  • Dirk Nowitkzi was and remains a basketball folk hero. He will be talked about and remembered far into the future. I will tell my children about him - his impetuous offense, his undeniable will, and his immortal 2011 playoff run.
But believe me when I say - it wasn't always like that.

A 2-0 Finals lead blown and a 67 win season gone to waste.
Then, imagine how he must have felt walking up to the podium to receive the 2011 championship, after defeating the Lamarcus and Brandon Roy led Blazers, the Lakers, the OKC Thunder, and the Super-team Miami Heat!

My friend had a poster of Dirk in his room and I remember thinking "he's kind of goofy looking for basketball player". 2011 cemented Dirk more than any other single title for a player. Before 2011, he was the guy who won the MVP after losing to a 8 seed...and he legacy was in question

What a great story about overcoming failures and building a legacy with a franchise! I wish we had more stories like his. Despite the playoff losses year after year, I believe Dirk led the Mavs to 50+ wins for 11 straight seasons, which is impressive given the depth of the West during that time. As a big Bron guy, 2011 was a wildly disappointing finals series but man Dirk was just on another level you HAVE to respect it. Honestly one of, if not the greatest, playoff runs of all time. Still remember playing those early 2010's 2K's against my friends and since I was so much better, I'd make it a challenge to beat them with only one person scoring, and Dirk made that so easy with his post fade. Honestly was kind of unfair to my friends, Dirk was just that guy. If they ever redo the logo, I'm still on board with making it Dirk's fade. It's just picture perfect

Hey clayton! Just wanted to say I've been a big fan for a couple of years and love rewatching your videos every few times. And for a player I'd love to see a video on is Hakeem. A lot of people respect his legacy and have him easily top 15, but I really havent seen any videos that actually dive into his career or his two championships. Regardless of if you do, keep up the great work!

Great video as always. I do think that one thing that was worth mentioning about the We Believe Warriors was that Don Nelson was the coach and he was a former coach of Dirks. So that knowledge about Dirk was a key element in harassing Dirk into a bad series.

Blastoise Dirk absolutely ascended on the 2011 playoffs man. Being a die hard Lakers fan at the time, it was tough seeing the three peat dream die. Looking back at it, couldn’t be happier for Dirk and that Mavs squad pulling off such a Cinderella run

Clayton I got nothing but respect for your documentation of the sport I love so much. If u are questioning what should be your next video like many RUclipsrs do after finishing one might I suggest a player who u showed briefly in your preview video for the legends of the game who weren't good enough for "Making the Case" and that player is Derrick "Pooh" Rose. Even if fans don't give him the respect he deserves everyone here in Chicago looks at him like a true hero. I would love to see u give him his flowers for his "what if" career. I know u said Walton is the biggest What-if and R.I.P to Bill but in all due respect I say it's D. Rose. Just a thought and thanks for the vids

I'm back to rewatch this video because it gives me inspiration that losers can rewrite their history by flipping the script. And that as long as we want it, we can leave the looser luncheon behind 🌞

In Dirk's last season which was Luka's first, Doncic made a point to not pass Nowitzki the ball, even when he was wide-open for three. It was and still is underappreciated just how much Luka tried to sabotage Dirk's legacy.
Luka had a total of 429 assists that season, only 23 of those were Dirk baskets. For comparison, Devin Harris had a total of 122, while 21 were for Nowitzki.

coming back from a 2-0 finals collapse and a 67 win choke is so hard psychologically. if that happened to some young stars of today, i doubt if they can mentally overcome that. that's why 2011 was so sweet and crazy.

"That 2011 championship meant more to [Dirk's legacy] than any other championship meant to any other player."
100% agree. I don't know how much of the audience actually watched Dirk or listened to sports talking heads at the time, but until that title he was held up as the paragon of the "soft Euro". The guy with no heart who could never win in the dog-eat-dog NBA. He won MVP and lost in the first round to an 8 seed! And today he's, if anything, overvalued _(not that he wasn't great, but he really isn't an all-time, inner-circle Hall of Famer. He was fantastic, HOF-worthy for sure, but he's not all-time top 10 or even top 20)._ It really helps that he's a nice, humble, smart, likeable guy, but without the 2011 title he wouldn't have anywhere near the respect he does today.

Dirk will forever be the greatest Mav ever. It will take ALOT for someone to dethrone him in Dallas. We love Dirk, 2011 was a magical year.
