning. Figured there was a clog somewhere. I was able to disassemble my Kenmore, clean it (found 2 toothpicks, pecans, piece of plastic, bone, and the food grater part was mesh and full of cat hair), reassemble it and viola! Working dishwasher. Thank you again for your comprehensive and not overly long video. It saved us 400.00 on a new dishwasher.
