I went to 2 River Plate games whilst travelling, one was against Banfield and the other against Boca and I have genuinely experienced nothing like it. Going back in 2 years to do a whole year in Buenos Aires and I’m gonna try get a Season Ticket because it was so good.

We are a lot of people from different places of argentina who traveled hundred or thousand kms to watch river games. In fact, im writting this, the day after the quarterfinal match at airport

I was in Buenos Ares last year about to fall asleep in an apartment I was staying in. At 11pm I heard a Boca fan outside cheering, since the apartment was full of River Plate fans they started booing and calling them names haha. Football in South America is on a whole other level.

90s and the beginning of the 00s the argentine terraces were way more delirious and crazy, times changed, people are different , lots pf tourists in the stadiums and young people who only go to film themselves in the phone. The recibimientos in the argentine football were like anything in the world of football. Check out River - America de cali Final copa libertadores 1996 recibimiento, it got stuck in my head when i saw it the first time and still it does. The greatest recibimiento ever.

Here in Argentina River Plate is the only club who is not allowed to use big flags, flares/sparklers, and fireworks. Is so sad because we are the team with highest attendance in the world (86000+ EVERY MATCH) but they forbid us to do all that others teams do. Even our hooligans/ultras (Los Borrachos del Tablon) are not allowed to enter the stadium.

The Monumental Stadium was the host venue of the 1978 World Cup final. The Bombonera sadly was not used; the Velez Sarsfield stadium was the other stadium in Buenos Aires used. ‘78 was the tournament before Maradona’s first; he was dropped from the squad because the manager didn’t think he was ready for the pressures for such a tournament, as he was only 17 at the time. Argentina’s star player of their side that won that tournament was Mario Kempes
Great video. Seeing these sights make me miss the old British football grounds so much more. The beautiful game in the island lost so much of its unmistakable character and atmosphere in the 90's through the revamping of the premiership and big money coming in. I'd give a leg and kidney just to merely step one foot on the crumbling concrete of say, an old terrace like the pre-90's Stretford End with its uneven steps and various inclines, all making it the unique, one of a kind place that it was. Only these sudamerican grounds keep me going nowadays. By the way I like the old configuration of El Monumental a little better when it was an olympic style stadium with the rickety ass barbed wire fencing engirdling the whole lower tier (loved the wall of banners) but enlarging it as a seatless terrace is actually a good move. It looks really good on the main match camera, just a sea of heads right in your face. I just wish they didn't install luxury boxes on the upper section of the middle tier, somewhat an un-Argentinian thing to do, but oh well. I guess when you have such an masterfully constructed stadium at hand with so much space to use, they were at the liberty to do so. In any case, it hasn't lost any of its spirit and classic looks. It still really is the unchallenged king of all football stadiums. May it reign forever.
Amazing video.... You can almost feel fan´s breath all along the match. Full stadiums can be seen all over the world, but Argentinian ones, specially during Libertadores continental cup, with almost all people inside cheering a single team is definitively awesome. Thanks a lot.

About some things: the giant screen was being replaced (renewed) this very week, the CONMEBOL (like your UEFA) Forbade the use of smoke, fireworks or banners quoting the Malvinas Island. That is why fireworks were outside and there were no smoke flares inside. Some rules that once you see the coverage along South America are not applied everywhere (Brazil for example).

Here in Argentina River Plate is the only club who is not allowed to use big flags, flares/sparklers, and fireworks. Is so sad because we are the team with highest attendance in the world (86000+ EVERY MATCH) but they forbid us to do all that others teams do. Even our hooligans/ultras (Los Borrachos del Tablon) are not allowed to enter the stadium.

The Monumental Stadium was the host venue of the 1978 World Cup final. The Bombonera sadly was not used; the Velez Sarsfield stadium was the other stadium in Buenos Aires used. ‘78 was the tournament before Maradona’s first; he was dropped from the squad because the manager didn’t think he was ready for the pressures for such a tournament, as he was only 17 at the time. Argentina’s star player of their side that won that tournament was Mario Kempes

Great video. Seeing these sights make me miss the old British football grounds so much more. The beautiful game in the island lost so much of its unmistakable character and atmosphere in the 90's through the revamping of the premiership and big money coming in. I'd give a leg and kidney just to merely step one foot on the crumbling concrete of say, an old terrace like the pre-90's Stretford End with its uneven steps and various inclines, all making it the unique, one of a kind place that it was. Only these sudamerican grounds keep me going nowadays. By the way I like the old configuration of El Monumental a little better when it was an olympic style stadium with the rickety ass barbed wire fencing engirdling the whole lower tier (loved the wall of banners) but enlarging it as a seatless terrace is actually a good move. It looks really good on the main match camera, just a sea of heads right in your face. I just wish they didn't install luxury boxes on the upper section of the middle tier, somewhat an un-Argentinian thing to do, but oh well. I guess when you have such an masterfully constructed stadium at hand with so much space to use, they were at the liberty to do so. In any case, it hasn't lost any of its spirit and classic looks. It still really is the unchallenged king of all football stadiums. May it reign forever.

About some things: the giant screen was being replaced (renewed) this very week, the CONMEBOL (like your UEFA) Forbade the use of smoke, fireworks or banners quoting the Malvinas Island. That is why fireworks were outside and there were no smoke flares inside. Some rules that once you see the coverage along South America are not applied everywhere (Brazil for example).
In Brazil smoke and fireworks are not allowed too.
