    I'm 69 years old...married 50. We've built seven houses/cabins. When it comes to counter tops I've learned a few things. You asked if wood would work. Most woods require upkeep. I prefer granite or quartz. This is THE counters in the U.S. I put hot pots on my granite countertops, and chop on top of them. Quartz is about the same. Popular right now is porcelain countertops. They weren't available for our last build. I'm not sure what you have available to you, but wood is questionable. You are my favorite chateau vlog.

    If you use wood as a work surface, try the butcher block technique of upended wood blocks, easier to scrape away any damage as they did with butcher blocks. There are some woods that are more food friendly like maple. You could also encastre a slab of marble into the worktop for pastry making. Maybe bind the worksurface with brass like a bistro and don't forget to round of the corners unless you want blue hips. Put a brass towel rail in two places. Just an idea xxx

    For 30 years I have had an 11 foot by 5 foot butcher block wooden island in my kitchen. There is a 15 inch circular sink for vegetable preparation and a 7 inch hole opposite the sink that drops down to a trash container (there is a different place for recycling). There is a separate area in the kitchen for cleanup - a large sink and a dishwasher on either side of that sink. It has worked wonderfully. Approximately every 10 years we give it a light sanding and rub with mineral oil. It is low maintenance and we have had no problems with the wood and water. I based my kitchen layout on the kitchen at the Brighton Pavilion. It has worked wonderfully for just my husband and I or for large groups and caterers. Love your program!!!!

    I absolutely LOVE the new kitchen! I would suggest a quartz countertop, in a marble look, on the island! If possible, with a carved edge, like you see on antique furniture with marble tops, so it really looks like an old piece of marble. It is great for baking and cooking, easy to maintain, and it would keep the space light. And I would suggest a white and blue, perhaps a duck egg blue!! 😍

    My kitchen island has a wooden top made from teak planks. We just lightly sand and oil it every two years with food grade wood oil and 8 years down it is still good. The one thing I am very strict about is not cutting directly on the surface so we always use chopping boards and trivets for hot pots. I also don’t really use any harsh cleaning products - only wipe it with a damp microfiber cloth. Never regretted changing the original granite top for wood.

    that chipper made light worker of those branches!! It's fun to watch the time-lapse. I am glad that you and Anna have "decided" to go with a more country "chateau" look for the kitchen. Now colour....my vote is for a blue-grey theme, some darker grey to a lighter blue but with the same base. I've seen it done and it looks fabulous. If I get the chance, is how I am going to colour my kitchen. Anna's Dad is like the Energiser Bunny!!! He goes and goes!!

  • @MsLinda165
    @MsLinda165 2 года назад +29

    Marble is porous, so if red wine spills, I'm not sure you'd like it. There's gotta be another stone for pies that isn't marble, like quartz, which doesn't require sealing, and is heat scratch and stain resistant...and if you have enough cherry from your fallen trees, maybe use that for the butcher block, adding strips of other woods if not enough., like bamboo, or red oak, walnut, which you may have an abundance of on your property.

    • @ada9983
      @ada9983 2 года назад +7

      Hi, nice ideas but just want to clarify one thing.There’s a difference between quartz and quartzite. Quartz is a man-made material and it uses resin to bind chips of quartz and marble.The quartz is not heat resistant. The quartz top does get damaged if you put a hot pot on it due to the resin in it.Quartzite does not, as it is a natural material. It is a little expensive but it’s really beautiful. And it’s also good with stains. I prefer it over the man-made quartz. There is also a newish material that’s becoming popular that I just used on a residential project. ( I am an interior designer) It is porcelain slabs. Dekton Is one of the manufactures. The head company is Constantino and you can look on the website there.This company is in Europe and in the US. There are other manufacturers also such as Neolith. The material is absolutely beautiful, comes in a range of patterns and colors and because it’s porcelain, it is impervious to heat, stains, scratches, and can be placed outdoors where quartz cannot(due to the sun turning the resin yellow sometimes) Hope this helps!

    You asked about worktops and recommendations. If you want wood, I have wooden worktops. Get a hardwood, I bought solid oak from IKEA, they were thick and of excellent quality, they come untreated. If you want an extra thick look double it up and clamp and glue them together. They are not as thick as the original ones I fitted in my beach house in the UK. I use Osmo oil, they do many wood products and are excellent. Osmo worktop oil is quick to use and re coating is simple.... There wood stain is very good for window shutters!! If you want hard warring get granite, or quartz... Don't use marble as it is porous and a pain to look after... Keep up the good work!

    Love the kitchen restoration/adaptation ideas! For the island countertop, I think if you install a sink there, a stone counter might be the better choice. You can always place an extra large cutting board on top of the stone surface (for the chopping of vegetables, etc). Little injections of wood, plus the kitchen table, plus those gorgeous copper pots and pans will give you all the warmth the room needs. Just my two cents. :)

    Love the plan to keep the kitchen in the style of a chateau. I’m sure wood was a standard back in the day. However, I have had a real oak center island hand crafted by an old-school woodworker. It was absolutely beautiful but a royal pain to maintain. I am a relatively neat, non destructive person. I could not be careful enough to maintain the butcher block. Finally about 5 years ago I changed it to LG quartz that looks like Carrara marble. It is beautiful and a dream to use. Used a double thickness with combination of 2 edges stacked. Looks old world with none of the trouble.

    Add some rice to a sock and tie the top. Put it in the microwave for maybe 30 seconds, depends on your microwave. Check to see, it should be heated. Then put it on your dads back. Poor chap. If you want to be fancy, sprinkle some spice in, cinnamon or lavender. I sew packs for gifts, I make strips like short scarves and baffle them so the rice does not shift to one end. They work great and drape beautifully over shoulders, legs, etc., they can be made with lovely fabrics and sold if you have a gift shop or include them in your rooms in cooler months.

    I'm no Health and Safety officianado but I get quite concerned when I see so many 'chateau' folk not taking even basic sensible precautions when doing major DIY work. That being the case, it was so good to see your dad, and Philip, wearing appropriate safety clothing and equipment. What a worker your dad is! Sounded like he needed a good old soak in a Radox bath to ease his back after all his hard efforts.
    The kitchen ideas sound much more in keeping with the original chateau style, but allowing for modern conveniences. Your final choice of colour will be interesting, but I think you are right to avoid orange. :-)
    It will be interesting to see the full results once it is completed.

    Love the humour! I wouldn't put the washing up sink under overhead cabinets, I think it is nice to have the sink so you can look out at the room or looking out the windows.

    I would avoid using marble- it is pouris & stains easily. Is use another stone as well as some butcher block . It is nice to have both types of surfaces in a kitchen. So glad you are keeping the spirit of the old cabinet doors.
    Your parents are amazing & generous with their efforts to help.

    Thank heaven for helping parents it means the world! Love the traditional kitchen plans it will be lovely and timeless. Please consider a second dishwasher, maybe one a high speed commercial under counter for dishes, glasses and cutlery. As the world opens up people will flock in droves to stay and meet with you. Initial financial output maybe higher than a normal one but it saves so much time! Thanks for the tip on Skillshare. I want to hone my drawing skills. Over the years I had several courses which were very frustrating. The instructors were either teaching too simplistic minding more about their income from less talented people which was frustrating, or condescending which was crushing. Good luck with all! Ich wünsche Euch eine schöne, besinnliche Adventszeit 🎄

    In your busy season, you will be cooking for many people, it might save you a little time to put a small sink directly beside the stovetop to strain out all the pots you will inevitably be cooking which would allow your central island for plating meals. And if you install a pot-filler tap on the wall above the cooktop you can fill them without having to lift large, heavy pots across walking spaces... which will save your back.

    Anna your parents are amazing. Their work ethic is brilliant. Phillip is funny as usual. For the kitchen bamboo or maple are good choices. Quartz is a good countertop that’s easy to clean and maintain. Keeping as much of the original features is a great idea. Can’t wait to see it finished. Thanks for sharing.😍😘

    Lovely to see you all, as always but now I'm officially worried about Anna's dad's back. I've never heard him complain before, and even before he did, [at some point after the speeded-up video of him chopping a LOT of wood] I was thinking, 'ouch, that looks like a LOT of repetitive bending and lifting'. Hope his back is OK.

    I love Anna’s mom and dad! Such great people. You are so fortunate to have an amazing family. Philipp, I know you love your wood chipper but don’t show your little girl how to turn it on, gives me a heart attack!! I know you were kidding around and my goodness she is just the cutest child. The sound affect when Anna stopped the car with the trailer was hilarious! Love your humor. The kitchen is going to be awesome. Another great vlog! 💕

    The best advice I got when I was renovating an old apartment with historic features - you don't have to keep everything just because it's old and original to the apartment. Not everyone back then had a great taste and a good idea how to plan a house for it to be functional. It's the same now, I bet you've seen some grand modern kitchens/rooms that are just impractical, same as it was years ago:) Do what feels right, ask yourself - if I could plan it all, ignoring what is already here, what would I do - and then do it :) Future generations will thank you for it.
