As you said toward the end, I I do think a "stronger" candle might fair better that a birthday candle. Birthday candles are notoriously terrible in both wick and wax.

I'm a chemist, the reason the gallium candle put itself out in the beginning is because the chemical reaction involving the oxygen, wax, and flame is stopped because the gallium covers the wax. This put the wax out of contact with the flame. The wax is the fuel for the flame, so it quickly puts itself out.

i thought you revisited the video since it showed up when i had already watched. i was excited for the fully working gallium candle
If you don't mind the advice try looking at a chandlers shop for the thin tapers that are used to light lots of candles in fancy candelabras. They're about the same thickness as a cake candle but have a thicker wick and slightly longer burn time. I use them myself when making candles as gifts on occasions.

So the gallium was working as a heat sink, and cooling off the candle/wax so that the flame went out. That is cool.
