How Dirk Nowitzki rewrote his legacy

- Dirk Nowitkzi was and remains a basketball folk hero. He will be talked about and remembered far into the future. I will tell my children about him - his impetuous offense, his undeniable will, and his immortal 2011 playoff run.
But believe me when I say - it wasn't always like that.

I should've emphasized the *deutch* in "deutchman", but I was saving it for when I absolutely nailed "Holger Geschwindner"
hi clayton crowley
; ) nice one - by the way, nobody is laughing at the Knicks anymore - do you like the All-In Move ?
Its spelled „deutsch“ btw :)
@@gintuner4371 thank u. wanted to comment that too. Germans... 😀
Ah, I just commented on this. Deutchmen is not a word. Dutchman is. But that is someone from "the netherlands". We would gladleer adopt Dirk however. He is better then our Rik Smits. 😂❤🎉🎉🎉
As a native Spurs fan, we have immense respect for Dirk especially after his chip against Lebron. Man, basketball was so intense in the 2000s
The same goes for us Mavericks fans and Duncan. Two of the greatest to do it and we saw them in the same division for almost two decades straight playing one another. We were truly spoiled and it took this long to realize it
to be TOTALLY honest i still DON'T like a.c green david robinson and mark cuban AT ALL i still SOMEWHAT like the mavs spurs university of houston and rockets and i still LOVE a player who in my OPINION was a star being moses malone ALMOST as much as a player who in my OPINION was a legend being hakeem olajuwon
Me too, as a diehard Spurs fan. I remember the tribute the Spurs gave Dirk in his final season with the Mavs and how moved Dirk was. Great rivalry always with the Spurs. So glad the Mavs beat the Heat!!
Has a Mavericks fan I love the fact that that is the one stain on LeBron's Legacy that keeps him out of the goat conversation
I'm a spurs fan who lives in Dallas, during those years I rooted for the Mavs and Dirk whenever it wasn't against the spurs
If Clayton posts a video, I drop everything to watch it
Favts
Yep. Clayton and EthosLab are the only two RUclipsrs I do that for
me when i’m holding a 100lb weight but the clayton noti goes off
That's sad. Hopefully you don't have a baby.
@@timhall5382😂
I absolutely love the contrast of “Dwayne Wade was the imminent future, Shaq was the near past, this was Dirk’s time to be the present” and “A Blastoise of a Dirk” Nothing but poetry.
Thank you for always delivering such high quality videos, filled with so much emotion and information! My RUclips goat, the greatest NBA RUclipsr there is 🙌🏽
Blastoise got me rolling
Best content on here
They might think it's glazing, but that's love though
just when the world needed him most, the legend returns
He never went away, he just uploads videos less often than a lot of people, but his videos are excellent at what they do.
In particular the writing.
Walton in '77. Hakeem in '94. Dirk in '11. The most legendary championship runs by single superstar teams.
no disrespect but in my OPINION those elite players are ranked #1 legend hakeem olajuwon a DISTANT #2 star bill walton and a DISTANT #3 star dirk nowitzki
What’s your opinion of Duncan ‘03?
Rick Barry in 74-75. Even though it's been awhile.
Walton in 77 was especially dangerous. That guy made the HOF with sub-par stats overall due to the fact of "when he was healthy, he was a beast" factor. The greatest compliment I ever heard given a basketball player was :
"of all the players I've ever coached, or seen play...I'd take Bill Walton healthy above the rest" -- John Wooden
As a bucks fan I’m not to fond of you leaving off Giannis
He is my favorite NBA player. I'm aware he's not the greatest, but his personality, humbleness, loyalty to his team through 21 years and his 2011. run make him the greatest in my eyes. He's my idol.
He's my goat, im very biased being from Dallas. But man this guy was and still is special
@waynedamron8006 Any arguments? 😂
Maaan I love Dirk, he is the true example of earned not given. He had one of the best playoff run ever, the best example why we love this sport, a true magical story.
Unsigned hype right here. Netflix , Hulu, someONE! Sign this man to a fair contract I can’t believe this is still free
he acc does some vids for bleacher report!
@@user-fb4ev2ir9p thanks for letting me know

@@jaysontolera238 nah stop this fam, if you genuinely love his content you'd want him to go ahead and do better things.
Imagine how much, pain, regret, and misery Dirk must have been feeling as he walked up to the podium to receive his 2007 MVP.
A 2-0 Finals lead blown and a 67 win season gone to waste.
Then, imagine how he must have felt walking up to the podium to receive the 2011 championship, after defeating the Lamarcus and Brandon Roy led Blazers, the Lakers, the OKC Thunder, and the Super-team Miami Heat!
A career redemption doesn’t get much better than that. 🥶🏆
Dirk is the reason I got into and love basketball. I remember it was 2002 and I was in 4th grade. My friend had a poster of Dirk in his room and I remember thinking "he's kind of goofy looking for basketball player". Cut to a few months later and I ended up accidentally catching a Mavs game where Dirk just went off. Became a Mavs fan that day. It's nice to finally see Dirk getting his flowers.
this might be ur funniest video yet, banger after banger
The drake, the HADES REFERENCE, BROTHER. Literally the best sports YTer ever and it might not even need the word "sports" there.
Been a watching bball on a pretty constant basis for 22 years now and this vid is spot on.
2011 cemented Dirk more than any other single title for a player. Before 2011, he was the guy who won the MVP after losing to a 8 seed...and he legacy was in question
And after 2011 Dallas didn't win a single playoff series with him again (though not his fault)
He still could’ve made the Hall of Fame without 2011, but he’d certainly not be considered a consensus top 25 or so player ever without that title.
I love Dirk. This is just brilliant. Thank you.
Dirk is my favorite player of all time. And you my favorite basketball youtuber clayton as soon I saw notification I skipped my dinner to watch it. This is just amazing.
This is how I feel when people rave about Timmy so I’m glad you got to enjoy this excellent tribute to Dirk
Same !!!
Watch it with dinner lol!
Your past 4 videos have been legitimately my favorite story’s in all of basketball. 04 pistons, Manu, Dirk. You love ball the same way I do and i appreciate you for it.
Dirk’s 2011 playoff run got me back into basketball after having been soured by a decade plus of Lakers/Spurs reruns in June.
What’d you think of the Pistons, Heat, and Celtics teams that won?
That’s a refreshing take lol
The goat dropped
The thing about Dirk and those Mavs is that they were known for giving up leads and crumbling under pressure (even if that isn't entirely precise).
In 2011 they were just indestructible. Always coming from behind, never giving up and with Dirk being Mr Clutch himself.
Loving the extra personality in this vid
The quality of videos is getting better and better each time! I love how you’re implementing humor more and more
I wish Steve Nash never left Dallas. Dirk and Nash were actual best friends and it's a shame we only got a couple seasons with them playing together before Nash was MVP Nash.
I dont think they would have won a ring in 2011 with Nash at point. His defense was terrible and if you can't defend at that position your defense can really suffer. Jason Terry was the perfect side-kick to Dirk.
I’m a simple man, Clayton posts, I watch immediately.
Amazing! I remember those playoffs and hearing you tell that story is just amazing. I'm a Celtics fan, but man, I loved watching Dirk play. And having him and the Mavs put down Lebron and the Heat was just an incredible feeling. Like you said, everyone was rooting for the Mavs on that one.
I was definitely a Dirk doubter especially after that loss to the 8 seeded Warriors. But after the 2011 chip, I became a Dirk fan for life! What a great story about overcoming failures and building a legacy with a franchise! I wish we had more stories like his. Despite the playoff losses year after year, I believe Dirk led the Mavs to 50+ wins for 11 straight seasons, which is impressive given the depth of the West during that time. That didn’t get talked about enough so thank you for highlighting his journey!!
made me cry fr
I've watched Dirk Nowitzki since the beginning of the 1998-1999. He's the reason I watched every Dallas Mavericks game until the 2011 NBA Finals game 6 was over. I have Dallas Mavericks jerseys and t-shirts of Dirk Nowitzki with the basketball shorts in my closet.
Same. I was Dirk and Mavs obsessed. I am just so happy for him that he won the championship. I tear up every time I watch a video like this.. what an amazing player and an amazing man.
Clayton's rambling, watching the games go bad for the Mavs is the standard Dallas sports fan experience
sisyphus to aioli comparison within 20 seconds is dastardly work clayton. i salute you
Can’t forget when Caron Butler got hurt for the Mavs they went under the radar even more because of how significant people thought that would be on their playoff chances! Great video!
If the NBA is smart they hire Clayton to do this narrative masterpieces, this is just exceptional content
Another classic Clayton video 🔥
That game 1 against the Thunder in 2011 was the game you gotta watch to see how insanely good this guy was.
48pts on 12-15 from the floor.
Before the series started Ibaka said he didn't need help guarding Dirk.
@@bigred9991 not even attempting a three. The Thunder were so desperate that they threw Thabo freaking Sefolosha in the cage and told him to try and stop Dirk. He immediately hit 2 fadeaways right between his eyes and the Thunder knew at that moment that they were cooked
I definitely cried ! wat a man - what a role model !
You are absolutely correct. Dirk rehabbed his image big time with that win.
the first clayton video i saw was the manu one soon after it was posted, i watched a lot of his videos and have been eagerly waiting for a new video to drop. absolute banger video, i love dirk. i wish i really could’ve seen him for the majority of his career but i only really started paying attention to basketball around 2010, i at least got to watch him dismantle the heat and it was one of the greatest performances i’ve ever seen
Incredible video! I have always loved Dirk's story in Dallas. Kobe even tempted him, telling Dirk they have a place for him in the Lakers. When all these stars were starting to do the unforgivable and assembling super teams, Dirk stuck with Dallas and won it all against very good teams, very well made teams and a super duper team.
Best NBA documentarian around
THANK YOU, CLAYTON 🥹 Dirk is my favorite player of all-time, and I’m so happy to see you finally cover him.
I remember this all of this all too well, and seeing it recapped with your editing, humor, and usual fantastic writing brought a tear to my eye at the end.
Love your work, keep it up.
Danke, Clayton, wieder mal überragend!
Only 7 minutes and 30 seconds in and this is already one of my favorite yt vids of all time
I love Clayton, but this new style of humour is something I didn't expect, I love it! Good! Bad... I mean good!
As a Mavs fan, I really needed this after the finals this year.
I live in Dallas and have always been indifferent towards the Mavs. But watching Dirk during that championship run impressed me. Must be one of the most clutch performances in NBA history.
This was my first time watching a video from your channel, Dirk is my favorite NBA player of all time, THIS VIDEO ROCKSSSSSSSS INSTANT SUB!! KEEP UP THE AWESOME VIDEOS!!
As a Blastoise enjoyer this was a great watch.
Dirk is still a top 6 Power Forward All Time. 1 MVP, 1 championship, 1 finals MVP, 14 All Star and 12 All NBA Teams isn't bad. And he is probably 27th on the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. And he did it going against some legendary teams in both conferences.
Top 6😂 more like top 2. Timmy is 1 and Dirk is 2.
@bigred9991 Uh I have him behind
1) Duncan 5 Championships 2 MVP's
2) Garnett 1 Championship 1 MVP 1 DPOY
3) Karl Malone 2 MVP's
4) Bob Petit 1 Championship 2 MVP's
5) Giannis Antetokounmpo 1 Championship 2 MVP's 1 DPOY
Sorry, these guys did more although he is right up there with them.
@@bigred9991 Based on what, your feelings? You have to look at championships, MVP's, scoring titles, block titles, DPOY's, rebound titles, All Star, All NBA and All Defensive Teams as well.
Just want you to know, I don’t even watch basketball but your videos bring me such joy dude
Will forever use that "lied about" line in reference to MJ after the Yahoo article
As a big Bron guy, 2011 was a wildly disappointing finals series but man Dirk was just on another level you HAVE to respect it. Honestly one of, if not the greatest, playoff runs of all time. Still remember playing those early 2010's 2K's against my friends and since I was so much better, I'd make it a challenge to beat them with only one person scoring, and Dirk made that so easy with his post fade. Honestly was kind of unfair to my friends, Dirk was just that guy. If they ever redo the logo, I'm still on board with making it Dirk's fade. It's just picture perfect
This is not an exaggeration.. Dirk is Hall of fame player but an even better human being. Will forever be my Mavs 🐐 for that reason.
As far as I know Nowitzki is also a very humble relaxed person. Probably the best German export of the last 30 years. :-) It's too bad he couldn't crown his career with the German national team. Great guy. Danke Dirk für die tollen Momente.
time flies man, dirk is the reason i become a NBA fan. the 2011 run is insane
amazing storytelling, great video! my favorite player of all time by far
I still think Hakeem's back to back runs in '94 and '95 might have been a bit tougher but Dirk's '11 run in definitely in there aswell at the top.
He definitely remade his legacy right there...And ended LeBron's GOAT case at the same time.
Einfach eine Legende! Great Video
I'll never forget this run. What a fun time. Dirk was that guy
Great video as usual Clayton, hope we can get a Steve Nash one eventually 🤞
Clayton is the best basketball RUclipsr. Wish more sports media could positively examine players careers. I’m gonna make suggestions of players to see, but I’m here for any video from this channel. Dwayne Wade
Jason Kidd
John Stockton
George gervin
Elgin Baylor
Hakeem
Another great job. By the way, your biography about Bill Walton is the best I've ever seen.
I continue to love your vids Clayton but I miss the stats you used to put up on screen like with the Making the Case series! They were such a staple of your videos haha, could you bring them back please!!
Slayer of Kobe, the Thunder Big Three, and the Heatles.
Might as well call him “The Headhunter”.
The editing here man... amazing video
Nowitzki made 24 consecutive free throws without missing in game 1 against the Thunder setting a world record for a playoff game. He also made 74 consecutive free throws without missing during the playoffs which was crazy.
The goat is back 🙌
Another video, another masterpiece from my favorite NBA youtuber. I mean, what's new for him at this point?
Shoutout from the 🇵🇭
Great video and love your homour!!
And yet, another masterpiece... Then and forever
Hey clayton! Just wanted to say I've been a big fan for a couple of years and love rewatching your videos every few times. And for a player I'd love to see a video on is Hakeem. A lot of people respect his legacy and have him easily top 15, but I really havent seen any videos that actually dive into his career or his two championships. Regardless of if you do, keep up the great work!
Great video as always. I do think that one thing that was worth mentioning about the We Believe Warriors was that Don Nelson was the coach and he was a former coach of Dirks. So that knowledge about Dirk was a key element in harassing Dirk into a bad series.
Blastoise Dirk absolutely ascended on the 2011 playoffs man. Being a die hard Lakers fan at the time, it was tough seeing the three peat dream die. Looking back at it, couldn’t be happier for Dirk and that Mavs squad pulling off such a Cinderella run
Clayton, I love a lot of your videos, but I think this is the best one yet! Keep it up!
I NEED THE HAKEEM VIDEO NEXT!!!!! THE DREAMMMM
8:00 thank you I been saying this I miss when player hit their awards in front of the fans
Clayton I got nothing but respect for your documentation of the sport I love so much. If u are questioning what should be your next video like many RUclipsrs do after finishing one might I suggest a player who u showed briefly in your preview video for the legends of the game who weren't good enough for "Making the Case" and that player is Derrick "Pooh" Rose. Even if fans don't give him the respect he deserves everyone here in Chicago looks at him like a true hero. I would love to see u give him his flowers for his "what if" career. I know u said Walton is the biggest What-if and R.I.P to Bill but in all due respect I say it's D. Rose. Just a thought and thanks for the vids
Clayton Crowley is one fine story teller, incredible piece about an incredible player...!!!
Dude, you are so good at this. Thank you for doing it. It's inspiring!
If Clayton posts a video, i pull over on the interstate to watch.
The aioli line was perfect. My god
beautiful video
my favorite basketball youtuber make a video about my favorite basketball player--i think i'm in heaven
One of the best championship runs. NBA movie from these finals is a classic.
I'm back to rewatch this video because it gives me inspiration that losers can rewrite their history by flipping the script. And that as long as we want it, we can leave the looser luncheon behind 🌞
Awesome vid as always, man.
U did your thang ❤
My man is back to speak his wisdom
My favorite playoff run. Dirk is a legend
Damn this content creator dope
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR A DIRK VIEDO LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOO
Right on time for my break
Not going to lie, I needed this after watching the Mavs blow it in the Finals recently.
if the man makes a video, i'm GONNA watch it!
If what happened to the 06-07 Mavs happens to the 24-25 Mavs I’ll cry 🥲
In Dirk's last season which was Luka's first, Doncic made a point to not pass Nowitzki the ball, even when he was wide-open for three. It was and still is underappreciated just how much Luka tried to sabotage Dirk's legacy.
Luka had a total of 429 assists that season, only 23 of those were Dirk baskets. For comparison, Devin Harris had a total of 122, while 21 were for Nowitzki.
coming back from a 2-0 finals collapse and a 67 win choke is so hard psychologically. if that happened to some young stars of today, i doubt if they can mentally overcome that. that's why 2011 was so sweet and crazy.
12:21 "Free Coffee, Free Donuts" (because that's the only ring you're gonna get)
Ah shiiiit, here we fucking go baby!
“He didn’t join a super team he became a superstar” 🔥🔥🔥🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
"That 2011 championship meant more to [Dirk's legacy] than any other championship meant to any other player."
100% agree. I don't know how much of the audience actually watched Dirk or listened to sports talking heads at the time, but until that title he was held up as the paragon of the "soft Euro". The guy with no heart who could never win in the dog-eat-dog NBA. He won MVP and lost in the first round to an 8 seed! And today he's, if anything, overvalued _(not that he wasn't great, but he really isn't an all-time, inner-circle Hall of Famer. He was fantastic, HOF-worthy for sure, but he's not all-time top 10 or even top 20)._ It really helps that he's a nice, humble, smart, likeable guy, but without the 2011 title he wouldn't have anywhere near the respect he does today.
Dirk will forever be the greatest Mav ever. It will take ALOT for someone to dethrone him in Dallas. We love Dirk, 2011 was a magical year.
