It is a shame it couldn't have been a side mode in crash 4 especially with the insane amount of content the game already has. I feel making it standalone put too much pressure on what is really just a simple / basic/ fun multiplayer time killer.

The game is lacking crucial MOBA elements such as the destruction the enemy base, defensive structures, AI units (Minions) and hero progression throughout the game (such as leveling or passive income/items that make you stronger).
Calling CTRu a MOBA is just as dumb as calling Overwatch a MOBA. Heck Overwatch is closer to Rumble than LoL or DotA are.

Nitro Fuelled was full price and had subscription online AND had microtransactions, but the deal there was that NF was primarily an offline game with a beefy single player and local multiplayer experience, you were paying for a FULL GAME. The online mode and the microtransactions were there but at the same time, you didn't have to utilise them just to get ANY enjoyment of the title. Hell you could unlock everything without spending a single coin. It also means that when online mode is dead, the whole game isn't dead.
Rumble is JUST an online competitive mode at this point, you are paying just to play the damn thing at all. I get these sort of games need funds in SOME form to be ongoing, but the way they've handled it has repelled gamers from buying and they haven't pitched the game well enough to draw people in, no free trials without pre-ordering the game, no offline functions like Nitro Fuelled to appeal to more casual gamers, not even solid enough marketing making clear what the game actually is, people don't wanna buy a fully priced game they don't even know if they'll like or if it will even be alive after a year and Activision has not done anything to assure them otherwise.
I feel like this might be the reason the rumoured Switch release is delayed and what we've got here is basically a glorified beta with bare bones content while they're figuring out exactly how to expand this thing.

  • @captaineli2461

I wouldn’t worry too much about Crash going away, Toys for Bob have already assured that Crash will return after this. I think this game’s future is bright, with the heck ton of datamined content (there’s like 10 modes planned) and listening to the community, I think they could pull a No Man’s Sky type situation and redeem itself that way. Their listening to community feedback imo makes reviews and criticisms like this video much more important for them.

Yeah, I'm also one of the few people who's actually optimistic of this game's future. I remembered a survey was given out to those who played the beta a few months ago. Sadly, I never had the chance to try it out (I only have a switch) but I see that they're trying to understand what the community likes.
Frankly, I think things might get better for the game once the Microsoft deal closes soon. I didn't think Activision really cared about the game at all, which explains the poor marketing, and their weird decisions on making it a paid game and a closed beta, which meant that not a lot of people were able to try it out for themselves. This game was delayed to hell and back because of Activision's screw-ups, and it feels like it's not gonna get better with them around.
I get people are worried about Crash being exclusive, it's just a wait and see at this point. Nothing's been confirmed on this matter.

    • @elin111

Because it's 2023 and public opinion is finally turning against this live service trash. Look at Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, look at Marvel's Avengers, look at the mile long list of dead live services just this year, look at the games that were supposed to be live service that rushed to get rid of the live service components only to end up sucking anyways
Releasing yet another live service by this point si plain stupid and putting a Crash Bandicoot coat of paint isn't gonna change that. Crash Team Rumble is nothing more than a studio mandated cash grab attempt by Activsion to milk the Crash brand when it is revived and Toys 4 Bob is stuck working on this trash instead of making real games.

Actually, in the lawsuit surrounding the acquisition, Microsoft made it clear that they do not intend to have cross-platform series become exclusives, and from what I know the Xbox director himself confirmed that as well. Plus, they know full well that exclusives would hurt their sales more than it'd actually help them.

Plus it was always supposed to be a Crash 4 game mode, and yep - still feels like it should have been a free DLC called wumpa league
The biggest fault is actually how this game is fun.... but will only be fun for an extremely limited time, and like you mentioned... you won't even get past a main menu in years to come because it's online only so anyone that bought this has purchased a tea coaster worth of plastic
Also, if you are aware of or look up a game called Team Buddies on PS1 - this game is pretty much identical to Crash Team Rumble, so why would I rather go back and play Team Buddies than I am sitting here yet to even purchase Rumble........

The game could get a price cut, and voila, still a fun time that will probably make up for the cost spent on those modes, at least long term. It'd at least be the right thing to do.

One thing I will be devil's advocate for is that Rumble is ridiculously low on content, but at the same time the core gameplay IS solid. This was a contrast to Toys For Bob's previous endeavour for me, Crash 4 overflowed itself with fake longevity, extra challenges and padding that was more tedious than fun and effectively hurt the game in my opinion. Even worse, everything kinda felt like a flanderized version of what the earlier games done (and even then mostly only 1, as if they only played that one) while lacking the other fundamentals that made it enjoyable, we'd get a heap of extra challenges and longer levels but without the actual fun factor to balance it. Like no-deaths challenges in SUPER LONG levels, yeah that was well thought through. :P Now I get I'm kind of in the minority here, that many LOVED Crash 4, but I see this content/challenge overflow as still being a recurrent critique with the game, that they overfocused on that over keeping the core game fun.
Now Rumble admitedly feels like a lesson learned TOO well in this regard, it does need SOME extra content to it, but I appreciate in this case that Toys For Bob stopped and went "Okay before we go crazy with this, let's just flesh out the base we have and make sure it is solid". It is probably something they should have sorted a lot earlier in development and got the other stuff handled by now, but I appreciate this care and self restraint to some level, that from the get go it's not style over substance.

Honestly, I think that it could have worked if they put a bit more effort into it and pulled a bit more influence from Fortnite and Smash Bros of trying to get other franchises involved. Could have been fun to see a team of mascot platformers. See Crash, Spyro, Sonic and Mario (if they could get a deal to allow them). Guest appearances do bring a lot of interest to a game. Might have been easier before getting bought but would have been cool to see Crash, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper and Ratchet and Clank. With some unique costumes, stages and some of their music, might have helped.
The game also just needs a lot of quality of life stuff like unique death animations, some character interactions and other bells and whistles. Maybe local co op and some different game modes. There's plenty of stuff that they could do with a platform platformer royal like this. Have races from Crash stages, standard battle royal, bring the Chicken Challenge, Boss battles influenced by Sonic Rivals, Fall guys stuff, etc. Yes, it would need time and polish, but even still. It's more than this one mode.

Aside from the predatory "Games as a service" "Live service" model they're going for, specifically monetizing it as though it were a free to play game but with the up front cost and without the content backing up its worth, probably the biggest turn off about this game is how completely tone deaf this game is to the demographic it's being advertised to. As you questioned early into the video, "Who asked for this?" I can speculate with almost total certainty who exactly asked for it: Higher ups at Activision who saw the financial success the Crash revival was bringing them and wanted to combine that success with whatever other trend in the industry is also making lots of money. Fortnite prints money, Nitro Fueled did very well, combine those ideas together and this should be a smash hit right?
Unfortunately, along the way they lost sight of what it is they are making: A Crash Bandicoot game. The fanbase fell in love with the games to begin with because of the core platforming roots and the simple "Pay an upfront cost and then just play a game" style that the games go for. Crash 4 was a success largely because in addition to giving us the gameplay we were looking for there wasn't predatory monetization of the various skins you could unlock, you simply unlocked them through gameplay. If you're going to slap a price tag on just entry for a Crash Bandicoot game, you should go the Nitro Fueled route of giving us the bare minimum of an offline compatible single player campaign to go through, perhaps with optional co-op support. If you're going to make the game online only and require playing with other players, make it free to play and make the monetized content feel like bonuses you are buying to support the game rather than something you necessarily need to compete.
This game in its release state is a corporate money hungry worst of all possible worlds approach to how to handle a beloved franchise. It exists to make them as much money as possible, not to give the people it's advertised to a worthwhile experience. The bare minimum "Couldn't even be asked to make much in the way of new assets" approach they took with it speaks volumes in that regard. As appreciated as it is to get the occasional new character in the Crash 4 art style, I still can't help but feel like the entire thing pretty much boils down to a lazy cash grab. It makes me feel bad to say that too, because it must have been someone's job to figure out how this game would play and make the idea actually good, and it's clear that there are people like that who worked on the game and actually poured their heart and soul into it to the best of their ability. It' just such a shame they were tasked with creating this corner cutting garbage instead of something more respectful to the franchise and its customers.

Great review. Sad that I will probably never be playing this though...
I will just never understand for the life of me... why did this not launch on PC? Especially since the N.sane Trilogy and Crash 4 got PC releases too? Very bad decision on part of T4B (Or Activision). Why? Well.. let me explain:
    1) Online only games have a much higher engagement rate, lifecycle and dedicated fan-base on PC because we don't have to pay for those ridiculous online subscriptions (Imagine having to pay not only for your internet, but also for the "right" to MP JFL!!!!!!!)
    2) The PC MP community is DIE HARD‼‼‼ PC is where MP started... and where games usually end their lifecycles (Just look at Halo, Team Fortress, Dota, COD). Nobody plays the old HALO and COD games on console anymore due to backwards compatibility issues.... on PC, this ain't a problem. I was playing MW2 just earlier... no console gamer can do this. I just fire up steam and play.
    3) They could have tripled their sales based off the simple fact that they already got the ball rolling with the N.Sane Trilogy and Crash 4 launches on PC, and that there now is a Crash PC community. The pre-orders would have gone crazy.
    4) Cross-play drives competition and makes these types of games even more fun. CoD perfected this.
Now that T4B FAILED to do a PC release, the damage is already done, even if they were to release it on PC down the line. Now PC gamers will have to start all the way at the bottom of the battle pass and compete against everyone else on consoles.
What a seriously DUMB decision by T4B (Or activision..). Crash Rumble's golden ticket to longevity would have been including the PC community. Now it will most likely die by the end of the year, have minimal to no support, and really just end up on the scrap pile of other dead-end games.
I'm sorry... but I'm not buying a console just for one game. Consoles are the gayest thing on earth and has turned gaming into the commercialized, grifting, micro-transactional pile of steaming sh*t we see now in 2023 (no offense to console gamers... although y'all made it this way ).

I agree with everything said in this video, the state of the game is so bad that I can rarely ever find a match. And when I do find one it's either half full of bots or the match lasts 2-3 minutes despite having to waste 10 minutes just to get into a match. The game needs to be F2P so the servers have constant players but right now I can't really play the game anymore due to the dead servers.

30:28 I dont want people to feel guilted into buying a product they dont want and has nothing to do with what they want on the off-chance that the franchise they like gets a sequel they do like. All you're telling Activision is you'll buy anything with Crash's face on it, instead of quality products that actually cater to what you want. Activision is already several hundred layers of scummy with how they've mistreated the women in their employ, as well as all the lawsuits they've gone through that people ignore cause they happen to throw out a new Overwatch character at the same time. The LAST thing I want is people to buy the game because 'oh what if we dont get another Spyro.' It might take a few years but im sure we'll get another Crash or Spyro.
If I wasnt boycotting Actiblizzard's stuff, I would probably give the game a shot if it was free-to-play just for curiosity, but this game really seems as shallow as Activision seeing dollar signs in multiplayer content, so they think a Crash based multiplayer game will be free money

Guilt tripping isn't really the angle I was going for there... moreso just trying to point out that things are business driven, and the performance of one game can affect the next like dominos.
A prime example for me is Titanfall 3. I'd love to see that happen, but the second game didn't do anywhere near as well as Apex Legends so there's a good chance it never will.
Perhaps I could have worded that part a bit better... but in the end I still said I don't recommend it. So do what you will with that, I suppose!

Yea so basically what happened with the Red Dead Redemption and GTA IV remaster could happen to future Crash (or Spyro but idc) projects. Rockstar got cold feet after the absolute failure that was the "definitive" edition and cancelled the other remasters. Thankfully they may be coming back to them now with the rumoured RDR remastered leaks but Activision may not. Plus TFB is nothing like Rockstar, they could take some people off GTA VI and create a small studio like the ones they had pre 2013, to create an RDR or GTA IV or even Bully remaster, instead of outsourcing their legacy to amateurs. (Max Payne remasters are in good hands) But TFB can't afford that, the future is uncertain indeed

While I think most of the criticism in this video is fair, the overall "Who asked for this" comment isn't imo. Would I have loved to see Crash 5 or Spyro 4 instead of this? Yes, absolutely. Does that mean I have to hate this game because we didn't get Crash 5 or Spyro 4 now? No, absolutely not. This isn't targeted at anyone (especially not at Petronious because the review was really fair) or meant as an insult, but sometimes people are just so closed-minded because they want to see more of what they already have - and they refuse to try things they haven't seen yet.
I just don't think it's fair to throw games like this away because it's not "what they asked for". Imo the gameplay is super solid and it heavily leans on the Crash formula which is *clearly* noticeable. So I don't get the backlash because "this isn't Crash 5". That's just... unfair. Probably tied to the past of the Crash Bandicoot series though where experimentation didn't really go well.
Except in this case it... works. It really does. So far, EVERYONE who I either talked to or watched a video of and who has played it has said that it's fun. This is what a game is about, isn't it? To have fun. I'm having lots of fun playing it, heck I am pretty certain I've got my money's worth of time twice over already.
Think about it this way: Where would Crash Team Racing be today if people thought about CTR the same way they think about Rumble right now? I am certain that no one asked for a Crash kart racer back then as well, but they experimented - with success. I just wish that people would be more open-minded towards Rumble in the same way.

    • @Petronious

Good video, but I really disagree about CTRumble being "Not what people were asking for". People never know what they want before they get it. People didn't know they wanted Crash or Spyro before they released. People didn't know they wanted Crash Team Racing before we got it. Same thing goes for anything and everything especially within entertainment. We'll eventually get Spyro 4 or Crash 5 before too long, and I am okay with new ideas being brought into the fold, provided they're good ideas. And CTRumble is a good game like you said, far from perfect, but still at it's base a good game. Criticise Activisdion all you want for their scummy business practises, but bringing new ideas to the fold should never be discouraged.

I pre-ordered and have been playing the game consistently since launch. The game is so fluid and fun to play, even being max level in the Battle Pass and with my main I keep coming back. One thing I feel a lot haven't mentioned about this game being paid is that plenty of other games have a very similar model. Pretty much every Asymmetrical survival game (Dead By Daylight, Predator Hunting Grounds, Dragon Ball The Breakers etc) follows this same model. That being a paid online only multiplayer game with only one or two game modes which should almost definitely be free with loads of in game purchases. I feel like a lot of the hate this game gets is because the fanbase its for hasn't been exposed to the model rather than the model itself being an automatic failure. Heck, most Crash fans are upset enough to not play because it's online only after all.
