Larry Short on Art Linkletter TV show - 1963

- When I was 5 I was filmed (unbeknownst to me at the time) in a pet store in Santa Monica, California, for a segment of Art Linkletter's early show, "Life With Linkletter." My brother (Don Short, 3 at the time) also appears in the background of the beginning part of the video.
Several months after this initial taping, I appeared on the show with Art Linkletter, Sebastian Cabot, Jane Meadows, and Carl Reiner.
Don and I are both employed now by World Vision, and this video was featured at Art Linkletter's 85th birthday bash in Beverley Hills, where I had the privilege of presenting a gift to Art on behalf of the 35,000 children who had appeared on his shows over the years, and on behalf of World Vision, with whom Art has partnered many times to bring help and hope to children suffering from natural and manmade disasters worldwide.
The gala was sponsored by the French Alzheimer's Foundation, and coordinated by Art's daughter, Sharon.
My memories of Art are of a truly kind man who loved children from the depths of his heart, and had an uncanny knack for communicating at our level. I hope this video honors his memory, which will live forever in our hearts!
Please air these shows again. Today's world needs them.
Such a cutie, children are precious
I remember watching , the ART LINKLETTER SHOW , when I was a kid and at 52 years old today , I still crack up at , what life was really like in the good days. God bless you ART !!
How great thy ART 🎶 fr fr 🎶
Great memory for you, Larry. I really liked Art Linkletter, he always showed respect for the kids and I (a kid myself) understood that.
That was so precious. Art Linkletter was a darling SWEET man.
I love this. Kids were so innocent back then, which I think is refreshing. I would have been the same age as Larry at the time, and I have nothing but fond memories of my childhood. Kids were more respectful of adults, and adults gave kids guidance. Thanks for sharing, Larry!
Kids are still innocent today
Well said
That was so adorable. Cute little boy and I loved Art and the wsy he was so kind and sweet to him. Oh the good old days.
They are not old days. They just went missing for a while.
This is great, Larry. Even back then you were a "man" of your word. Thanks for sharing.
That is not Larry from the show - it’s A different Larry .
Thanks for putting up the video regardless.
@@MMm-le7jj - actually, Larry Short has made many replies to the comments here. What he has said leads us to believe that he is, in fact, THE Larry Short in the Art Linkletter TV show clip. Read some of the Larry Short responses, and then see for yourself whether you still think this is a different Larry or the one in the TV show.
@@jillcampbell8019 and @M Mm ... I am indeed the same Larry! Thanks for checking though.
@@jillcampbell8019 - Jill is correct. I'm that Larry. 🙂
Larry, I am so glad that you kept that movie so you could post it on You Tube after all these years. I was born in 1956, and although I never got to be on Art's show, I remember watching and enjoyinging it. May God bless you for all the work you did [and are still doing?] around the world for World Vision!
Thank you, Kevin, you are so kind!
Yes I remember them also kids say the darnedest things my mom won a G E refrigerator on his show

I miss his program so much and I miss art Linkletter, one of a kind it might be copies, but one of a kind is Art Linkletter and now he’s in heaven making other people laugh
You were adorable, Larry.... and very honorable. I'm sure you still are.
Discussions with children but I never saw that one and I enjoyed it immensely
Wow! Sebastian Cabot & Carl Reiner. Jane Meadows looks and sounds so much like her sister.
Sebastian's joke about the Elephant and the rose really caught me off guard. It made me laugh.
As others have noted... such a simpler and more innocent time. I was a child of the 60s and 70s. I think the greatest time to be a kid in America. It's heart breaking to see what's happened to this country.
So much innocence back then no I phones and internet to corrupt them and nothing about being racist but they didnt show black kids or Hispanic kids that I remember
@@davidreed6264 In fairness, I believe the population of black & hispanic people--and therefore, available kids---was quite lower in the US than it is now. Of course that doesn't mean racism didn't exist then. I may be mis-remembering, but as the Linkletter-kids shows evolved in later years I think there were some minority kids.
what a charming show! Very cute.
Delightful young man!
Most enjoyable. You did the right thing, Larry.
John, thanks for sharing this during our "luncheon" today! That was very special. And it also prompted me to go back and look at these comments (which I don't think I've ever done before), which are all very encouraging! I do miss Art Linkletter, he was quite a guy, kind and generous and respectful towards kids as human beings to be cherished and protected.
You are a very fine boy, Larrence. I love the way that the man pushed you back in camera range.
LOL! I guess that's part of what happens on live television. I'm really glad now I didn't pick my nose.
Good for you Larry! You were - and likely still are - a rock!👍👍
Larry was a very honorable little boy & kept the egg warm for as long as he could. I hope the egg hatched & something nice came out of it.
I've always wondered about that! I hope so too.
Wow! Truly a good kid! And cute.
I really enjoyed this!
This is wonderful!!!
I can't help but imagine what this would be like today. The first guy would be arrested for soliciting an under age child... the second guy would be arrested for touching you.....and you'd be taken away and placed into foster care for being left alone in a pet store!
Funny and sad at the same time.
I'm of your generation and we lived in much safer and less paranoid times for sure.
Thanks for sharing this!
I agree. I have the same thoughts each time I watch this. The world has changed indeed, in some ways for the better, in others not.
And don't forget Carl Riener suggesting that Sebastian Cabots' hobby is eating sandwiches. Insensitivity to the obese!!!!! Oh, the horrors!!! Of course Mr Cabot takes it all in stride & laughs, as opposed to going through life looking for things to be offended by.
@@bemore1134 - Yes indeed, Mr. Cabot impressed me as a very kind and humble soul!
God bless you, LARRY ♥♥♥♥
Larry...this was precious....loved it! Your parents ROCKED!
Soo sweet. I loved this show. I was a kid myself. There should be a remake
Bill Cosby had a remake some years ago.
Childhood the true miracle.
Too bad they don't have television shows like this anymore...
It wouldn't be the same (Or even close to the original!) Things have changed far too much. Most young children are exposed to so many things at too young an age and have lost the innocent spontaneity children should have as a result. Between social media , television, and modern adults, most children have few, if any, manners, or respect for adults, are either tongue-tied or rude and flippant (since this is considered "cute and sassy" today and is encouraged), and probably couldn't be bothered to put down whatever electrical gadget in their hands to answer a question, let alone have a conversation! On tv, movies, and real life, children today are almost always shown being rude, flippant, obnoxious, and even foulmouthed, all the while being applauded and praised by the adults filming them! I'll just keep finding the good old quality shows from days past...I know I wouldn't enjoy a show like this with most of today's children!!
@@cynthiaesquibel3191 Witch go's with what old man Green was to say too me many years ago. The only thing that makes him feel so bad about being as old as he is because he's had a life is all the great technology there coming out with he knew they would someday.
But how crazy this world is going to become when I become his age. And he was 85 at the time. And he was 89 when he passed in the early 90's. And he was right.
Ah,he was the first to realize kids are hysterical and soooo honest. 😅
My mom adored Art Linkletter, but now that I’m much older, I like him too
Madam Butterfly Yes!
LOL! I think his humor is good for kids of all ages.
That was great! brought back some great memories. Thanks
I was age 3 during this ep! I watched the ones made during 1965 and after.
So funny, kids are great❤
thank you for sharing Larry, I enjoyed going down memory lane.
I love this
very sweet. This was posted so long ago, but thanks for sharing.
Sabatian Cabot - he was on a series as the butler/house manager for many years with Eddie Albert :)
Family Affair....I loved that show when I was a kid. Buffy and Jody
It was called Family Affair and it was with Brian Keith
Cabot was magnificent in Family Affair.
Good boy! Good job!
Wow, what a precious memory. I am about your age, oh my, where did the time go?
My sentiments exactly!!!

Melody Jordan Agreed!
What to good old days
Yes... 🎉🎉🎉
Nowadays he would be considered kinda creepy but I liked him!!
That's great! Although it does occur to me that you should have been rewarded for correct guesses rather than incorrect ones. I hope you got plenty of mileage out of that film projector!
Ha, I've thought that many times! I think the producers' goal was probably to fool the celebrities, hence the reward for wrong guesses. But it didn't make a whole lot of sense in this case.
Sadly, the show didn't last past its first season in 1963. But subsequent shows (like "Life With Linkletter") I think were much better. It was just a huge blessing for me to meet Art (and Sebastian, Jane and Carl) and to have the whole experience. My parents did sell the projector when they were tight on cash, but I still have the 16mm reel. I also cashed in the $50 war bond that Art gave me and used the resulting $350 as part of my first tuition payment at college!
These are great thanks😂
oh to go back when things were clean and innocent...
CUTEST CLIP...LOVE IT!
This could NEVER happen in today's world .. my goodness
No kidding! An authority figure asked him to do something, and he refused?! At age six?! And he used his memory about something happening more than 4 seconds ago?! I'd love to see what happens now-a-days.
Carl Reiner is still alive at age 96 now.

Thank you for the kind comment! I'm 65 now. Yes, I have led a blessed life in many ways, and this was one of those early experiences you never forget! Art was so kind and gentle, I think in many ways he had a huge impact on my life.
@@LarryShort well hello Lawrence Short. What a surprise to see you pop up in the comment section. I sure enjoyed watching you on that show. Best wishes to you and yours.
There were two editions of "LIFE WITH LINKLETTER", 'drink'- a prime-time edition on ABC from 1950 through '52, and an NBC daytime version in 1970.
Back when kids were kids and not having em.
Actually, this was from Art's prime-time NBC game show, "THE ART LINKLETTER SHOW", on Mondays at 9:30pm(et) during the first half of 1963 [from the same producer of his "PEOPLE ARE FUNNY" series, John Guedel], which featured "hidden camera" situations, in which Art's panelists (in this edition, Carl Reiner, Jayne Meadows [Mrs. Steve Allen] and Sebastian Cabot) had to guess the outcome.
I always thought this might have been a precursor to "Candid Camera," it seemed so similar, but was told today the idea for the latter actually predates 1963.
Spot on! Too bad The Art Linkletter Show only lasted one season.
so cool
"I'm single". 😂
I liked "Kids say the darndest things"....
That kids almost 70!
And everyone in the audience is probably dead. Perspective
You're close ... I'm 65, but will take the five years! And you're correct, most of the adults there are probably no longer with us. Something to think about. Life is short.
HAHAHAHA! Carl Reiner even said his own children aren’t as honorable as Larry! 🤣 we’re looking at you, Rob Reiner! 🤡
I’m too tired just now😮
Larry, what happened to the Bell and Hower Movie Projector you received from Art? Was it eventually donated to World Vision, to be used in remote ares where they did not have TVs and VCRs, but still used movie projectors and white walls as projection screens? I am glad to hear that you put the $50 war bond to such good use, using it for paying tuition at Biola College, such a wonderful Christian School.
Kevin, a few years after the show I think my parents got in a tight spot financially and had to sell the projector. I'm not even sure I was aware of this until later. But they were always so generous with me it didn't matter. And they ended up being generous child sponsors with World Vision, as well. So all is good!
Those $50 war bonds were left over from ww2, which ended just 18 years earlier.
where have all the great ones gone?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The weirdest thing is that I met someone named Larry Short up in Washington state who would have been the same age as this kid, only it was in 1978. Common name, I'm sure, but the same age. Weird.
a $50 war bond for a wrong answer from the panel!!!! I wonder what that cost!
Have a friend who appeared on the show with her son back in 1966 timeline. Is there any archive when one can find these videos? Her husband was on too and he's passed on. I think she'd be thrilled to have video of this appearance with their 9 month old son. It was an episode where there were three babies the same age dressed alike and she was to identify which was hers.
This particular show, The Art Linkletter Show, only lasted a year (1963). Your friend and her son were probably on "House Party," which Linkletter hosted until 1967. There are some episodes of "House Party" hosted on RUclips, which you can find here: ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=House+Party+Art+Linkletter
Aside from that, I'm not sure how you would locate a copy.
"$50 war bond", that's great
Turned into about $350 by the time I got to college and needed tuition $$!
@fromthesidelines Don't you think that the guy who actually posted this video and was actually there would know the show he was on? My bet is that he's right.
Yes, thanks, I've doublechecked, it was The Art Linkletter Show which only aired in 1963.
It's more like candid camera I want the art link letter show kids say the darndest things
Larry, do you remember anything, even vaguely, of these experiences, either in the pet shop or the time on stage with Mr. Linkletter?
Yes, I have very clear memories of these unique experiences!
@@LarryShort I wrote my question ten years ago :) Glad we're both still alive lol Thanks for responding.
@@TryTheBLT - Yes, me too! (Sorry, I just recently discovered all these comments. Figured I'd try and answer them all at once!)
@fromthesidelines So Art got that slot when THE PRICE IS RIGHT moved to Friday (replacing DON'T CALL ME CHARLIE).
If Larry's still alive, I wonder if he has this footage yet!
Hi Donna! Yes, I'm still here, in good health, happily married and retired. (And yes, I still have the original footage!) Actually, it's very original in that, during a conversation with Art's daughter Sharon (about 1998 I think) I discovered there had been a fire in the vault which contained the original reels for this show, and they were destroyed. She was very happy to discover I still owned one, and I happily shared it with NBC to make a copy of. They did so and returned it.
As a result of that meeting, as a 41-year-old I also was invited to be a special guest at a fundraising dinner in Burbank for the foundation Art chaired for many years, the John Douglas French Alzheimer's Foundation. I believe the occasion was Art's 85th birthday, and I publicly represented the 35,000 children who had appeared on his shows. They showed this video during that dinner, and I was also privileged to present him with greetings on behalf of my employer, World Vision, for his steadfast lifesaving work for millions of children impacted by the great famine in Ethiopia in 1985.
@@LarryShort How cool is all of that?? Once in a life time opportunity. Great, I didn't realize that about Art Linkletter! He seemed like the best guy! It was good of you to do that & am sure they appreciated it. I would've been mortified at that age to walk out there myself in front of cameras with all adults like that, ha! Good job! Interesting stuff, thanks for the reply. Oh & I didn't mean to be morbid saying that about your being alive yet except it Was a few moons ago. ☺

The 16mm film I received contained the entire half-hour show. This is just my segment which I had digitized and put on RUclips. I still have the reel with the other two segments.
I was on the show in 1965 or 1966. I wonder if there are archives?

Jayne Meadows was hot as hell!
Wow! Larry, I wonder if you still have that film reel Art gave you to show your classmates?
Yup, sure do. In the 90s I had it converted to video, then later converted that to digital. (I wonder what's next? I suppose soon I'll have to get it converted to Meta or some such.)
how much was 50 dollars compared to today.
Google says $50 in 1963 had the purchasing power of $472.40 today. However, I'm not sure that's taking recent inflation into account.
I cashed it in in Sept. 1975 (when I started college) and if memory serves I got about $350 for it then.
those kinda kids do not exist anymore
Really? You did the honorable thing and you only got a $50 bond instead of the $200. You would've gotten the camera either way. I'm sure that was a lesson you learned to carry on in life. Hope the $50 bond allowed you to retire early in life. Just kidding. Loved the video. Thanks for sharing.
It was a great experience either way! And the $50 bond eventually became more than $300 and helped me get started at college.
