Followed these instructions for my 2016. It took about 4 hours. Only differences were that the 15mm bolt on the pump was 17mm. Also, the radiator has a built in bleeder valve below the air intake hose that you must use, though it actually makes it very easy to bleed the system.

I'd like to make sure I got the one that you got if possible.
Thank you for the comment. I truly appreciate it!!! Unfortunately, the leaking is just a design flaw in these pumps in general. This new one from Advance (last one done in the video) is now leaking too 🥲. Literally almost every one of these I’ve ever been under the hood of is leaking. I detail for a living so i actually get a chance to see these frequently. Not sure on the part number though, oddly the box was blank, and the customer actually purchased the pump themselves and brought it to me. All he told me was it was ordered from Advance.
Appreciate the torque sequence diagram and torque specs. There is also a bleed screw on the top of the thermostat housing if you can't get that final burp in the system. Most water pump manufacturers recommend spinning the pump by hand with coolant in the system to just get the pump itself lubricated, but most folks seem to skip that. Thanks for the thorough video.
Yes I agree, that you are doing a wonderful job and I really appreciate this video because I'm literally getting ready to change the water pump on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Thank you.....Great Jobb
Awesome video watching it a ton to do this on my 2017 Jeep grand Cherokee 3.6L Do you have a vid for changing the thermastat as well? I figure while I’m in there I could just change that out as well
Appreciate it! But no I don’t unfortunately, in my opinion it’s something I would probably leave alone unless defective, I’m a believer in if it aint broke, don’t fix it most of the time.
BeeCee thanks kindly for sharing this video and your attention to detail. Made this job so much easier for first time tinkering with this on a 3.6. Much appreciated!!
Good afternoon, excellent video. I just changed mine in a 2016 Grand Cherokee, after 2 days I notice that it is leaking again. Not if it is due to the gasket that the area was not clean enough (I don't think so but there is a possibility) or that I put a torque of 8lb.ft on all the screws. as I saw in other pages. The day I did the job there were no leaks, I had it on for an hour and then I went out in it for a couple of hours and everything was ok. Today I realize that it smells like refrigerant and I check and it's leaking. I am going to retighten the screws with the torque that you put to see if it is solved. or in the worst case I will do all the work again to change the gasket. If it's not too much trouble, what scotch product did you use to clean the area? Thanks
31:33 …..red scotch bright pad. Like above comment mentioned, 7447, you can utilize that. Not sure why you put 8ft. Lbs on all the bolts though, the lowest rating is 9ft lbs on the 10mm’s, and the bigger bolts have higher torque values. All outlined in the video…..right from the FSM. But ensure its leaking from the actual gasket, not the common leak point on the pump. But if you torqued every bolt to 8ft lbs, I imagine it could be leaking from gasket.
@@TheOriginalBeeCee Yes, before I watched this video, I searched the internet for the torque and there are a couple of Jeep pages and forums that indicate that value (8). I checked again and it seems that the pump is defective and leaks behind the pulley. Yesterday I cleaned the entire area and the periphery of the pump all looks dry. After a few minutes of operation stat leak in the area of the pulley and it is what wets the bolt below. (I'm already waiting for a replacement from the seller) Thanks
@@fmha1987 got yaa. Good luck with the replacement, I honestly don’t think any of these water pumps no matter the brand are going to not leak unfortunately. The design flaw is the same throughout with that stupid ass freeze plug under the pulley that leaks.
We are on our 4th water pump from the same jeep dealer. Each time it leaks from the same place as this video after about 4-5000 miles. First one started leaking at 75,000 miles. All covered under unlimited / 7 year warranty maxcare. The question is why does it keep leaking down the same weep hole?
Sorry to hear. Definitely a common issue with these. The pump on this Jeep in the video is now leaking again too. Twice really. Upon digging into this a bit deeper, I don’t believe it’s the “weep hole”. It’s actually like a small “freeze plug” that leaks on these pumps. If you look through the pulley at the opposite side of the aluminum freeze plug that leaks, you will see the weep hole. This “freeze plug” that leaks serves no purpose as far as I see it. It’s just like they slapped this plug in the front of the pump… and it leaks when it gets hot. The second one installed in the video began to leak, as mentioned. So i figured something had to give, obviously. So…I still had the Gates one that was initially installed sitting in my garage. I cleaned the Gates pump up & attempted a fix on it. I RTV’d the plug, tried to get it the best i could thru the small hole in the pulley. Installed it again (3rd install now) and…. it’s leaking again. So despite my best attempts, the fix didn’t work and it’s leaking worse than ever. so overall its a design defect on these pumps, and there is no fix….unless they do a pump redesign without this freeze plug in it. that would be the fix. New pump with no hole/plug. Now…If someone could sneak in there and potentially weld the edges of the plug to the pump might be a potential fix as well…..but that wouldn’t be an easy task. The real fix is a redesign needs to be available for replacement. As for the Jeep in the video…the initial Gates pump leaked as shown in the video, then the replacement outlined in the video leaked…then I reinstalled the Gates after my re-sealing attempt on the plug, and its leaking as of now. So currently just monitoring the coolant and topping of when needed ensuring fluid level is correct.
GATES pumps should take you out for a steak dinner!! Thanks for the complete video. I feel confident to do my wife's 2014, Jeep Grand Cherokee water pump replacement now. Do you think I should replace the original serpentine belt based on the age while I'm at it?
Hahaha…appreciate the comment! Unfortunately I don’t think it was the Gates pump, its just a design flaw in these pumps in general. This new one (last one done in the video) is now leaking too 🥲. Literally almost every one of these I’ve ever been under the hood of is leaking. I detail for a living so i actually get a chance to see these frequently. As far as the belt, if its showing signs of age and/or like 120K+, it would be a good time to do it since it will already be off. I would suggest a Gates belt! Lol
You don’t have too. Its not like you are taking it out while doing the pump like some other vehicles either. I usually believe in if it aint broke dont fix it, I personally didnt do it on this job.
Yea you can, you could really flush whatever you wanted. I was referring to flushing the coolant reservoir out in the video, as a lot of times they get corroded.
How is that new pump holding up??? I had mine replaced at the dealer when I had work done under warranty. Original pump lasted 50k (only leaking from weep hole). I am 65k now and the new pump is leaking from the weep hole again, ugh!
Didn’t hold up at all. Leaked from the freeze plug/weep hole again, just like alll the others. I gave it one more attempt after this, I tried to rectify the issue and address it head on. I cleaned up the Gates pump and tried to RTV the dime sized freeze plug, but it didn’t work unfortunately. Actually just did an oil change on it today and its leaking worst than ever. And it doesn’t seem like replacing it, again, is going to solve anything. Its just a design flaw, you can see its a constant issue from some other comments as well. They need a new redesign desperately
Wow, that’s so unfortunate! Whats the next move just let it leak? My 2019 had whole new long block and everything put in it at 50k and the original water pump was leaking at that time as well. I’m now 65k and I noticed a faint coolant smell again and the weep hole has coolant present and I can see very small dried residue on 2 bolts near the pulley, nothing enough to run down and see anything on the ground. Going to have it done again under the warranty on the repair, but not sure what my options are if it happens again so early. Keep having them doing it under the repair warranty Chrysler offers? Not sure.
You can keep having them do it, although i doubt its going to change anything. Its just going to leak again. They all leak. I detail, and I see these frequently, and since I’ve done this….ill always check to see if they are leaking. Last like 9 out of 10 were leaking. One i just saw was leaking at like 40k. Only one that wasn’t, or looked like it wasn’t…had 30k. Like i said, they need a redesign. I don’t think replacing them is really going to fix it. Just a 5-10k mile fix at the most. Just curious....I'm looking for a pump for my girlfriend's 2017 Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6L.....I see a butt load of pumps that all look identical but I get notes that say the pump won't fit my jeep on most of them. What is the difference in the pumps?
I’m not 100 percent on what the differences are. This is a 2017 and I got the Gates pump off of Rockauto. They have other brands was well including the OE Mopar: www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/jeep,2017,grand+cherokee,3.6l+v6,3435257,cooling+system,water+pump,2208 Idk what brand i would go with honestly….Seems they all are prone to failing due to the design, even the OE considering the original on all these fails very early.
oh ok, thanks anyways. i decided on Mopar. figured with all the work involved I'd have better luck not doing it twice with oem. we'll see 🤷🏻♂️.that's a bummer tho!
I wish you the best of luck! Personally I don’t have the most faith in OEM either, being its their flawed design, and mostly all OE originals seem to leak after 30K. The ones they are selling at dealer part counters are the same ones installed on this vehicles from factory. Would be nice to see them come out with a re-design or something new that notes resolving this particular issue indefinitely. But hope it lasts for you man, let me know how the job goes 👍
I have a 2016 Jeep Grand cherokee just hit 100,000 miles. I noticed a burnt coolant smell after driving over the pass 100 miles and when i opened the hood, i noticed under the water pump that there was little coolant leakage. Nothing running out or on ground. Is it safe to drive back home? Could this be water pump or just the gasket?
As long as you aren’t over-heating, and your coolant reserviour stays topped off you can drive on it. Usually these slow leak from the pump themselves as outlined in the video. Usually a slow manageable leak, but leak nonetheless.
@@Yvettebeautymakeup0x0x just keep an eye on that reserviour. As long as you have coolant in there you’ll be perfectly fine. I doubt its a large leak so im sure it’s manageable
Really hard to say without experiencing the issue or hearing/seeing the vehicle. From my experience water pumps that mechanically fail typically don’t make a “whine” noise though, more of a scratchy/bad bearing sound and/or belt squeal. These pumps are known for leaking issues, I can’t say I’ve heard of one making noise. Probably cause they leak so early they don’t make it to the mileage where the bearing could go bad and actually makes noise lol. One way you can help eliminate a belt drive noise is remove the belt, and spin each pulley individually manually with your hand…and see if you get any noise out of any of them. Most of the time, if a pulley is bad you can hear it by spinning it and checking it this way.
I actually still have the box from the second pump and it’s literally blank. No part number, no nothing. I didn’t get it personally, the customer purchased it and brought it to me. Said he got it from Advanced. But i would say maybe just get one from rockauto. They got options and best pricing.
Yeaaa man these things definitely are prone to coolant system issues. There are known coolant system issues with these, and i think these pumps continuously failing is part of it.
Same here. Changed the pump on my wife's 2018 GC 9 weeks ago @53k miles with mopar pump and now leaking again out the weep hole. This will be 1st and last mopar I own. Several defects on this1 and bought it brand new with dealer servicing it
@@dazellrankin6710 its not “ruined”, but of course leaking is never good or ideal. It seems most people just chop it up and deal with it. It seems no matter the brand, it just inevitably fails and leaks from the hole again. You can keep replacing them until you might get lucky and not have a leaky weep hole….or I would suggest monitoring the leak and coolant level regularly, and if its just a slow drip and nothing serious I would maybe just leave it.
Anything is possible really when it comes to vehicles. Water pump bearings can fail, and cause unpleasant sounds from the pulley while running. Easiest way to find out would be to remove the belt….then spin the water pump pulley manually with your hand to see if you get any sounds and/or if there is any play in the pulley.
If yours is doing the same thing, its the pumps actual weep hole that is failing, not the gasket. So just replacing the gasket won’t fix anything. Now if just the gasket was leaking you could do that, but its the pumps that fail on these from the weep holes, so if yours is leaking then its most likely the pump.
More of a man than me in that if I would have installed the pump like you did and it failed, this Jeep would be needing a new windshield due to a hammer going through it! Then, I would have demanded someone from Gates get their arse over there to replace with another pump until it worked! Great video though!!
Lol I appreciate it! And i hear ya man, it just seems like these WP’s were designed to fail. Its almost like it’s a freeze plug pressed into them and somehow coolant just finds its way out. I have a detailing business and since I did this job, I’ve done 5 3.6L WK2’s and I started checking them. 4 out of the 5 were leaking the exact same way, the only one that wasn’t had really low miles. So I’m not completely going to blame Gates lol, I just think it stems from a poor design.
They are all crap. Its a design flaw. You can replace it 1000 times and it’s eventually still going to leak from the stupid damn front freeze plug. Im currently test trialing a permanent fix. Ill know in the next couple months.
Have you been told by the dealer that the water pump has been redesigned? I have a buddy who bought a new water pump at the dealer and the postion where the pulley sits is moved 3 inches to the right. Now there is 1 extra bolt as the pulley bolt is too long for the new location and and the original location as they also reduced the thinckiness of the mating surface of the original pulley location. So it would need 2 new bolts to adjust for the move of the location. Dealer is no help what so ever because those guys only look at the computer and repeat what it says and can't answer a question.
@@TheOriginalBeeCeeThey ending up having the wrong part in the box. They had the Pacifica water pump inside the box for what was supposed to leave it Grand Cherokee water pump. Even though both are the same 3.6 engine. They Pacifica is front wheel drive, hence why the pulley is in a different location on the water pump. In order to make sure the bolt does not hit the frame rail when removing. I had to call another dealer, to verify the information, and they told me that the dealer that sold the original part was wrong. They confirmed it was redesigned, but the appearance has not changed one bit so it must have been a change on the bearings off the water pump.

I can't say enough about it actually. perfect camera work, perfect dialog including all necessary information. to think that you had to do this twice and you didn't skip a beat. thank you and I applaud you. need to tackle this this weekend and you just took the stress right out of it (other than hoping that the new part doesn't leak like it did to you). would gladly subscribe.👏🏼👏🏼.. one question if you could answer.. what was the part number for the pump you got from Advance.
God bless Sr. I’m never enjoy a video like yours in this platform thank you so much
Appreciate it so much! Thank you
Appreciate the torque sequence diagram and torque specs. There is also a bleed screw on the top of the thermostat housing if you can't get that final burp in the system. Most water pump manufacturers recommend spinning the pump by hand with coolant in the system to just get the pump itself lubricated, but most folks seem to skip that. Thanks for the thorough video.
True indeed! Appreciate the comment 👍
not all have the bleeder
Thought about doing this myself but after watching this I’d be in over my head. Awesome video though thank you
Awesome video. I dig your positive outlook too. Thanks so much

Yes I agree, that you are doing a wonderful job and I really appreciate this video because I'm literally getting ready to change the water pump on my Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Appreciate the comment man! 🙏🙏🙏
Awesome video watching it a ton to do this on my 2017 Jeep grand Cherokee 3.6L
Do you have a vid for changing the thermastat as well? I figure while I’m in there I could just change that out as well
Appreciate it! But no I don’t unfortunately, in my opinion it’s something I would probably leave alone unless defective, I’m a believer in if it aint broke, don’t fix it most of the time.
Thank you for the video! Have the exact jeep and this video was super helpful so just wanted to say thanks for making such a great video!

Very thorough! Great job. Did my 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited. Thanks a lot Bud!👍🏻👍🏻
Appreciate the comment 🙏
BeeCee thanks kindly for sharing this video and your attention to detail. Made this job so much easier for first time tinkering with this on a 3.6. Much appreciated!!
Thanks for the comment, im glad it helped!
Thanks
Scotch Brite 7447 is what it looks like
31:33 …..red scotch bright pad.
@@lustedp thanks, that's what I was looking for, the sponge model
@@TheOriginalBeeCee Yes, before I watched this video, I searched the internet for the torque and there are a couple of Jeep pages and forums that indicate that value (8). I checked again and it seems that the pump is defective and leaks behind the pulley. Yesterday I cleaned the entire area and the periphery of the pump all looks dry. After a few minutes of operation stat leak in the area of the pulley and it is what wets the bolt below. (I'm already waiting for a replacement from the seller)
Thanks
@@fmha1987 got yaa. Good luck with the replacement, I honestly don’t think any of these water pumps no matter the brand are going to not leak unfortunately. The design flaw is the same throughout with that stupid ass freeze plug under the pulley that leaks.
Clear and concise. Fantastic job and production value. New sub.
Thank you so much I truly appreciate it! 🙏🙏🙏

Great work. You know your know. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for the comment! Definitely appreciate it!
Wow! Thank you so much! This video you made saved my ass, brutha! Seriously, I truly appreciate it.
Awesome man, glad it helped! 🙏🙏
Lol
Do you think I should do the Thermostat while I do the waterpump?
You don’t have too. Its not like you are taking it out while doing the pump like some other vehicles either. I usually believe in if it aint broke dont fix it, I personally didnt do it on this job.
Long video, but this is how supposed to be, thank you.
🙏🙏🙏
So can you do a flush without the water pump? Before installing new one??
Yea you can, you could really flush whatever you wanted. I was referring to flushing the coolant reservoir out in the video, as a lot of times they get corroded.
Appreciate the video. Got my though my replacement easy!!
Im glad man appreciate the comment 🙏🙏
Shouldnt have to change the water pump every oil change interval.
I was just letting this leak and topping it off every oil change. Honestly, its the only thing you can really do in my opinion. this is a friend of mine’s vehicle, i told him he should consider offing it. this is a real flaw that has no real resolution.
There are 5 rubber grommets total. The top M6 one is the additional.
They have other brands was well including the OE Mopar:
www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/jeep,2017,grand+cherokee,3.6l+v6,3435257,cooling+system,water+pump,2208
Idk what brand i would go with honestly….Seems they all are prone to failing due to the design, even the OE considering the original on all these fails very early.
oh ok, thanks anyways. i decided on Mopar. figured with all the work involved I'd have better luck not doing it twice with oem. we'll see 🤷🏻♂️.that's a bummer tho!
But hope it lasts for you man, let me know how the job goes 👍
crazy, my Advance does not have any water pumps for the 2017 G.C...had to go to Oreilly
Yea idk it’s weird I didn’t see it either. I didnt purchase the second pump, but the owner told me advance ordered it, so idk 🤷♂️
Beautiful job sir! Excellent
Thank you! I appreciate it!
@BeeCee Built thank you so much. Im nervous to drive it back home.
@@Yvettebeautymakeup0x0x just keep an eye on that reserviour. As long as you have coolant in there you’ll be perfectly fine. I doubt its a large leak so im sure it’s manageable
Put a piece of poly tubing on the drain and you won't get wet.
…that is, if you have some…or not to cheap & lazy to go get some lol
Amazing work and video , grateful here...
Thank you! Grateful for your comment & view 🙏
I recently started hearing whine noises when I accelerate 80 70 wk,2019 34k miles, could it be water pump,? Haven't seen any leakage
What part number did you use? Advanced is not showing for the 17. Can I use the 2015?
I actually still have the box from the second pump and it’s literally blank. No part number, no nothing. I didn’t get it personally, the customer purchased it and brought it to me. Said he got it from Advanced. But i would say maybe just get one from rockauto. They got options and best pricing.
Very helpful video, thank you!

Ya these pumps kind of suck. I replaced the one on my gf’s GC like 3-4 weeks ago (with mopar) and I just noticed it’s leaking through the weep hole 😑
Several defects on this1 and bought it brand new with dealer servicing it
@@TheOriginalBeeCee if it leaks out the weep hole is it ruined? we replaced ours and it leaks a little
@@jamiebordelon6365 smh ridiculous
@@dazellrankin6710 its not “ruined”, but of course leaking is never good or ideal. It seems most people just chop it up and deal with it. It seems no matter the brand, it just inevitably fails and leaks from the hole again. You can keep replacing them until you might get lucky and not have a leaky weep hole….or I would suggest monitoring the leak and coolant level regularly, and if its just a slow drip and nothing serious I would maybe just leave it.
Good job in this video. Thank you buddy....
Thank you for the comment 🙏🙏
Could that be the reason why the exact same model is making a squeaky, scratchy sound?
Anything is possible really when it comes to vehicles. Water pump bearings can fail, and cause unpleasant sounds from the pulley while running. Easiest way to find out would be to remove the belt….then spin the water pump pulley manually with your hand to see if you get any sounds and/or if there is any play in the pulley.
I miss working on the 70's cars. less crap in the way.

excellent step by step..........
Appreciate it!!
It was still doing it that before I replaced the idler and the belt
Could you just replace gasket? Mine is doing the same.
@@TheOriginalBeeCee oh I see, ok I’ll just be safe and replace the whole pump. Thank you

@@TheOriginalBeeCee okay 👍
My replacement pump lasted 4 months. Way I live is only twenty plus square miles total and my jeep is not a every day driving vehicle

Update, I was given a water pump the Chrysler Pacifica uses. Same 3.6 engine, however the pulley is in a different position
@@xaviermedina5816 thanks for the insight. This is the first im hearing of anything like this. So just a pacifica WP is all thats needed?
