An underrated part of Dirk's game in his prime was his speed and how agile he was. Yes young people who never got to see prime Dirk, he was fast. Very fast. You can see it in this video, he was very good at driving past opponents and finishing at the rim. Defenders tried to crowd him when he had the ball to neutralize his jump shot, but he was so quick that he could drive right by them. He was about as perfect of an offensive player that you could get.
About as perfect an offensive scorer yes, player not so much as Bird and other legends still had a better ability to make their teammates better with better playmaking and passing. Dirk was a 7ft shooting guard but Bird was like a 6'10 combo guard like Steph and Luka with an elite ability to pass. Another hindrance to him being a top 5 player of all time, is tho he was 7ft he wasn't the best rim protector or perimeter defender. Tho he had moments in his career where he locked in and played the best he could, really athletically he just didn't have that energy and jumping ability others had. Bird didn't have the best athleticism either but he still brought a lot more grit and grind to his game than Dirk did.

Everyone will look back and realize Dirk's impact one day. To be 7ft tall with guard skills at THAT time?!? We were looking into the future every time we saw Nowitzki perform a virtuoso. This is what they meant by poetry in motion
He revolutionized the power forward position. I remember growing up watching him and being completely perplexed that people hated on him so much. I understood back then that we were watching the future of basketball. There will never be another Dirk Nowitzki. He is the true Unicorn of the power forward position.
One of the best or the best shooting big man in the NBA. Teams back then especially this year got matchup problems with Dirk, totally unguardable with how he shoots that ball. My goodness! Feels like this was just yesterday, how I wish Dirk's prime was in line with Luka's prime too. Great vid man, keep it up!
@@p.v.e0581 First of all, no it wasn't. He continued his dribble, he just hesitated with his body. Secondly, even if it was a travel (which it wasn't), one play doesn't negate Dirk's handles being underrated.
Most underrated scorer of all time. People thought he spammed one-legged-fades from the corner with the occasional three all the time and that’s it. He was so much more than that
Growing up, this dude amazed me. Best shooting big (at a time when bigs rarely shot 3s) ever, and he could put the ball on the floor and get to the basket with ease. This was a fun season but a heartbreaking finals.
@@rapsack7058 I remember watching a preseason game the Thunder vs the Mavs and watch KD hit a 1 foot fade away and when he starts to turn back down he finds Dirk and stares at him. After the game he said he was paying homage. Kobe also did the exact we thing.
Wrong comparison. Dirk had handles, he had played small forward in his first season. Dirk couldn't use them much after he put on weight in 2004. KD was a lot more athletic than Dirk and can jump higher. KD plays like Dirk only in term of with those mid-range pull-ups and trail 3s. They are both match-up nightmare for their skill relative to their size. That's why Dirk was one of KD's draft comparison. But KD isn't going to play like prime Dirk because he doesn't have those post moves, like spinning left and right, roll in and those lefty lay-ups. KD is not a post player. He is a small-ball power forward, not an actual power forward (e.g. Luis Scola, LaMarcus Aldridge). I mean KD went out of his way to lie about his height just to not play the 4 and avoid learning all these post move.
@@csy9366 @Jamal Burch Both KD and DIrk found there own way to play post. Dirk wasnt playing post like the "normal classic Pf" who pushed others out of the way. Dirk did it with and only with smart footwork. But dont compare later Dirk with KD. Look more for Dirk at 2006. And theres Dirk more compareable to KD. Dont underestimate dirks athletic abilitys. Its just he didnt rely on it like most others. He used skill and body control over raw athletics. I think Holger teached Dirk that way to have a more healthy play style. And it worked ;) Back to the point, KD learned from Dirk and he found its own way to play. Its like Judo..There are the basics and every body learns them and all look alike. But later you change the style for competions. You change the style to use best what your own body gives you... In that way KD looked at Dirk and used Dirks skills and moves as basics for him self. And then he learned to do it on his own way with his own style.... I hope that makes sense for you...
The 06 finals was the hardest for me to ever watch. Probably always will be. I grew up a Lakers fan. Dirk was my 2nd favorite player behind Kobe. I modeled my game after him. I was a big Wade fan too. Dallas went up 2-0 and wade snapped 4 games in a row. Great series. Just tough to see someone had to lose lol
Imagine his scoring if today’s step back tomfoolery was legal his entire career? His fade already unguardable , add a step back to his arsenal that man would never know a bad look.
Dirk is so underrated. You could pencil the Mavs in for 50 wins no matter who they put around him during his prime (eleven years in a row!! For comparison, when Shaq left the Lakers, they dipped below 50 wins 3 straight years while Kobe was still there). His gravity when he was on the floor was enormous -- and he would pull the other team's big away from the lane, opening up the floor for everyone else. His impact goes way way behind his raw numbers (which of course are incredible in and of themselves). As a longtime Mavs fan, I remember this era well. In addition to my memories of him playing, two other things pop in my mind: 1) he was incredibly clutch--just money in big moments, and 2) the average NBA fan had no idea how good he was. Most people thought he was just "another soft European" player. We Mavs fans know better--at least those of us who've been around for a minute haha
In head-to-head matchups all-time, Nowitzki holds a 23-17 winning record over Garnett, including a 3-0 sweep in the first round of the 2002 Western Conference Playoffs. Battling in the regular season is one thing, but that playoff series between Nowitzki and Garnett simply doesn't get talked about enough these days.
Tbh if dirk was playing with Lakers or Celtics im pretty sure he will get all the recognitions that he deserve. People just remember dirk on that 2011 championship till retirement. Thats why people and media was not giving him praises and credits when he was in his prime.
Nowitzki is the best offensive PF in the history of basketball. But his choice to retire at age 40-41 was not so good. He had to retire in 2013 at age 35.
This hurts because he got robbed of his first ring. And in 07 if the Mavs would've played anyone else but the warriors they would've won that title as well. Even when dirk scored 50 against gsw that year the Mavs lost. Dirk is so underrated
Greatest offensive power forward to ever play. People don't realize how efficient Dirk was throughout his career. In his prime he was alot more athletic than people like to give him credit for. His jump shot was poetry in motion.
I've been waiting awhile for dirk's reel, great video! Here are a few suggestions: 2007 Tony Parker, 93 Michael Jordan, 95 Hakeem Olajuwon and MVP Karl Malone!
Dirk maybe the best faceup player of all time. Everytime he’s faces up at the top of the key, top of the circle, elbow or midpost it’s an automatic. He faceup & shoot over you with ease wit no dribbles most of the time or 1-3 dribbles at most
I think so. Maybe only KD is on his level, but Dirk’s stroke is so much nicer. Nearly everything he drained was a splash that didn’t touch rim. Absolutely one of the greatest shooters that ever lived.
His #s don’t reflect his game. When I watch the highlights .I feel like he should’ve average more points like 33 PPG or something. Is it cause he didn’t shoot a lot of 3s or something. So unstoppable, he shoot over wit ease & score at will with no wasted movement & that spin move layup or fadaway was just an elite counter
this was such a good season, this was right when they made that rule change and everyone went crazy. nash, lebron, kobe, dirk and wade all had big cases for mvp, probably the only year other than 1990 where multiple players had legit cases for mvp
Imagine luka being a 6 yr old kid in Slovenia seeing highlights like this on TV and turning to his mom like "Mom, when I get older I'm gonna be like Dirk Nowitzki." 14 years later he gets drafted to the same team as Dirk and gets to learn from one of the greatest European players of all time.
I’m not even gonna lie I consider myself a sports analyst and something just told me to look up dirk I always knew dirk was cold don’t get me wrong I always knew he was a bad man and I alway known him for being the most consistent player around and completely unguardable I watched the dirk vs lebron all that I watch a lil bit of good dirk to when I was a shorty don’t get me wrong I know dirk was cold but I never remember him being so cold off the dribble like this and this man right here is a triple threat player I never knew this shit is a masterpiece and his handles are extremely underrated this man could cross u up🤦🏾♂️

Golden era of PFs. Dirk, Duncan, KG, Bosh, Amare, etc…
If you don't love Dirk you have a problem!!!
He ball handling is so underrated though.. The Legend Dirk
Nah 0:23 travel
Way ahead of his time, he would be killing it today in his prime
Nah
@@nbastalgiacritic1751 shut up. Casual ass😂
Some people thought 2011 was prime dirk, naaa this is prime dirk!
Absolutely agree
Kd is Dirk with handles, I feel like he is gonna play like this on the nets because of the energy
I think KD watched Dirk a lot and learned......
@@csy9366
@Jamal Burch
Both KD and DIrk found there own way to play post.
And it worked ;)
Back to the point, KD learned from Dirk and he found its own way to play.
KD can also play defense
The 06 finals was the hardest for me to ever watch. Probably always will be. I grew up a Lakers fan. Dirk was my 2nd favorite player behind Kobe. I modeled my game after him. I was a big Wade fan too. Dallas went up 2-0 and wade snapped 4 games in a row. Great series. Just tough to see someone had to lose lol
Dirk redefined big man. Always awesome to watch him get buckets
Offensively, he was the greatest power forward of all time
No doubt.
Yup
Tbh if dirk was playing with Lakers or Celtics im pretty sure he will get all the recognitions that he deserve. People just remember dirk on that 2011 championship till retirement. Thats why people and media was not giving him praises and credits when he was in his prime.
Nowitzki is the best offensive PF in the history of basketball. But his choice to retire at age 40-41 was not so good. He had to retire in 2013 at age 35.
@@ivantheterrible4317 Giannis is best offensive pf in history
I needed this !
Today I was thinking about Goat SZN of Dirk and you make it. Thanks bro, you're a Goat!!!
Hugs from Brazil!!!! 🇧🇷

@@alien4ever Thx, bro! I'll check it.
This hurts because he got robbed of his first ring. And in 07 if the Mavs would've played anyone else but the warriors they would've won that title as well. Even when dirk scored 50 against gsw that year the Mavs lost. Dirk is so underrated
His shot is so perfect. Rarely touches the rim
you just couldn't contest his shot...let alone block it. Dirk was unbelievable back then
Greatest offensive power forward to ever play. People don't realize how efficient Dirk was throughout his career. In his prime he was alot more athletic than people like to give him credit for. His jump shot was poetry in motion.
2nd greatest PF of all-time behind only Timmy.
THE GOAT! UNGUARDABLE
I thank you so much for this man. Always great work. Blessings
Who would’ve thought right after my comment “much love from Dallas Texas” you would drop a dirk video GOAT channel

@@alien4ever that was amazing ! Great share ! Thank you very much bro
@@pk_fauxtaux No problem bro! Great to know you liked the video
Damn I knew dirk had a jumper but damn I didn't know he had handles holy shit😲🔥
He was a nightmare too bad people are too young to realize what dirk nowitzki brought to the nba.
This is one of the coldest MVP season videos ever, Dirk was an absolute monster
@KeepitMelo 41 one year? Lol
I've been waiting awhile for dirk's reel, great video! Here are a few suggestions: 2007 Tony Parker, 93 Michael Jordan, 95 Hakeem Olajuwon and MVP Karl Malone!
one of the greatest seasons i witnessed in 30 years watching nba basketball. the swish sound, like ASMR 😎👌
Pure Bucket getter!! Elite hoops🐐🐐
@@marcusmcneal7453 i’m convinced he has the best swish of all time. everytime he shoots you think it’s going in
his jumpshot is so pure, what a beautiful arc
Dirk was shooting those mid range shots right in the defenders face. He had no respect for defense, unstoppable
I thought does catch and shoot most of the time 😂
I'm glad I watched this, he was actually a PF Kobe with his mid range game
Everyone says Kobe got robbed of MVP in 06 but really it was Dirk who should’ve won it imo
Nah it was either kobe or Lebron
@@vamoneygroup no
Kobe should have won 06 and Dirk’s 07
@@vamoneygroup nope. I said what I said
@@d3adyoutubeaccount no
Dirk should’ve won MVP that year he had no other all star on that Mavs team and they still went to the Finals
Basketball is not about all stars. 😂 Dirk had some great teams.
I’ve been waiting for you to post this season for Dirk for months! Lol 🙏🏾
The most skilled power forward ever
Dirk was so damn pure some nights it was laughable.
The fact that Dirk average 97-98 in NBA 2k6 and 2k7 are just insane.
Ich kann immer und immer wieder ihn anschauen .. einfach genial
dirk nowitzki is the reason why i watch nba since 2004 and when he retired
He was unstoppable on offense elite set shooter from mid range and 3. Elite shooter of the dribble hand a handle and had hella post moves
Better than any PF today
1:46-2:26 when you need him the most, he delivers
legit my 2nd favorite player of all time. i use to love those mav teams back then. dirk was pulling up in ur grill no matter what
You always listening to the fans man that's why you the best nba highlight youtuber now amazing stuff
this was such a good season, this was right when they made that rule change and everyone went crazy. nash, lebron, kobe, dirk and wade all had big cases for mvp, probably the only year other than 1990 where multiple players had legit cases for mvp
Dirk will always be in my top 5 of all time!
Surprised you chose this season over his MVP but I’m thankful nonetheless. You the 🐐.
Imagine luka being a 6 yr old kid in Slovenia seeing highlights like this on TV and turning to his mom like "Mom, when I get older I'm gonna be like Dirk Nowitzki." 14 years later he gets drafted to the same team as Dirk and gets to learn from one of the greatest European players of all time.
thanks for this video, I remember this season in school fondly
Favorite series on youtube
Perfect timing on this upload, thanks 🤟
People forget, Dirk actually played as a 3.
I’m not even gonna lie I consider myself a sports analyst and something just told me to look up dirk I always knew dirk was cold don’t get me wrong I always knew he was a bad man and I alway known him for being the most consistent player around and completely unguardable I watched the dirk vs lebron all that I watch a lil bit of good dirk to when I was a shorty don’t get me wrong I know dirk was cold but I never remember him being so cold off the dribble like this and this man right here is a triple threat player I never knew this shit is a masterpiece and his handles are extremely underrated this man could cross u up🤦🏾♂️
MORE BLESSING TO THIS CHANNEL♥️
everybody is talking about king james..but dirk to me is the real king or the goat for he is humble and winning a ring without a 2nd or 3rd superstar and 2011 championship dirk facing big 3...everybody loves dirk for his humility.
Unguardable. Unstoppable. 💪
That Boy Is Good Automatic Bucket! A lot of people forgot he was super nice
