  • John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was one of the greatest portrait artists of his time. While he is best known for his powerful paintings, he largely ceased painting portraits in 1907 and turned instead to charcoal drawings to satisfy portrait commissions. These drawn portraits represent a substantial, yet often overlooked, part of his practice, and demonstrate the same sense of immediacy, psychological insight, and mastery of chiaroscuro that animate Sargent’s sitters on canvas. The Morgan Library & Museum is proud to present the first major exhibition to explore these expressive portraits in charcoal, John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Charcoal, on view from October 4, 2019, through January 12, 2020.

No. Let's be realistic, shall we? JSS can't be the greatest because he gave up on portraiture, and in the art history, that's NOT how the excellence is achieved. That was his greatest flaw. He is the last great portrait artist of the Classical Academic era. After him, the havoc and jumble of the 20th century's modernist sado-masochism. The only decent portrait artist after JSS, that persevered and did not give up on high standards, vas Pietro Annigoni. In some ways Pietro excels and does things that JSS never even imagined. Because JSS gave up too soon and Pietro did not.

I'd like to thank Laurel Peterson, Moore Curatorial Fellow at The Morgan Library & Museum, for the highly interesting information about the portraits in charcoal made by John Singer Sargent when he decided to stop executing oil portraits as regularly as he had done before 1907.
Thanks for sharing the highlights of the Exhibition which I find simply wonderful, as wonderful as the Exhibition Catalogue by Richard Louis Ormond.
Wishing you the very best !

"...demonstrate the same sense of immediacy and psychological sensitivity that animates Sargent sitters on canvas."
It might be just me but I always find words like this...underwhelming. IMO, an art exhibition should be educational and curated from an artistic point of view, rather than a place to showcase fancy but empty and superficial praises.
That said, the Curatorial Fellow's comment was really interesting and informative.
