    Here's a question that's been bothering me and you're the one I'd trust for a balanced and honest answer. Why not solder pickups by cutting short the pickup wires and just soldering to the wires already soldered to the pots, I mean within the body cavity? Will there be any signal loss, ampere loss, voltage loss even by shrink tubing over the connection? Looking to add some Seymour Duncan Vintage Tele neck and bridge pickups to my 94/95 Fender Tele.
    Super appreciated your soldering tutorial!!!

    • @honkytonkinson9787
      @honkytonkinson9787 Год назад +3

      I’m probably wrong but with my limited understanding of electronics more solder connections result in more resistance, so thinner tone and more noise. Cleaner and fewer solder joints result in the opposite. Think of a solid stream of water coming out a hose, laminar flow, vs having your finger on the end of the hose a bit; or better analogy, one high quality water hose connected well to the faucet, vs multiple cheaper hoses with bad washers: the multiple cheap hoses will leak at their connections and not have as much pressure coming out the end
      That said, as long as the soldering is good, splicing wires instead of wiring direct to components probably doesn’t make much difference unless you’re Eric Johnson. Quick connects are popular now for a reason and they probably suffer from the same problem that splicing wires might cause

There are several brands making copies of Gibson, LTD, Yamaha and Fender guitars, where their budget models start a bit under $100. Are these the ones you also will not purchase? My first good guitar was my 1980 Ibanez Blazer. I bought it from an old Hippie named Doc, in 89 and slapped a Jackson c90 ceramic in it the year those pickups came out. Alto Loma music had a special where if you bought the JC90's you got a C50 ceramic jazz neck pickup. So I just kinda stayed an Ibanez/Jackson guy before Ibanez was really making heavy metal guitars. I always like Jackson's and Charvels and grew up pretty much down the road from them but they were more money for a good one. I like Gibsons and Strats too but, you know, money for a nice guitar, money for a dead show and a sheet of blotter. Anyway that being said I had never even heard of Douglas guitars, that I know of and about a year ago I became good friends with a neighbor down the road who has a Douglas Les Paul Jr. with 3 humbuckers and I fell head over heels in love with it in 5 minutes man. I've played some very nice and very expensive guitars over the years. I roadied for bands like Motorhead, butthole Surfers, N.I.N Bad Brains etc and played some of their stuff sometimes. Played a couple of Joe Walsh's top end guitars which were nice and very few thing compare to a nice Les Paul that has been kept up and taken care of by a loving tech or player man. But even if Douglas guitars were twice as much as they are I think I might still buy one and put top end pots and tuners in it. Just my humble opinion and just putting it out there for other people like me who haven't heard or maybe haven't played one because I can't see anyone and I mean anyone not being pleased with the Douglas LP Jr that I've played. Well that's all man. Your stuff is cool and you help me out all the time. Thanks man, I'm too hip, gotta go baby.🙂

When ever my selector is at either the single coil or to the humbucker that's positions 1 & 3 on the switch I get alot of noise. But when it's in the middle position there is no noise. Can you please give some insight on what you think might be going on. I think that it's something wrong with the switch. I opened up the back and the wiring is a mess. Looks like someones been in here before. Should I just strip it all out and do a complete rewire? Ideas?

    Regarding that talk about reviewing a Kiesel guitar... believe it or not, a customer just dropped off a headless Kiesel Vader, in my shop, with a broken "headstock". The force that pushes charges through a wire is called "Electromotive force". Electromotive force, or EMF, is a force that is developed by the battery or any other source. In an electric guitar, EMF is created by vibrating a string across a pickup's magnetic field. This creates a very weak EMF sufficient to reach an amplifier through a wire, a guitar cable.
    Even a super-efficient guitar cable will not increase the flow of this weak EMF, but an inefficient one may hinder that flow and negatively alter what the amplifier senses. A good cable adds nothing, but it permits whatever is flowing from the guitar to better get through to the amp. However, this is not always audible as many tests have well-demonstrated.
    Knowing this, I still use expensive guitar cables because they make me feel that I'm doing all I can for the sound. whether they really do anything I can hear, or not.
    They're a totem to the sound gods to which I am a humble penitent.
    As far as what guitar I'll buy, and more importantly, keep, it all comes down to character. If it has sonic character that well-interfaces with my particular character, it may be a keeper. If I'm thinking about it while I'm playing it or working at playing it, it goes.
    I like my guitars to essentially disappear within a few moments after I start to play them. It's all about the music I'm making or trying to make, not the instrument upon which I'm making it.
    It's like a carpenter thinking about the structure he is building rather than his hammer.
    I actually enjoy the physical "guitar" as an objet d'art more when I'm holding it and looking at it, or working on it, or when someone else is playing it, rather than when I'm playing it.

    Ouch a lot of sensitivity in the comments regarding harley benton. There's so many businesses copying from the famous brands. Harley Benton gets burned a lot because they are the best at this. Do they exploit their workers in the far east? Maybe. But bare in mind they use the same factories as every other brand that makes guitars there. They are cheaper because they cut out the middle man (guitar shops).

      HB fanboys notoriously bait others into this ‘you just hate that your Gibson cost 10x as much…’ argument. It’s hard to tell if they’re trolling or seriously care THAT MUCH about pushing this ‘plight of the common man’.
      Once they released the Taylor T5 clone announcing it as an exciting new release, was the day I wrote them off. It’s too niche of a guitar to copy then call your own without a clear intention to deceive. If Sweetwater created knockoffs of the brands they sell, we’d destroy them…but we give Thomann a pass.
      Knockoffs belong with a small company like Agile/Rondo Music back in the day who have to create a ghetto online store just to sell.
