Knowing Where to Invest Your Energy

  • The Kan Kan films have come about as I have met my niece for the first time. She's epic and reminds me of a younger me (yes I did insinuate that I'm epic!) I'm self-indulgently dishing out my middle-aged lady advice.
The art of not giving a 'fuck' is essentially about being selective about where your fucks are given. This doesn't mean becoming indifferent or insensitive but rather choosing to direct your fucks towards things that truly enhance your life and align with your values. For example, if you value family time, prioritize that over overtime hours that don't significantly benefit your career or well-being.
Once you have a clearer picture of what's important, it's time to assess where you're unnecessarily expending energy. We often waste our emotional and mental resources on things that, in the grand scheme, hold little significance in our personal and professional growth. Are you worrying about pleasing everyone? Are you overthinking about keeping up appearances on social media? These are areas where you might want to consider caring less.
To help with this, adopt the simple rule: if something won't matter in five years, don't spend more than five minutes being upset by it. This perspective can help you avoid getting bogged down by minor irritations and focus more on actions that have a meaningful impact on your life.
Finally, set boundaries. Boundaries are essential for protecting your energy and keeping you focused on what matters. They aren't about shutting people out but clearly communicating what you will and will not devote your time and energy to. This clarity will help others understand your values and will deter unnecessary drama from your life.

"Absolutely, focusing on what truly enriches our lives and aligns with our values is key. I agree that we often spend too much energy on things that don't contribute much to our overall well-being. It's liberating to embrace the art of not giving a 'fuck' about trivial matters and instead investing our time and energy into what brings us joy and fulfillment. Thanks for sharing such valuable wisdom!"
