this video reminded me I never thanked you, THANK YOU SO MUCH! you made my solo 500 mile Appalacian trail hike ( I only had 2 month) . I figured out all the affordable gear I bought to make that hike possible from your videos, Thank you!
Great explanation on how some RUclipsrs run a small business. It must feel a lot like running a sole proprietorship, a one person business, where the pressure is always there. Been there. Good for for you, you're a hard worker to make it nine years. Happy Trails!
Your videos are excellent and my 2 adult daughters who have been back country enthusiast from a very young age really enjoy your informative videos! And we recommend them to young people we know. The fact that you don’t have sponsors is incredible and very refreshing (as most RUclips enthusiasts strive for them). Your dehydrator example was good but we would really like to hear your experiences of dehydration from home rather than buying commercial products. @@ginginami I think the reason Dixie may have left this joke in the video is because she has used several video clips in the past showing how mangled and gross her feet can get while hiking. 😝
That's exactly why you are the best hiking and outdoor RUclipsr. Thank you so much for that. Not only is it annoying to have to watch minutes of commercials in RUclips videos (especially if you are a RUclips Premium customer), it also makes you doubt the objectivity of the content creator. So thank you Dixie for your genuineness, integrity and guts to make very good videos without sponsorship. I wish you further success. Greetings from Germany
Thanks Dixie for encouraging people to get out there, with great information and keeping it real, This year for the first time I'm following AT through hikers. Some have zero chance of making it. They are well meaning I'm sure, but will their final stories encourage their viewers to get out there. Anyway the good news is, by following them, I ended up finding your channel.
Jessica…thank you for your honesty! I discovered your channel right after you finished the AT and have followed you ever since. I have enjoyed and learned so much concerning backpacking and Thruhiking from you. I watched your videos on the PCT SEVERAL TIMES to help prepare for my 2020 Thruhike of the PCT. You have inspired me, as well as thousands of others to get outdoors and enjoy God’s Creation. While I appreciate your honesty, I don’t think you owe anyone an explanation of how you earn a living. I’m sure you would make a lot more money as an engineer working for someone but you have chosen to do what you love and makes you happy. How you financially support yourself (unless you’re selling drugs 😁) is nobody’s business but yours. I’m glad you don’t take sponsorships. That’s what makes you so honest and trustworthy. (In fact, I’d like to use your statement on sponsorships for my RUclips channel, if I may). Please keep doing what you’re doing to support and inspire the Hiker Community. -J. Yes I know if I was reviewing a product and it turned out to be bad, I wouldn't want to feel pressured to sugar coat the review. Since I can't actually walk the trails anymore, I live vicariously through you. Keep on hiking!
It's called hustle, and you've got it. I so admire your work ethic. And wow, I feel old... Thinking about how I've been watching you for nearly eight years!!
I've got to say being inside the first thousand subscribers I can honestly say you certainly have helped me dial in my gear picks. I got half the AT done until my knees and ankle said otherwise. So looks like it will take two seasons. Thanks again for the insight.
I have watched couple of your videos and really enjoyed the content. I tell you love being on trail. I subscribed to your channel because of this video. Thanks for being true to your values.
You are by far the most informative and helpful person on RUclips and other platforms to help young and old like to get on the trail and stay on the trail myself included. Thank you.
Love it! I don't know quite why, but the technical aspects of how you accomplish this fascinates me. I may have to watch it repeatedly. I DO enjoy hearing alternative methods to accomplish things. Never could quite just stay in any boxes! Haven't back packed in decades, but still the love for it remains... only did a few bits of the AT years back... talked to people at BackPacker magazine, I think, who were hoping to establish the Pacific Crest Trail, and suggested the CDT to them... Years gone by, sometimes life interferes with plans. But, it is all good - wouldn't have given up what I've had. Enjoy watching your videos - especially the nature ones [though have been a "kit-aholic" since preschool watching Davy Crocket, Daniel Boone, etc.]. If I never manage to go again, seeing your videos, and a few others, is refreshing! I FEEL it, hear it, smell it... Thanks. I know, stupid of me to vent, but I hope that just made the "thank you" point!
Dixie, Well done for keeping your integrity and having a truly independent viewpoint. That is worth so much more than any financial stability. During Lockdown when teaching in Amman, Jordan, I came across your videos Ali g with Darwin. You both documenting your travels allowed me to venture beyond the flat - confined for 48 hours at times. My family enjoyed the Jordan terrain- check out the Jordan Trail from Umm Qais to Aqaba via Petra. It would be a great bucket list Trail to do. My family is now living in South Korea and I’m enjoying hiking here. -12 C / 10 F temps here are a bit chilly compared to 45C / 113F highs in Jordan !
Thanks for what you do! I really enjoy your videos when you get on the trail and see (and share) the world. Glad you’ve found a way to fund your passion
My dear sister, allow me to congratulate you for preserving your personal integrity from the temptations that could potentially comprise them. You are not willing to sell your soul for a mess of pottage! That is one of the many reasons why I respect and admire you. Once lost (sold) integrity is next to impossible to get back. Stay true to your core values, young woman. Hold on to your self-respect. All the best to you and your family in these tempestuous times. Thank you for being uniquely you, Dixie!
My first time Backpacking was at Yosemite. In the backpackers site, most folks I met spoke about your reviews and experiences that you have shared. Staying away from monetizing that brand to stay true to your beliefs is truly commendable. ❤ your channel and content you post. Keep it going!
What great integrity, consideration for fans, and passion for backpacking. I do not backpack, but you two are a wonderful inspiration. Keep On Trekkin’ Happy Trails, IIICrows
At this stage of my life, hiking and backpacking feels more aspirational than possible but I still enjoy the videos that you put out. Hoping to get out more as my kids get older!
Dixie this is exactly the reason that I love your channel on here more than anyone's. Period. You keep it honest, transparent and true to the best of your knowledge. You are always very fair in your reviews of everything you review. Please Always be You Ms Dixie and don't sell out or be bought out to be a " you tube star ". As far as I'm concerned you are and will be THE ROCK STAR of the hiking, backpacking, camping, outdoorsy world. Thank you so much for all of your hard work, time and effort to put your videos out for us to enjoy and follow along with your adventures. You make it possible for me to enjoy what I cannot physically enjoy anymore due to numerous and advancing health issues and restraints. Take care, stay safe and happy travels for you and yours.
Have you ever thought about doing a cross-country through-hike? You could probably put together a good route by using the Trans-America Trail that dirt-bike riders use as a base to build off. The biggest detours would probably be in the West because you'd have to route around some very large desert areas.
Daisy, you're appreciated. I see other hiking-type people doing videos in which they clearly don't see that they're being compromised, or worse they see paid advertorials as being legit. For me, 15 years of buying car magazines ended in 2008 when I discovered via a new ford purchase that those so-called journalists knew about the issues but didn't tell the people who were paying for their advice. It's been great seeing how the big tech channels have now broken away from the influence of the massive tech corporations. Linus, Gamers Nexus, Jay, HW Unboxed... they've become a self-supporting "team" who call out bullying and shitty practices instead of quietly accepting it. But you don't have that kind of thing behind you and even if your area of interest is vastly smaller than tech, you're still relatively even smaller. It's great seeing you finding a way through it all. Happy 2023!
Really respect this about the channel, and this is one of the big reasons I tune into every episode. I know Dixie's gonna give an honest comparison of expensive dyneema tents when she's still cooking out of a banged up old grease pot from wal-mart, haha. Seriously though, your no-BS videos have taught me how to backpack and I can't thank you enough.
You are the reason I started backpacking! I am planning my AT Thru Hike right now and I watched your gear videos knowing that I can trust your opinions since you’re not sponsored.
Your honesty and integrity are just two of the reasons why I have been a subscriber since March of 2015 and Patron shortly after subscribing. I love the Patreon benefits! Keep up all the great work!
You have singlehandedly help me "get out there" Started with that amazon tent you recommended and its been a rabbit hole since then. Thank you so much!

Been enjoying your content for years. Not a hiker or even a camper, but I found your material so peaceful and educational, very becoming. I'm sorry I haven't been able to patreon but I thank those that do so that many of us folks can watch and be amazed at our own country (and now others!). Thank you Dixie and thank you all their "helpers". And i almost forgot - keep up the no sponsors and maintain your soul!!!!
I've followed you for years and up until recently didn't think I would ever get the opportunity to thru hike any of the big trails for all the reasons most never do. Crazy how things work though as my wife and I had just finished watching a film on the AT about a month ago when she looked at me and made the comment that if we wait til we retire for the opportunity, we may not be able to hike the AT. She then made the comment, lets quit our jobs and just do it. With a little more conversation and discussion, we are committing to drop our jobs and to thru hike the AT next year. Thank you for all the videos over the years on how you were able to do it and make it work, these videos have really helped us come to the point where we are going to make this happen.
Dixie you've inspired so many people not just to attempt a thru hike, but also even get outside for a day hike or even a weekend trip... it's an understatement the lives you've changed and I'm sure you're aware of some of those stories! If you ever did accept a sponsor in the future, I'm sure the majority of your community would understand you believe in the product(not necessarily gear related), but also use the opportunity to provide more content for your awesome viewer base!
Thanks for being on the up and up. While it can be interesting to learn about innovative products some channels are shameless infomercials. Your channel is refreshingly different.
Dixie, your integrity and passion could never be questioned. You were the first YT hiker I ever watched and you re-ignited my desire to hike the AT. It has been a goal most of my life, but life got in the way. I have not given up on it though...One day it will happen. Thank you for what you do. You inspire others to live life, instead of just going with the flow.
Dixie, that is what I love about you. Your advice is honest and to the point. If you recommend gear, I’m more inclined to purchase it. Thank you! You ROCK!
More than not taking sponsorship, you said you ordered your Durston tent anonymously and thus didn't get any special treatment. I'm really glad you're able to protect your authenticity.
So glad you were one of the first backpackers that I started following, as a (usually) solo female backpacker your advice as been indispensable. Thank you for being your authentic self and thanks for always stopping and saying hi to all the little critters on your hikes - seriously my favorite! Going to check into being a patron 😉
We've been following you since the beginning and we love you content. Your posts are educational and entertaining. Keep up the great work and we will be here to support that.
Thank you for staying true to your convictions. That's so rare and admirable these days and will pay off in the long run more than a sponsorship will in the short term.
This is just a great reminder as to why so many people fell in love with you right from the start! Thank you for the continued inspiration & awesome content!
You have been true to yourself and to us since the first hesitant step on the AT. And to think it was 8 years ago! Thanks for mentioning Aaron. I’ve said it before, he seems to understand the story you want to tell, he is a talented film maker and that includes the sound track! Thanks for being you!
Appreciate your honesty and integrity, keep up the wonderful videos on backpacking and nature. I hope you find an easy solution to eating healthier while on the trail, and then possibly share your discoveries with all of us who want to do likewise. Thanks Dixie.
I like your passion for the outdoors. You are very genuine. You are very inspiring. I wish we all could hike with you sometime. I’ve learned a lot about thriving in the outdoors from seeing your videos. Thanks for all the tips you’ve ever given us.
I like your channel better because you aren’t sponsored; the same with TheOutdoorGearReview, Luke doesn’t do sponsorships either. You both keep it real! Thanks for giving your honest opinion!
In no way shape or form do I discriminate, or recommend any influencer on how or what they do or don't do on their channel. What I do find interesting for those out there that do promote certain products, watch other channels, and as they grow, see for yourselves what products they are promoting. What you will find, the bigger they grow, the more certain products and companies show up. For those like Dixie here, the fact that she is staying true to herself, I applaud, this is what she feels she needs to do, and is honest and up front about it only exponentially shows hiw much she cares not only about her followers of the Channel but thise that are looking to get information about hiking and exploring the outdoors.
Wise choice Dixie. I followed some people that occassionally reviewed items in their genre. I liked their channels so cool. But then you see 10-20 creators receive and review the same item, guitars, flashlights, whatever that all got it free. Searching hard you find someone that PAID for the items and their review was nothing like the ones that got it free. I stopped watching people that fill their content with reviews of items they get for free.
Thank you for staying true to who you are! Your honest and passionate prespectives and opinions I think are a huge asset to the hiking community and helping the community grow. Such a positive influence and motivator. Stay golden and I look forward to more of you sharing your adventures with the world.
Thank you for staying true to your values and providing such useful information! And thank you for your donations to Boy Scouts! I am fortunate enough to serve as a Scoutmaster for a Boy Scout troop in Florida and was able to take a group of Scouts on a backpacking trip to New Mexico this summer thanks partially to donations. Thank you again for your continued service to the backpacking community!
Thank you, Dixie! Anyone thinks you're not legit just haven't watched your hiking videos. Amazing things happen to Dixie. I'm preparing for the AT ill headed toward Springer Mountain in a few weeks, I bet there isn't anyone getting ready that your videos haven't helped.
I'm 76 with bad knees, so I know I won't get to thru-hike, but I enjoy watching hiking videos for places I can't go. I do hike in local parks with my camera gear in a sling bag (along with plenty of water) in local and state parks. Some trails are really good, I think I once saw you in the Hocking Hills, one of my favorite areas. I also appreciate you carrying a real camera, as photography is one of my other interests. The one question I had after watching this video was "Do you have a day job?" Even seasonal/temporary? Cheers, Ted
We appreciate the honesty. I stopped following another big RUclipsr because it started to feel like he was always just plugging some specific brands which was sad because the earlier days were great hiking and reviews of all sorts of items. Thank you again Jess for great content.
I have always admired your integrity. Few people go back and hike miles they missed. You not only hiked areas of the PCT you missed due to fire closure, you brought us along with!
Right on, wish this would be the standard on RUclips. Thank you for all your effort and energy to help your fellow hikers!

I love your channel the way it is, and completely respect your refusal to be sponsored.
Thank you.
Homemade Wanderlust is a class act. You're absolutely correct about sponsorships reducing credibility. Thanks!
Dixie,
Well done for keeping your integrity and having a truly independent viewpoint.
It is called integrity, you are not swayed by sponsored contacts.
Kudos to you!
Yes Dixie! You're one of my favourite RUclipsrs, you stay true to your ethics and it shows through your amazing content!
My first time Backpacking was at Yosemite. In the backpackers site, most folks I met spoke about your reviews and experiences that you have shared. Staying away from monetizing that brand to stay true to your beliefs is truly commendable. ❤ your channel and content you post. Keep it going!
That's why I watch you, Dixie. You're real & you love what you do!
Putting values above money. How refreshing. Just one more reason to love you and your content, Dixie. Thank you so much for being you!
What great integrity, consideration for fans, and passion for backpacking. I do not backpack, but you two are a wonderful inspiration. Keep On Trekkin’
Happy Trails,
IIICrows
Thanks! Keep up your honesty!
Thank you! ♥️
I love your videos Dixie! I discovered your channel sometime last year and I love your down to earth style and sincerity.
“Those things”are very important to me,too, Dixie. I live my life by MY principles…..and so do you…..just one of the many reasons I appreciate and admire you so much! Thanks for being you…..you are truly an inspiration
You've just proved why I LOVE your channel! You're great content comes from great honesty, humility, values and warmth! Thanks!
This is why I continue to watch your videos year after year. I have a lot of respect for you, Dixie. Thank you for all the entertainment.
One of the things that set you appart is I feel your honesty comes through, and the joy of being out wherever you are is well communicated.
I love your videos! As a hiker and Scouter I want to thank you for your support of your local Boy Scouts. Thank you! 🎉
Love ya Dixie! You’re my OG RUclips hiker! Thanks for the transparency 🙏 happy hiking!
Thanks Dixie. Over the years you’ve given me so many great ideas for equipment and hiking styles. You’re an outdoor inspiration.
This is why I really do trust the opinions you share in your videos. Thanks so much for your sincerity and transparency!
Dixie, that is what I love about you. Your advice is honest and to the point. If you recommend gear, I’m more inclined to purchase it. Thank you! You ROCK!
iam glad that you are not Sponsored. to me it really takes away from the hiking experience. they just sell more than hiking.
I've never been a hiker but I subscribed a long time ago because I like your charm!
We've been following you since the beginning and we love you content. Your posts are educational and entertaining. Keep up the great work and we will be here to support that.
Honest opinions are best. Continue to be true to yourself!!
Such an inspiration! Thank you for letting us in on your adventures.
It’s been a few years of watching your content and I believe in your integrity. It’s heartening. 🌿
Totally appreciate your integrity!
We love you Dixie-----I have a been a fan since the beginning..
This is why you have always been one of my favorite RUclipsrs! Keep doing what you do Dixie!
We have been with you from the first step on the AT. You ROCK!!!
OMG, that shot at 3:08 is stupendous!
Thank you for staying true to your convictions. That's so rare and admirable these days and will pay off in the long run more than a sponsorship will in the short term.
This is great. Love your work, Dixie!
This is just a great reminder as to why so many people fell in love with you right from the start! Thank you for the continued inspiration & awesome content!
Integrity. Amazing. Perfect video, thanks for everything you do!
I have been with you since the AT. So proud of you.
Cool 😎and wow 8 years , congrats!
Thank you for not compromising yourself! Stay your authentic self and thanks for the videos.
To live 'under their means' is such a great example for us all. Humble living in order to achieve difficult goals. Very thankful for your channel!
You introduced me to a hobby that saved my life. I appreciate all you do so much.
"I hate shopping " I totally feel this. Much love.
Thanks for being who you are Dixie. agree if a person is sponsored you really can't give a honest review. love you stay safe
And this is why I follow your channel. ❤
I don't hike but always watch your videos. Enjoy them. I do ride horses and mules plan on riding the CDT. God bless you young lady
You are such a sweet soul, the world needs more people like you in it 🥂
I have always admired your integrity. Few people go back and hike miles they missed. You not only hiked areas of the PCT you missed due to fire closure, you brought us along with! I have more gear to buy yet for my planned AT hike. I intend to use your links for things I plan to buy. You rock Dixie!
Have you considered hiking the Ice Age Trail? In Wisconsin, 1200 miles
