Thank you for this interesting video are infusions or decoctions in water suitable for this formula or just glycerin extracts ?
As long as they are water based or water soluble/miscible they will work in this formula.
Could i use tego solv 61 or symbio solv clear plus instead of the Arlacel 1689??
To help you with this specifically, we would need to get full details of your formula and specifications of specific materials. Thank so much Belinda.....what is the highest hlb value the liquid emulsifier can have?
20 is the maximum in the HLB system, but emulsifiers usually max out at 16 - even at 16 they are more solubilisers than emulsifiers; and above 16 they start to foam too much to be emulsifiers (they are then surfactants). You can learn more with us, check out our Diploma training here: personalcarescience.com.au/CosmeticScience/DiplomaofPersonalCareFormulation-479/
Thank you for the answer. I realize that I made the question a bit open ended and without context, let me rephrase. I'm looking to find a substitution for aracel as it isn't available in my country. However we have a number of other liquid w/o emulsifiers ranging from 3-9. In your experience, what would be the highest hlb value an emulsifier can have to solubilize the extracts in oil?......Or do I stick with the ones in the 8-9 region of not really w/o or o/w?

@@joy5016 based on what I'm seeing she only used the caprylic caprylic as her base so maybe that is why u are getting an opaque finish... or maybe you could lower your water extract to 0.5% instead of the 1% u used...also...grapeseed is normally light...so maybe your castor oil is what did the damage as well ijs...

@@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 Thanks! Have emailed you.
Hi Belinda, I have a query. I’m hoping to create a oil to put on the scalp for the intention of assisting hair growth with 4% Rosemary oil. (As it’s said Rosemary is very beneficial for it)
However, I’ve added to the following carriers:
Jojoba oil - far too oily. Clumps the hair together with a greasy look, making the hair appear sparse.
Grape seed oil - it’s said it’s the least greasiest of any oil.. it turns out a bit better, but same story.
(And I do not put a lot… say for eg, short quiff-style hair… I’ll put about 4 drops on the crown area and massage in…
Any point in time later, if I touch the hair in the area, you can see the high sheen - look on the fingers.
What options do I have?
I was hoping to make it less-viscous/ less-greasy.
What gave me the idea is that I’ve added 4% rosemary oil to these pre-made ‘rosemary scalp oils’ on eBay (god knows what’s really in there) but it dries up leaving no residue.
Maybe there’s a way to create something similar at home?

@@scarlettpena6258 thanks for the reply. I’ve kinda given up.
I may buy some type of leave in scalp conditioner as the base and add the drops… given that I may not be able to heat it up… I’ll just add rhe 4% rosemary and shake it up before use..
that’s my only option now.

What’s the difference between a solubilizer and solvent?
A solubiliser helps you solubilise an immiscible substance in another - for example, solubilise oil in water, or the other way around. A solvent helps dissolve a substance, like salicylic acid in propanediol. Can this extract now be used in oil in water emulsions?
You can use water soluble extracts in oil in water emulsions easily. You don’t need to solubilise them for an o/w emulsion, the continuous phase is water and will handle direct addition. It's not to add plain water. It's to add a water soluble ingredients, such as an extract. It would normally not disperse into oil without staying separate. This way, it incorporates. It's a way to mix a bit of something water-based into an oil without creating a full on emulsion like a lotion.
Can I use a polysorbate 80 as a solubizer??
Not in this formula - you would need it to be mostly water phase for polysorbate 80 to work.
Is there no way to use more than 1% water? And solubilize it in oil?
No - it is like trying to solubilise more than 1% oil in a water product - it wouldn’t be clear or stable. Your only other option is to create a water in oil emulsion like these: Creating water in oil emulsions: ruclips.net/video/AUaXs-77rVw/видео.html
