Awesome discussion. I purchased three identical wall mounted wood with glass door 7 shelf display cases, mounted them side by side by side in my living room and decided right there that once those three cases were full that was it, and I've stuck to it ever since. The three cases hold a total of 36 pocket knives and 18 Zippo lighters with 4 fixed blade knives wall mounted separately. Plus I have 4 EDC work knives that I don't keep in the cases. If I come across a knife or Zippo that I absolutely must have like when I recently found a Rike 1902 for sale, one of the 36 gets bumped out of the case to be sold or given as a gift.I do it this way because God only knows what I'd spend if I didn't. What an excellent video and explanation of the commonalities and differences between us. I think tools like knives are part of our DNA going back to flint knapping and obsidian for survival and hunting, to making everyday tasks easier. A case can be made for knives we intend to use and carry, as well as "drawer queens" that we can just appreciate. I have both and wouldn't have it any other way. Thanks, MC!
Went from budget all the way to custom in about 4 years. The fun now is the hunt! Trying to find and afford your favorite makers pieces is quite the challenge but so worth it!
Hey MC - Personally, I would say collecting things is self-expression, to appreciate something finely, to know its nuances, appreciate its attributes with a level of scrutiny and discernment that an uninformed person cannot. You totally have that for blades and I’m here for all of it! Your knowledge and passion totally come through your videos, and it’s infectious! Your rant on the CIVIVI Vision FG clip had me dying! 🤣I came across your channel because I needed a new knife, I’ve picked up two CIVIVI Vision FG knives, one for work and one for my EDC. Thanks for my gateway drug into the world of knives!
I used to own a vape shop, and have to totally say it's the customizeability of knives that brings in that addiction. Different steels and aftermarket parts is the biggest part of it. Even different size drives it. I'll probably order a Kunwu Compadre today, and really shouldn't, but it's a similar size to a Para 3, and I love the Para 3.
Haha when you said there is going to be a knife that makes you cross that line of what you want to pay, an ad played of kids shouting “it’s mine!” repeatedly
I said I'd never buy a knife over $300. Though I have multiple over $200. Then Spyderco revealed the rex 121 sage in G10 and I pre-order immediately. But I use knives in every area of life, home, work and hobbies. And I love using them all. But I have a lot and I have to work hard to cut stuff with all of them.
I have different things I collect inc knives. Recently the past year or two I have been collecting retro handheld games consoles. I like collecting "things" But my knife collection means more because of the depth involved with it all. It's not just the aesthetic design or designers or the history. It's the ergonomics, the engineering, the innovation, the advancements in metallurgy and heat treat. Theirs so much involvement going on with collecting knives, it's not just a "thing" it's an encyclopaedic knowledge base that actually benefits my understanding of the world and how other things work and why.
I remember my dad giving me shit after seeing my small knife collection, then when I left I had to walk past like 30+ cars he has collected on his lawn, driveway, front yard back yard, and garage. 😅
Ive been collecting pocket knives since 1975 when my Grampa gave me my first fishing knive... in 90's bought ridiculous bad knives on late night tv... these days i buy a couple of 100$ - 300$ knives per year... and always looking for a new one... mc love watching your channel... last 10 years i live in Israel and if i buy it i keep it... no returns... guys like you make it easier to buy knives... i edc a knife... and usually my alti AD20.5 shark foot with lynch deep carry clip... my most expensive and most carried... but i like to spice it up... and i am not a seller only buyer...and i gift away the ones i dont love
I think I'm drawn to collecting knives because I like tools in general. Devices that are made to do something, extend our abilities, and are often crafted with care well beyond necessity. There's something almost sacred about a well made device, too. Art and engineering are great, but sometimes they combine to make something greater than the sum of the parts.
I blame you metal complex for my expensive knife purchases lol. When I first started watching you I had only 2 Kershaw pocket knives. I now have over 60 knives, and a lot of high dollar knives as high as $700
I just like to be able to carry a different knife everyday....for 6 months 😆 I really do carry all my knives except for two full customs and one very pricy WE knife.
I just started collecting, stuff better than $30 kershaws, and the way i decided to do it was every knife needs to be a different blade steel till i get all of the blade steels. Forces some different styles and brands. Thanks to this channel and neeves I've spent $600 in a week on knives. Keep up the good content.
I've never collected knives, but I have acquired many over my 40 years but I have collected posters and toys and autographs amd many other things. sooo I know the feeling of getting what I allways wanted and look at it with enjoyment.
We are still all hunters&gatherers. Finding something that you really want is highly satisfactory. And wanting is caused by seeing someone else having it. Or recommending it. So channels like yours ( or to a much smaller extent mine) also is part of the reason why people collect pocketknives. 😊
I've always been a pocket knife fan. Didn't start seriously collecting till the pandemic. More recently I've narrowed it down to waiting for exclusive drops and sprint runs. Feels more exciting that way.
I didn’t understand how you could, or would even want a knife that represented, basically, a car payment. Having said that, I enjoyed the beauty and iterations of some of these knives. That’s why I warched this, and other, channels. Then, as a sci fi fan and author, I was watching this channel and he showed the WE GTC Solid and it became a grail knife! Add to that, I won a knife I’d never been able to afford (Thanks!) made of a steel I wanted in a blade shape i already collected. Now I want an Arch Nemesis too! Beautiful!
It’s fun, and there is artistry involved in everyone. Variety makes it more fun. I have over 50 years of collecting these tools and using them. Great Channel!! Mash that “Like” flat!!!
I thought to myself that collecting knives is pointless. But then after owning brands like enlan, freetiger and olitans, I became obsessed with it as it is really beautiful to look at. I recently ordered a ganzo and can’t wait for it to arrive. Plus I want to order the maxace meerkat in carbon fibre. Can’t wait to get that.
So funny you pointed that out, I have at least 5 knives I’ve never told anyone about 😂 and my “price limit” went from $200 to $2,000 within 6 months lol I caught the bug
At least for me the greatest thing I got from your channel is opening my eyes to different makers and designs of knives. When I first went in to collecting knives I was strictly going to collect Spydercos. Now, maybe a detriment to my wallet, I have expanded to so many designers like OZ Machine Co, Kunwu, and Shirogorov to name a few.
I only collect unusual knives. Getting the same type of knife over and over is a weird obsession. But having a token version of each one in a high quality format warrant a collection.
I don't remember when I started to carry a pocket knife every day. 'Tween probably so maybe 60 years ago. I remember that my first "nice" one was a Schrade Old Timer that my Grandfather dropped off the dock. I dove it up later that summer and he let me keep it. A relatively cheap collecting hobby to get into. Knives never deteriorate if you take care of them. Saying "I will never spend that much on..." anything ignores the reality of inflation.
I used to say I'd never spend more than $100 on a knife but I just bought my first knife over $100 and fully intend to buy much more expensive knives in the future after I graduate. It's for sure addicting af.
it's your fault that i've spent over $3400 in the last 8 months. it all started with your video about the miguron arma. it just clicked in my brain. you introduced so many beautiful knives that i became addicted. miguron, reate, rike, we etc. you do a fantastic but expensive job for me. greetings from germany
im a user, enthusiast, and collector (kinda). I use all of my knives but I absolutely love expensive beautiful materials and steels. I wanna collect all different kinds but not just to have them, if I buy them its to keep and use and love. I remember when 50$ was insane to me for a knife (the 10$ Tac Force era lmao) but now I'm in the CRK, CKF, Koenig area
It's a hit of dopamine. Collecting that is. Not just knives. More specifically hunting for items to collect. The journey is better than the destination is an old saying for a reason.
@metal_complex I enjoy your snide sarcasm more than I think like you. Would you consider doing a knife themed stand up routine for an April Fools video?
I have a relatively small collection of about 25 knives, some are expensive, over $600, but some of my favorites are more mid-tech that I EDC. However, ALL of them can be sold for at least 70% of what I paid for them, so they are an asset and I get to enjoy them in the meantime. My daughter thinks I'm nuts, but my son-in-law is a sneaker head, so he gets it LOL.
Speaking of hard to get the Mini Arius is dropping on DLT in a couple of days.I’m broke because of complex so I can’t go after it. Dang you Complex. LOL. For me getting a knife on a drop is half the fun no matter what you can afford.
Perhaps I don't fall into the category of "collector" with this stance, but I own a fairly large number of pocket knives that I would call a collection. But I've always had the mindset that because knives are ultimately tools, I'm unwilling to purchase one that I'm not going to use for its intended purpose. Same with my guns. I'm never going to buy a gun that I'm unwilling to shoot, and I'm unwilling to buy a knife that I'm unwilling to carry. That said, I'm not going to beat up on my nice $200 knife when I have a cheaper beater that I can get scuffed up. I understand and appreciate the value and the craftsmanship that goes into these tools. But that said, I doubt I'd ever spend more than a few hundred dollars on one for that very reason.
I would consider myself more user/collector with the emphasis on user. I have several knives in the 300 to 400 dollar range, but they get carried and used. I don't think I will ever buy a knife that's for display only.
It's okay, I don't have to tell anybody!🤫hahahaha A simple Civivi flipper/button-lock kickstarted my knife collecting.. Then I started getting into Microtech OTFs, modern traditional like JackWolf got me into GEC.. and the whole Knife Collecting hobby got me into flipping balisongs xD There are so many different parts of the hobby and different things that draw people in.
Great video I'm a pure collector I have some user But I collect not to sell I love it really can't explain it Great video after all you can't take it with you if you enjoy it I say Go for what makes you happy
I have 50-60ish knives more on the budget side I got gifted a 2 benchmades and a buck 120 but one knife I bought was over 100 and it’s the Kershaw bel air most of my knives were 40ish now I know what I like so it’s more in the 40-80 glad I love qsp, crkt, buck few more but I use my knife collection it’s like a wife picking what to wear and that’s why I don’t buy over 100 because it’s going to get scratched used and beat up which I like
Got my hands on a pm2 for 50 dollars. Only problem is it has a small chip in the blade, has some stripped body and pivot screws and has some lock stick. Issue is I have no idea how to fix it all 😅😅
As someone who is entirely unfamiliar with custom/art knife level of the hobby, you don't seem to consider the engraved blade Arch Nemesis an art knife? Why not, it seems to kinda check all the boxes for that classification right or am I missing something?
I’m not sure where I stop enjoying knives. I kind of like to stay in the 250 range and I like certain innovations like the shark lock or the Super lock but I want the knife to be built as a tool not so much a collectors piece even if it is high quality or even premium materials. I started just buying based on reviews and Blade HQ shorts now I actually look at materials and blade steels. Paid more for carbon fiber and 3v on a Ad20.5
It's an investment if the value might go up at all. Also if S.H.T.F and society gets to the point where the concept of a collectable is silly then you have a tool.
I wish I could flip. There’s not enough profit between buying and selling. Of course that depends on the price of the knife. If you can flip it within a week or two and make 50% profit or more might be worth it. Also I will never spend over $10,000 on a knife. I say that now but if I got a windfall maybe.
IMO, if you can afford a small batch or custom expensive knife, get one! Life is short. You're supporting a designer/craftsperson/engineer who wants to make a living making cool things. The good ones hold their value. They only get more fun to have around as the years and decades pass (They do last forever too, unless you are abusive).
Women get shinny things like purses, jewelry, clothes, and even their high heal stilettos. Now unless your Liberache or Prince most guys can't pull off that look ,lol. We like shiny things, too. So we get watches, "kives " Cuban chains and Trucks/cars. 😅 🎉 I like to match my knife with what I'm wearing that day😁.
Collectors who criticize a knife because it doesn’t look like an overbuilt Hinderer or ZT are equally annoying. They act like they are splitting cinder blocks on a daily basis.

Collect whatever you like, just don't call me weird and I won't call you weird. Deal? Deal! Lol
@@P.W.R. bro, the wild ones is funko pops
People have thousand dollar funko pop collections
With no other single purpose then to exist and be looked at
At least with watches and knives you can use them in a pinch for what they were designed for
But it all goes back to what you said
Everyone collects things
Let them if they want to
We are all penguins trying to find pebbles we like lol
What an excellent video and explanation of the commonalities and differences between us. I think tools like knives are part of our DNA going back to flint knapping and obsidian for survival and hunting, to making everyday tasks easier. A case can be made for knives we intend to use and carry, as well as "drawer queens" that we can just appreciate. I have both and wouldn't have it any other way. Thanks, MC!
I love your comment, “You won’t until you will.” It’s so true
I just love the pleasure of having a good knife, obviously well recommended by our hero of the knife community metal complex, love your content
I love my “expensive” knives but I love using my budget knives even more. Nothing is a “safe queen ” with me everything will be used but not abused😄
Only 12 mins into, and WOW what a GREAT explanatory video into the world of people interested in knives! 🤘🤩
Such a great video! So well spoken! Thanks for bringing back TKG. And thanks for always giving us a laugh.
Wow, a great video! It’s nice to see our hubby (and mist hobbies) explained so succinctly!
I’m a fidgeter with my knives.. thats the only thing I’m looking at when I buy a knife.. everyone do you!
"your punishment shall be judgment from afar" hahaha😂
"I swear honey, that package wasn't a pocket knife... Kplus is a K-pop distributor. I like K-pop now... Who TF is Jimin?!"
Beautiful!
I think enjoyment is the key. If I ever get frustrated or upset with collecting it’s time for me to take a break.
“Judgment from a far!” Sent me🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂
I remember you saying that the idea of displaying some of the nicer pieces was how Jim Skelton did it. You must open them. You know you want to
So funny you pointed that out, I have at least 5 knives I’ve never told anyone about 😂 and my “price limit” went from $200 to $2,000 within 6 months lol I caught the bug
I'm Straight up a Add kid who Needs a fidget toy. Nothing hits the spot like a modern knife.
Dream table right there ! Great taste MC!
Sweet! A new TKG! Love these.
it's your fault that i've spent over $3400 in the last 8 months. it all started with your video about the miguron arma. it just clicked in my brain. you introduced so many beautiful knives that i became addicted. miguron, reate, rike, we etc. you do a fantastic but expensive job for me. greetings from germany
im a user, enthusiast, and collector (kinda).
I have enough knives to give to each of my friends if we ever enter the end game lol
It's a hit of dopamine. Collecting that is. Not just knives. More specifically hunting for items to collect. The journey is better than the destination is an old saying for a reason.
Life’s to short, buy more knives and have fun!!
What is the knife next to the "SBD" and in-between the "Hinderer" and "Borka"?
Collecting is fun. I started with cameras that I use, so knives aren’t as bad haha.
I would consider myself more user/collector with the emphasis on user. I have several knives in the 300 to 400 dollar range, but they get carried and used. I don't think I will ever buy a knife that's for display only.
It's okay, I don't have to tell anybody!🤫hahahaha
A simple Civivi flipper/button-lock kickstarted my knife collecting.. Then I started getting into Microtech OTFs, modern traditional like JackWolf got me into GEC.. and the whole Knife Collecting hobby got me into flipping balisongs xD
There are so many different parts of the hobby and different things that draw people in.
Great video I'm a pure collector I have some user But I collect not to sell I love it really can't explain it Great video after all you can't take it with you if you enjoy it I say Go for what makes you happy
best knife spread in a while dayem
Could you imagine being mc’s kids and inheriting his collection!
Issue is I have no idea how to fix it all 😅😅
Some people collect paintings, our art collections have utility and function. #bladelife
I think it comes down to you like what you like and you don’t gotta explain that to anyone…well maybe the wife.
😂
Happy wife, happy life.
At least that's the theory.
As someone who is entirely unfamiliar with custom/art knife level of the hobby, you don't seem to consider the engraved blade Arch Nemesis an art knife? Why not, it seems to kinda check all the boxes for that classification right or am I missing something?
Humans are hoarders by nature, not just knives. hunter and gatherer of all things.
i had to many guns, time to move on to the next best thing.
I used to watch tarzan as a boy he had a knife,I collected them since I was a boy, also first blood was a favourite
Car go. If car no go, sell knife. Make car go. Go to work. Make money buy more knife.
It's an investment if the value might go up at all. Also if S.H.T.F and society gets to the point where the concept of a collectable is silly then you have a tool.
Hey MC, what is that guy with the wavy ti scales and huge Timascus pivot? Don't think I've ever seen that before.
Skiff Drifter 👍
Skiff made blades... I want one bad
I wish I could flip. There’s not enough profit between buying and selling. Of course that depends on the price of the knife. If you can flip it within a week or two and make 50% profit or more might be worth it. Also I will never spend over $10,000 on a knife. I say that now but if I got a windfall maybe.
It’s like Pokémon, gotta catch’em all!
I started buying knives "to fill a niche". Then, one morning I woke up with 60 of them!
I just want enough ones collected to be able trade them for a Strider 🤩
IMO, if you can afford a small batch or custom expensive knife, get one!
Life is short.
You're supporting a designer/craftsperson/engineer who wants to make a living making cool things.
The good ones hold their value.
They only get more fun to have around as the years and decades pass (They do last forever too, unless you are abusive).
What knife is on the left side with the 5 holes?
Shirogorov / Mayo Arctic Dr. Death
@@metal_complex Thank You very much!
I have recently made the decision to stop buying budget knives. I'm trying to limit myself to 3 or 4 $150+ purchases a year.
I also have made that decision. At least five times. 😂
@cintage I feel your pain. 😀 There are so many good budget knives I could buy one every week, but I would never use most of them.
@@papa_edc I usually go with Oscar Wilde when he said "I can resist anything but temptation". 😉
I'm into it more than I ever thought I would be. More than I wished I was,,,😥😥😥🤪
Collectors who criticize a knife because it doesn’t look like an overbuilt Hinderer or ZT are equally annoying. They act like they are splitting cinder blocks on a daily basis.
I just think they’re neat ❤
do a vid on the most expensive knives in your collection
I have.
@@metal_complex mb lol ill look
@@EliPenderDrumsi was wrong. The video I was thinking of is my "10 rarest knives" video. Technically not my most expensive. Maybe I'll do that down the road
@@metal_complex No you were actually right, 4 years ago you did a video called "the most expensive knives ive ever owned" or something haha but i figured a lot has changed in these past 4 years lol
@@EliPenderDrumsoh wow i totally forgot! Time for an update!
