    Although I am very familiar with engine and rear end rebuilding, I had never tackled a transmission until about 10 years ago.My first trans rebuild was an automatic from an 86 Pontiac Grand Prix and I was scared spitless digging into it, totally afraid I'd screw it all up somehow. I was amazed at just how easy it actually was though and have since rebuilt a Borg-Warner T-5 from an 83 Pontiac Firebird as well. Your rebuild videos sure would have been a huge asset back then. Great stuff and keep it up...Liked and subbed.

    You can reinstall the top gears when the trans is mounted to the bell housing. Just push the syncro as far forward as you can, slide the 1st/reverse gear forward (to the neutral position), and if you curse just right, it will eventually slide in...

    Only one problem. You made a mistake on the rear output bearing. In the video you put it on backwards. You put the snap ring on the outside, but in real life it has to go on the inside closest to the transmission. The bearing seats into a cutout in the transfer case almost 3/4" and rests against a shoulder machined into the case itself so the snap-ring groove on the output shaft NEEDS to be closest to the transmission. Wish I had known the BEFORE I had it pressed on the shaft

    • @ShnitzlHaus
      @ShnitzlHaus  9 лет назад +1

      I will have to check this out, I dont see it as an issue the snap ring should be removed before you assemble the transmission to the transfercase. my stock bearings that I pressed off before rebuild did not have a snap ring groove.

    • @eric-8998
      @eric-8998 9 лет назад +2

      I've rebuilt several of these, and the orientation of the bearing is not critical. It is easier when the snap ring groove is oriented towards the transmission, as that leaves the filleted edge of the bearing facing rearward for easier transfer case indexing. Very well done, ShnitzlHaus.

  • @skydivecis
    @skydivecis 6 лет назад +1

    When installing the bearing on the main shaft you put a snap ring on the bearing. On the picture of the exploded view of the T90 there is NO snap ring mounted or listed. There was no snap ring mounted on my bearing when I disassembled my T90. I even think that the snap ring prevents a good assemblage of the T90 to the Dana 18 transfer case. ??? Otherwise, a good guide. Thanks.

    Hi there. Just completed my rebuild and this video was really helpful. (I couldn't view it using Mozilla as my browser but it worked fine on Explorer). The tricky bit is refitting the gearshaft. Also a bit puzzled that the rear bearing can drop out of alignment when the assembly is completed as the gearshaft can separate - but maybe this will be resolved when its refitted to the transfer box?

    • @ShnitzlHaus
      @ShnitzlHaus  9 лет назад +1

      GlynBryan exactly, once you get the transfer case bolted up it will keep all the T90 gears in place. :)

    Great video, complete and very informative. The one question I have is can I still retain my oil collector if I’ve upgraded to the later model year T90 cluster gear with the lower first and second gears? Third gear has 35 teeth on the cluster gear as opposed to 33 on the original cluster gear.

    • @randallstewart8487
      @randallstewart8487 2 года назад +1

      I know this is a year old question,but may help someone about this now,willys must have thought the oil slinger wasnt really necessary in the later T-90's,they deleted it,but it would be the rebuilders decision to put it back or leave it out,if you leave it out,dont forget to plug up the two bolt holes that retain it!

  • @battlejack1863

    You’ve got to remove that snap ring off the bearing that goes into the transfer case where the Pto gear slides on or it won’t seat properly

Can you share how you removed the bearing from the main shaft in the T90? I am going to have to buy the tool. I have a press.

    • @ShnitzlHaus
      @ShnitzlHaus  7 лет назад +1

      you can use a puller, press or drift punch. just be smart about it, don't mar any surfaces so use soft jaws if its held in a vice. if your pressing make sure everything is coming off straight. puller or press would be first choices.

  • @yffrules
    @yffrules 9 лет назад +1

    First I appreciate the effort in the video you did a great job. However, no one talks about how to remove the oil collector or the main drive gear. I know you did say this video was not going to show that and I noticed you did not install the oil collector. Did your T90 have the oil collector when you did the dis-assembly? If you have the oil collector its impossible to remove the main drive gear. I am sure there is a method to this (much like removing the flywheel from the 226 so you can get to the bolts on the bellhousing), if anyone has or knows the trick please let me know.
    I love my Willys but I have to question some of the Engineering :)

    • @ShnitzlHaus
      @ShnitzlHaus  9 лет назад

      +yffrules Thank you, to remove the oil collector you must essentially pull apart the transmission, funny but true its one of the last things to come out with the main drive gear. abbreviated (for a general idea), you get the main shaft with all the upper gears/synchros out, you then drive the lower cluster idler shaft out of the case - this allows the cluster to lay on the bottom of the transmission which then allows you to remove the main drive and oil slinger. the T90 is a puzzle but a relatively small one. my T90 had a oil collector but it was very rusted out so I opted not to use it, its a very debated topic. essentially the oil collector would help lubricate the upper bearings should you run low on transmission oil - either forget to check the level or because of the nature of the T90 and Dana 18 sharing oil on a steep incline the transfercase might take on more oil leaving the T90 with less then optimal fluid. to open up another can of worms you can run a full gasket mating the t90 and dana18 to stop the sharing of oil, just make sure you fill them individually! anyhow "Novak conversions" online has a great write up on how to disassemble and assemble the T90

    My 1971 Scout 800 B has a T90 transmission. I have a question for my little Devil Box.
    At 22:22 minutes , the video states to place 14) needle bearings that come with the kit. When I place these , there is not enough net area for one shaft to mate into the other..It seems I need 20)+ smaller diameter bearings. As well , these bearing need to be approximately 5/8" long in lieu of the 3/4" bearings provided in the Novak kit. Could someone advise what bearings I need to purchase and place into this monster? Another aggravating item , my cluster gear is reverse hatch direction from anything I can find available. Thanks for any help..! Great video !

    • @ShnitzlHaus
      @ShnitzlHaus  7 лет назад +1

      Hey Raybone, the T90 came in various models. I'm not fully educated on all of them but maybe you have one of the "T90C" or "T90J" I am fairly certain that would be your issue as I believe they all varied in gear ratios etc.

    • @ShnitzlHaus
      @ShnitzlHaus  7 лет назад +1

      memory is slipping, if the do not call for that in the parts list I would highly suggest a thread sealent on the threads and a light coat of non hardening sealer (or some gasket maker) on the base of the bolt head.
      since these threaded holes access the inside of the transmission you want to keep oil from seeping out.

    Most people here run from differential work.

    • @ShnitzlHaus
      @ShnitzlHaus  8 лет назад +2

      +Ken MacMillan Yes you are correct! maybe one day I will make a video of that.
      if one can do a transmission or transfer rebuild then one should be able to do a differential, most people just need to understand the proper order in which one would rebuild a diff and it helps to invest or make setup tools. the actual process of rebuilding is straight forward. a company that marks for pinion depth and the use of a pinion depth gauge makes things super easy, reading patterns I think scares allot of people away.

    help me please,i heve to rebuild it...almost all the gears are broken and shafts in bad conditions..

    • @OldCrowsClassicCars
      @OldCrowsClassicCars 5 лет назад

      I have the T96 with OD and a complete series about them. The R11 OD is indeed quite rare, but the only difference between the R11 and my R10 is the R11 has 4 planet gears instead of 3. And yes, I do believe the T85 is kinda rare, but Iv'e seen some T86s on ebay.
      I also believe the T85 and T86 are quite similar to the T96. So you might want to filter through some of my videos (there are alot of them unfortuantely) just in case there is some info that might be of help to you.
      As for parts, ebay has lots, and you could also try kaiserwillys.com and hermtheoverdriveguy.com. rockauto also has the needle bearings for under $10. They can also simply be cut from a suitable rod for even cheaper if you really wanted to.
      If the gears have some pitting and scratches, thats not going to interfere with driving. But if most of the gears are broken and seriously damaged, then I think it might not be worth it trying to find and replace so many expensive gears. The other option is buying another parts transmission.

    Thank you for your video. I have just taken apart my T 90 and I am cleaning it out. Any advice on the best place to get seals? I might also need secondary shaft.

    I will also be using this for reference when I take mine apart and know the steps I want to keep this in mind where you are are where you are and if you could send me your email and address and phone number that would be great cuz I'm good at everything and operating but I'm not much of a mechanic but I'm pretty good at maintenance
