What a great interview!! I’ve always really appreciated your love of this band that gave us the soundtrack of our lives!! Be well, my friend and God bless… from Texas!! #🟦
From a Gary to Geddy your one of the most talented musician of all time! No one touches your talent on bass, keyboards, and singing! You are the definition of Unique and RUSH is not RUSH without your playing and vocals! To quote the movie: I LOVE YOU MAN! Alex and Neil as well!! This is my essay to people who may not know RUSH or who Neil was professionally and his contributions to the art of drumming and lyrical writing! Enjoy! RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary
This was an excellent interview. Listening to this I see some similarities in my own life like losing a parent at a young age. You can see how Neil's passing still effects him. Had my eyes watering a bit too. It is so true, you can't stay in the past. You can lose your present if you do.
The passing of Neil Peart and Gord Downie effected me more than other musicians I know... I grew up with both bands (both favorites and both lyricists I respect the most... poetry set to brilliant music). I can feel the brothership and love in this interview for Neil from Ged, I get choked up thinking of all the inspiration i've gotten from them over the years.
It's funny, that 'guess the concert' section, because (at first) I immediately guessed Scotland, too (though it soon became apparent it was slightly different). Rush fans, certainly of the time, know it so well because it's the version of 'Closer to the Heart' featured on the 'Exit Stage Left' album. I recall Geddy saying at the time, "We used that version, because the Glaswegians sing so nice!". I've already seen this excellent interview, but I just thought I'd see your reaction to it. Personally, I found parts extremely moving. I'm not ashamed admitting to a tear or two, as well as the smiles.
I love the story when Neil was getting ready to get on his set , he had his ear set on he was focusing on getting ready to play when he walked past Charlie Watts not noticing him , Geddy pointed to Neil that’s Charlie N I’ll figured it out and took the head sets off , Charlie was one of his great influences
Just as Geddy is suggesting - that if his father not died, his life would have been different because his dad would have been a strict authoritarian presence - we start hearing Rory providing a strict authoritarian presence for Nala. Rory, go easy - or your puppy will never become a legendary rock star!
There is no "Best" in the NP vs. JB argument... and I'm sure JB knew who NP was, because Jimmy Page was very impressed with Rush's 2112 release calling them the best new group he'd heard up to that point. Both are great in their own right. And I was a fan of JB in 1970 at the age of 9, way before I'd heard of NP. I'm Just as much a fan of Zep, as I am of Rush... RIP Bonzo - RIP Pratt...
@markworth7167 not really considering that other than The BBBook of Bass, which was pre pandemic times, we really haven’t seen or heard much from him for 8 years. 🤔remember 2015? Now it’s almost 2024, so he’s making up for close to 9 years absence in the public eye. Not to much EVER. How about Alex playing with Tool the other night? That’s what I’m talking about ❤🤘🖖✌️🎸🎸🎹🎤

What a man. Somebody who has accomplished so much…yet so humble. Gotta love him! RIP Neil

Apparently he drops as many f-bombs as you do in normal parlance, Rory!
