    Takes me back to good old days in my paati’s house in the village agraharam:). it used to be a simple eco friendly life- esp aadi perrukku by veerachozhan river (which joins the greater Cauvery River).
    Daily cooking too was simple like your cooking. vegetables from Kolla thottam, tholli will go into kazhaneer pannai for our sweet cows, we only ate on banana leaves after neivedyam and after eating leaves will be thrown into large compost in the backyard ground.

    Vangi means brinjal in marathi
    They have a category of curries called Rassa bhaji means slightly moist curry - not quite kootu consistecy but not dry either
    So it is Rassa vaangi!

    We call this peerkangai paruppu which u explained as what ur Patti makes.
    And rasavangi we use only red chillies. And fry coconut till dark red.

    Namaskarams. Nice recipes from you Mami but jeeragam is never added for rasavaangi or arachu vitta sambar (both are almost the same) in Tamil Brahman samayal. Jeeragam is an ingredient of poricha kootu or more kuzhambhu where it is grinded raw and never fried in oil . Jeeragam is fried in oil only for north Indian sabzis. This may be regional.

      Both r different. In tanjore side we grind coconut , fried kadalaparuppu, dhania , red chilly n vendhayam.
      For rasavangi we use kathrikai or senaikizhangu or vazhaikai. And fr grinding we use roasted coconut, kadalaparuppu, redchilly. And we season it with kadugu ,perungayam And uluthamparuppu. If we have ulundhu vathal we add that too.

    Naan kelvi pattadhu - vaangi is kathrikkai. Rasavaangi was traditionally made with kathrikkai, hence the name rasavaangi.

    It’s real meaning is Brinjal is called Vaangi in Marathi, rasa means juicy or liquid or gravy. So rasa vangi.

    Maharashtrians wanted to distinguish between two kinds of poriyal ( bhaaji)
    Dry poriyal and
    slightly Wet poriyal;
    The wet kind is called Rassa chi baaji
    The favourite veg is
    Vaangi( kattharikka)
    Thisxwas probably called rassavangi
    So that could be the reason
    Even today they use the term Rassa baaji

    Hello mami…. Your interpretation is interesting too but this is the story! Rasavangi also originated in the Maratha kitchens of TANJORE. Vangi is the word for kathirikai in Marathi. Rasa means gravy… so rasavangi means kathirikai in gravy!
