I just want to say thank you. My mother isn’t doing well. She has copd, congestive heart failure and I’m really not sure what else. She hates doctors and is very hard headed. She’s 69. I recently got engaged to a man whom I’ve known for over 6 years. He is a Vietnam Veteran. So, on top of the age difference (I’m 38 he’s 76) he has several health problems including prostate cancer. He has not seen a doctor in years. I am completely overwhelmed with all the appointments and medications. So, now I am caring for two loved ones. But your short and simple video truly helped me.. Thank you
I am a new caregiver and did not know what to expect. My client is not difficult in itself. The hardest thing is the lifting where lifting support does not work. But I am learning a lot. HOw to advocate for the client for things that are needed to care for them. How much delay is involved and constant reminding of tasks to do that can go under for the day when unexpected events happen. I like when you say, rest when they rest. One thing I noticed is that is all I do when I get home. I can hardly eat while I am on "duty", then starv when I leave. Selfcare has become a priority after leaving the client. Thank you for the post. I hope to learn more that make my caregiving more effective.
Great video Dee! My mom passed about 13 months ago, but one thing I found helped me stay on top of meds was to put each dose in med tray dispensers. I had several of different sizes and enough to fill up for two weeks at a time. I wrote each persons name on “their” trays. I also kept a notepad with dosing times written down. Sure helped my brain out, I promise! At the time I was keeping up with 4 adults daily medications along with everything else. When you are low on sleep it’s easy to get meds mixed up, forget when the last dose was, etc. Hope this helps someone just starting out with caregiving. Be blessed! 😊
Omg i'm relief and crying at the same time watching this. Mom got a stroke attack a week a go now she's discharge from hospital but her right hand and leg still very much weak. I feel so overwhelmed at first cryin much thinking maybe it's my fault to not prevent thia with lots of what if-s thought and yes keep checking on her thru her sleep. Now i'm feeding myself with lots of information about being a caregiver hope i cud do an awesome job like you did.
Oh I am so sorry to hear about your mom. But, I'm sure happy you found my channel to help you out in some areas caring for a stroke patient. I would continue watching the series I created. Also, look into caregiving support somewhere online. That would also be a great resource to have!
So glad I found you, I am a shoot-from-the-hip caregiver, caring for my husband after a bad tractor accident, then he has recovered from that now he has something else the doctors don't know what yet. However, he needs someone here all the time. After three years of this, I guess it is here to stay. I work full time plus we get no help from family, so I am on my own with this. Your advice so far has helped me so much. Thank you for doing this.
Thank for making these videos my grandma just got really bad today she hasn't been doing well for a while but today was the worst I'm going to have to step up and be that person for her now and it's been a world change and a big eye opener anyways than you for making these videos and we love queens 👑 G much love and well wishes🤍
OH I'm so glad you are enjoying these type of videos!! So sorry to hear about your grandma. I sure hope by you stepping in to help her does the trick to her health! Hugs to you!
Thank you for your hard won advice. It all sounds correct. I did the very same thing for my mother. Some other things that worked really well for us was bedside commode, waterproof bed pads and chucks, diapers lined with one incontinence pad and lots of adult wet wipes. I used a baby diaper geni as a trash can with a regular kitchen bag for diapers and wipes emptied daily at bedtime. I loaded her pills in 7day week plastic pill containers. I learned as I went along. 😊👍
Thank you for sharing your journey. After treading water for the last year- now I’m learning how to plan and get organized so that I can take better care of me. Really appreciate you Dee. One of the things that I’ve really learned taking care of Mom and Dad is to write things down that I need to remember because ultimately something is going to get forgotten and having notes helps so much.
Such a smart girl....so very proud of you.....you tell it all, exactly how it has to be...simply, one day at a time with a schedule for appointments ahead so that you are well prepared for travel, etc.........making time for other family members is even more important as we, as caregivers, need their love and support......xoxoxoxoxo
Excellent tips. I should have followed the rest when they rest tip. I was suffering from exhaustion. I was so sleep deprived I almost collapsed in the grocery store one day.
Oh my goodness, exhaustion really plays a horrible factor. It was difficult to get any sleep in the beginning, but man I wish I slept when I had opportunities just watching my mom sleep lol.
I saw u on sierra's RUclips channel the native gala. Thanks for the tips on being a caregiver. I started taking care of my mom. Your tips really help👍😊
I'm so glad you found my channel. I'm always talking or sharing about caregiving all the time! Good luck on being a caregiver to your mom. I'm here for ya!
I have a tip: do what you can and leave the rest for another day. Be happy for the things you have accomplished, not upset at the things you left undone. You can only do so much.
One tip I’d like to add to this is keep a journal. Keeping a journal, written or digital, helps a great deal with the stresses and surprises that come with caregiving. It has been a life saver for me. Whether you have someone to talk to or not, it just feels really good to have a separate personal and private space set up specifically for yourself. It’s like a having safe space where you can internally work out or work through whatever day to day issues you feel you need to focus on as needed. It clears the mind and makes focusing easier, and most importantly keeps the stress levels and temperament in check. Patience and understanding are huge assets in caregiving and journaling helps with that. Well for me at least it has.
Dan, that is such a GREAT additional tip for sure!!! Thank you for sharing that! I too keep a journal 😉, but haven’t wrote in it since 2020. I need to get back to journaling my caregiving💕
Thank you for sharing this with us. Sadly my mom passed away at the beginning of the month so now I'm a caregiver to my grandma only. I miss my mom but now time to refocus on caring for grandma.
Thanks Dee! I been a subscriber for a while don’t know if you remember me. It’s Adri from San Francisco. 4 weeks tomorrow my mom had a brain aneurism then a stroke. She’s still in the hospital but out of ICU. We just started looking into long term living and skilled nursing homes but the goal is to hopefully have her come live with me. I do have two small children ages 6 & 4 so hopefully we can make his work for everyone. I know my mom wouldn’t want to live in a skilled nursing home. Anyhow thanks for this video will be checking out your playlist.
Hi Adri!!! I remember you! Oh my, I"m so sorry to hear about your mom. I'm glad she's out of ICU, and hopefully onto recovery! That sounds like a great plan about skilled nursing home, then hopefully to your home when she's stronger. Take advantage of learning all the techniques and tricks from those caretakers! I learned from so many as I was with my mom throughout hospitals, rehab, and nursing home. Hugs to you and let me know how things go. Remember, to take care of yourself too! hugs!
Deelovelylife oh yeah been going everyday while the kids are in school. Learned so much already. Your videos give me hope. I understand it’s a long road to recovery. She is a fighter so we are fighting right by her side. Thank you for sharing.
I'm having a really hard time. I'm trying really hard and I'm so emotionally drained but I'm determined not to give up but I'm burnt out. Definitely overwhelmed. I can't stop crying. I can't sleep.
That’s ok. We all get those days like these. Take a time out for yourself. Journal your thoughts, or find a way to escape to your own happiness for a moment. Remember to take one day at a time, sometimes hour by hour. Not to over think, assume the worse, etc.
As a caregiver i love your videos. For my tip it would be to check with their insurance for any transportation services they may provide. You can also in some cases sign up for gas reimbursement. Also always check to see if they can get medical supplies needed that the insurance will pay for.
I was a caregiver before, but had a mental breakdown 5-6 years ago. Now I'm trying to get back into it. How do I not get stressed out by all the expectations and rules to follow? Can you talk about this? Thanks so much! I appreciate what you say about don't worry about the what ifs, and stay in the present!
If I had any tips it would be to remember in the early days that neither of you wants to be in this position with each other. One doesn't want to be dependent on you and the other may be overwhelmed by you being so. There is no shame in help and adds a breath of fresh air for both of you. Try to be inventive, a sassy straw and cup with a funny message on it or a favorite animal pic is just better on the eye for both of you. Always treat the survivor as you would want to be treated, respect their bad days and frustrations and celebrate every moment they gain in their progress to recovery. Sleep is key to both of you. If they are able to interact with you in a different room in the home, even just to watch the rain from a different window for five minutes, it helps you both with cabin fever. A few moments visit from friends and family is a great reminder that they are loved by everyone. There is no shame in reminding them by phone how much you would both love to catch up again. People don't mean to not visit, they sometimes just don't want to impose on your routine. There is also that feeling that they wish they were able to do more to help. Just let them know that a short visit would brighten everyone's day. You are a winning team, Queen G, Dee, Jay and Kitty, and so are your family and friends. Sending love to you all xx
Do you have a wet room Dee. I found the wet room changed our lives . No more sponge baths . Some great tips Dee. Well done . You are such a loving daughter. Love from Margaret
@@DeeLovelyLife you are doing such a marvellous job Dee. I know exactly what it means to be a carer of a stroke survivor. EXACTLY!! I had always written in my notes of all discussions, calls, questions, etc. I keep it in her emergency medical binder.
Today my husband comes home from nursing home . He is recovering from a stroke. Your videos are just what I need. Thanks.
I’m so glad you found my channel! Good luck with his homecoming! Take it one day at a time, it takes total trial and error at the beginning.
