Just found your video today 3 years later but still relevant. want to learn how to properly taste wine instead of just drinking whatever is available and not understanding the makeup of the wine. This video definitely helped and I am now a follower.
Thanks so much for watching! I always look at my videos as a story to be told, How do you tell it as quickly and concisely as possible while making it fun and interesting. I appreciate the feedback!
Merlot is undisputedly on my top ten favourites list. I envisage myself enjoying a glass--or rather, make it a bottle--while dining al fresco and eating a delicious meaty tomato pasta. That would be heaven. On a side note, I admire where you do your filming, Marc, especially in the summer months. Somehow, with all the greenery in the background, I imagine a lush and sweeping vineyard being only steps away from where you are seated. I stumbled upon your blog (if I'm using the right term) during the wee hours of this morning. I watched one and being captivated, insatiably continued to watch more. I'm not sure if you have covered Beaujolais in any of your red wine sessions, but if you haven't please consider this wine as another topic for your viewers. Thanks again, Marc. Darryl
I just bought a bottle of Red Diamond Merlot $8. I could taste the plum, black berries, grapes. From Washington State, I live in Oregon, cwe have some of the world's best wineries in Oregon.
Hey Mark, great video. I have started watching your channel and have subsequently subscribed to your channel. I think you have a Lotta great information for people that are just getting started in those that I’ve been tasting reds for quite some time. I do enjoy Cabs and so on. But as far as the Merlot’s, I have not had one for a while, but I think it’s time to get back to them. That was one of the very first red wines that I started with many years ago. Thanks for the information in this one. I enjoy the way you break it down in and simple and easy ways for everybody to understand. Cheers!
Hey Mike, thanks so much for the kind words. It's been a while since I added a new video here but this is the year I get back to it. I get so much kind, and thoughtful feedback from my viewers. Let me know if there are any topics you're interested in and I'll see about making a video for it. Cheers, Marc
They're on the cheaper side ...and I mean really cheap..but Tisdale California and Beringer Main & Vine are pretty good. I especially like the Tisdale. It has a nice smooth, velvety texture and a really good lingering after taste. It's a semi dry but just the right balance. The Beringer is more dry and more of an earthy kinda thing. I'll have to try the Ste Michelle.
I never really liked Merlot until I tried one from Bordeaux. I went to a wine tasting class recently, and we tried a wine that was 100% Merlot from the right bank. I liked it a lot better than the Merlots that I had from other countries.
Thanks for watching, Joyce! Merlot can be quite high in alcohol, around 14% or higher. You might want to start looking at the labels for the alcohol level, see if you can find one with lower ABV.
Awesome video Marc!! Love how genuine and clear you are in your communication. I always thought it was so funny when watching Sideways that he hates Merlot but the wine bottle he covets and has been waiting to drink is '61 Cheval Blanc that is Merlot and Cab Franc. Too funny. I was lucky enough to drink lots of Petrus during my years at Christie's wine auctions and it is pretty delicious... I hope you might do more videos soon, as these are great!
Thank you for watching! I'm sure, in time, as younger generations come around to drinking wine, that Merlot will again finds its place among the top wines. When you have wines like Petrus and Cheval Blanc, it's hard to argue that Merlot isn't great. Cheers!

Hi, I have tried a red wine once but it was really bitter. Someone told me to try Moscoto and I love it but certain Moscoto(d 'asti). Anyways i realize the only way i can do wine is it has to be a sweet desert. Can you recommend a sweet red desert wine?
Hi Sarah, sure. There are quite a few sweet reds out there, although I'm not sure where you live and what's available to you. Italy makes one called Recioto di Valpolicalla, made from grapes that are dried on straw mats to concentrate the sugars. There's a sweet bubbly wine from Italy called Brachetto, which is a fun wine to drink with chocolate dishes. Ruby Port from Portugal is sweet, and has extra alcohol added (20%) so it's got quite a kick. Lastly, if you like California wine, I think brands like Barefoot and Apothic both make a sweet red now. I think the Apothic is called Velvet. Hope this helps, and thanks for contacting me!
@@wine-living actually I live in San Diego. Theres no shortage of any kind of alcohol around here lol. The Moscoto I enjoyed by the way was by Stella Rosa. I 'll check those ones out though thanks!!

Marc, I opened a 2016 Merlot from Maryhill (Washington) the other day. It was kinda “thin” but tasted bigger the second day. Does this ever happen to you?

Exposing it to some oxygen will allow it to breathe and start developing its aromas and flavors again. Some experts even recommend serving red wine up to a day after opening.
Thanks for shared information on red wines. I would love to find a well-balanced wine. . . one that's not too dry or overwhelmingly sweet. . . Any suggestions? Celeste, in the ATL 💐

Stella Rosa wines are mostly low-priced sweet wines made in Italy. As far as I know, they're made with fruits and some with the Moscato grape, but no Merlot.
Oh, so that Sideways movie did to Merlot the exact opposite of what Lost in Translation did to Japanese Whisky. After that movie, demand jumped for Japanese whisky by several hundred percent. The demand got so high that some brands literally began to run out of aged product, and rather than lowering the quality, they just stopped selling it.
@@sharadsharma4833 Ya, the problem with the whisk(e)y business is that product takes years to produce so you need to estimate what your demand 10+ years in the future will be. Japanese whisky demand grew so quickly that no one was actually able to keep up with it. They are in the process of making more, so it will be back on shelves in the future. It is just it will take some time. Every year they have a certain amount of product maturing. It just isn't enough to meet the entire year's demand.
@@sharadsharma4833 I think Yamazaki is a different story... They won a Scotch Whisky blind tasting a few years ago and actually beat the Scots, which made Yamazaki very desirable.

Is White Merlot good for a first time drinker? I’m a heavy set woman, I’m 200+ pounds and about 5’5 ish? I’m looking forward to at least experience getting drunk or buzzed the right way Please answer ! Thank you
Hi xoxo, you can start with whatever you want. My videos are just suggestions. But if you prefer sweet wines, White Merlot would be a good place to start. Or maybe a sweet Riesling from Washington or Germany. I don't know enough about your personal tastes to make a recommendation, and that's really what it's about.
My girlfriend is looking for a red wine as something to take daily because she has heart problems. She is 26 and has never been drunk before due to coming from a line of people that abused alcohol. She has never had wine let alone anything else so i could really use some help. I was thinking Carlo Rossi only because when my band played parties i would walk around drinking a handle of it.
I don't know how easy it is to get wine where you live, but if she has heart problems, you want a wine that's got a lot of antioxidants in it, which come from the red grape skins. The red grape with the highest antioxidants (resveratrol) is Pinot noir!!
I have found some good wine 🍷 in the $10-13 dollar price range and I have not been able to tell the difference whatsoever when trying $15-20 price points for red wine 🍷. I think it’s probably just me.
Seriously? Remember when Miles and Jack were about to meet with Stephanie and Maya for dinner? Jack takes Miles aside before entering the restaurant. Warns him about not getting "too drunk". Then Miles screams, "If they want to drink Merlot,...I am NOT going to drink Merlot...". That was enough discourage me from Merlot for awhile. Later, whenever I pick up a bottle of Coppola Merlot from Costco...I always hear Miles screaming in my head.
The point being made in Sideways was TOTALLY missed by everyone. The bottle the character has to celebrate his wedding anniversary with his wife was her favorite, Merlot. So when they broke up- it was too painful for him to drink.
We have best air cushion packing for wine during shipment, with protection environment materials,no pollution and can be recycle ♻️,save cost, space, man power, shipping fee.welcome inquiry!
I do! More often when it comes to white wines. I think they do a bit better with whites like Riesling and Chard, Pinto blanc and Gewurz. If you check out my Commercial videos playlist, at the bottom of my channel, I work with a few FLX producers like Fox Run and Sheldrake Point.
Well, it'a really a matter of opinion! Whatever you like - is the best, for you. But overall, I think many professionals agree that France, Spain, Italy, Germany, produce some of the best wines in the world. But again, it's more a consensus than an actual fact. Cheers and thanks for watching.
Ok. You can get a mid-priced Pinot noir for around $10-15 that will be good and also have those antioxidants in it. Look for Kendall-Jackson, Chateau St. Michele and Bogle as a few good examples. Good luck!

Emily A cheap merlot? I go to my nearest save-a-lot for that. I get a big bottle for $4 and I'm set for the day
I remember that movie. No idea it would affect wine sales. Interesting.
Thanks for watching!! Some people in the industry speculate it is STILL affecting sales!!
You will probably be happy that I have planted multiple merlot vines :)
I really like Merlot and it does well in my area so I decided to plant some.
I love BOONES FARM lol

Eleanor Dyer thank you for watching! are you a wine lover?
Yes!
Eleanor Dyer let me know if there is any particular wine you'd be interested in learning more about!
Fab! I need to share this with my Pa, he should learn more about red wine! ;)
Please do and thanks for watching!
The point being made in Sideways was TOTALLY missed by everyone. The bottle the character has to celebrate his wedding anniversary with his wife was her favorite, Merlot. So when they broke up- it was too painful for him to drink.

Hey these videos are cool as! me and my friend are doing a wine tasting show aswell and would love you to have a look!
make a video on how it's made... 👋
Closely guarded secret. Nobody knows. I think they use unicorn tears.
Why don't you ever mention the Finger Lakes and Niagara regions of New York?
I do! More often when it comes to white wines. I think they do a bit better with whites like Riesling and Chard, Pinto blanc and Gewurz. If you check out my Commercial videos playlist, at the bottom of my channel, I work with a few FLX producers like Fox Run and Sheldrake Point.
Could you send one of them to me...? I already have a glass for it..lol🤣🤣🤣
I remember my first drink. It was a Merlot and it was SO bitter. I never tried wine again. I hate wasting alcohol.
I don't drink at all.. Will this burn my throat? Lol
No. It won't burn your throat. It might actually chill your soul. Lol
Is the best red wine really from France, what do u think about that?
Well, it'a really a matter of opinion! Whatever you like - is the best, for you. But overall, I think many professionals agree that France, Spain, Italy, Germany, produce some of the best wines in the world. But again, it's more a consensus than an actual fact. Cheers and thanks for watching.
This one is from _IZ RYE AHL_
In price Rioja is my 🍷
AWESOME
Thank you!! Cheers.
i’m making a wine too.
Awesome! That's how I got my start.
I'm in PA still xD
Ok. You can get a mid-priced Pinot noir for around $10-15 that will be good and also have those antioxidants in it. Look for Kendall-Jackson, Chateau St. Michele and Bogle as a few good examples. Good luck!
Merlot is great with meat stews.
Minuman surga love elove
If Sideways killed Merlot, it lifted up Pinot Noir which is generally only slightly better than drinking a glass of 1/2 diluted piss.
People are so gullible first off sideways is a dope movie second of all eye love Merlot wine!!
