  • Mawi Asgedom makes a bold, unapologetic case for how immigrants make America safer and more prosperous. Flipping commonly held stereotypes and misconceptions, Mawi presents data and stories that show the indispensable contributions of immigrants to America’s business and civic life.
Mawi Asgedom has inspired over one million people with his uplifting speeches and written 8 bestselling books. A former refugee from Ethiopia, Mawi is the President of Mawi Learning, a provider of online leadership and success courses used by schools around the world.
Oprah Winfrey called her interview with Mawi one of her “Top 20 Moments” and ESSENCE magazine selected him as one of the “40 Most Inspiring African-Americans.” As a child, Mawi fled civil war in Ethiopia and survived a Sudanese refugee camp for three years. After being resettled in the US, Mawi overcame poverty, language barriers, and personal tragedy to graduate from Harvard University, where he also gave the commencement address to an audience of 30,000.

Hello! I'm a little girl who got assigned to read this book for school. My first reaction was, ugh homework! I started to read the book and fell in love with it. It is hands down one of my favorite books. I continue to maintain my grades because of it and has opened my eyes. My parents are immigrants and I realize how hard it is for people to get to America and how hard it can be in other country's. I continue to get straight A's and even though I'm only in middle school, I aspire to get into Yale, Harvard, or Princeton. Thank you Mawi. You are truly an inspiration.

What a compelling talk by an inspiring man. I really loved reading and frequently recommend to friends that they read Mawi's book "Angels and Beatles." Like Mawi I agree that immigrants are a 10 in terms of their contributions to America. I've worked with many immigrants over the years in the tech and finance fields and found they bring new ideas, knowledge and perspectives that help fuel creativity and innovation. I love the new foods, music and art they bring to the U.S. America is a nation of immigrants from every corner of the Earth and it's one of the reasons our nation has thrived.

Immigrants enrich us far more than we will ever know. As a student that has grown up in a rural, overwhelmingly Mexican town in West Texas, I have met some of the most brilliant minds and workers anyone could ever appreciate. And you know what? Two of those brilliant minds, my best friends, were from India and Cuba. It is a question of value, really. And my, is the value in our immigrant population astounding.

Legal immigration vs. illegal immigration. LEARN THE DIFFERENCE!

    • @abhabessha
      @abhabessha 7 лет назад +8

Their is no illegal human being. European invaded America and lived there by force. even they are not illegal because they are human and followed the system to survive and open new opportunities.

Smh, yes there is a difference.
Your right, there is no such thing as illegal human being. But remember, the reason why the U.S. is a desirable place to live, is BECAUSE of the rules we have!! You need some semblance of order.
I'm an immigrant of mixed ethnicity from S. Africa and came here when I was young. While I do believe we need to do more to help refugees and those seeking a better life, I still believe in the rule of law. We followed the rules and waited patiently.
People forget that the U.S. still takes in at least a million immigrants per year. On top of that, at least a half a million become naturalized citizens.
"European invaded America..." Is that the argument you're going to use?? Who didn't invade a foreign country? Unfortunately, that is human nature. Throughout our collective history, we conquer, force assimilation and profit, for the sake of our own identity and culture. Every group of people in history has done that. How do you think my ancestors felt during the Islamic Invasion of the Indian subcontinent?

I'm kinda confused. First he is talking about that he was a Refugee, then he called himself an immigrant. Well these are two different terms. While refugees normally have to go back to their country when it's safe again and being a refugee is more like a status, immigrants normally come with the intention to stay and live the so called american dream.
On top of that, USA has a better immigration system than most countries. Because the USA like to chose their immigrants. While countries like germany (where I'm from and live) lets everyone in. Regardless their education, profession and/or value for economy. So sure thing immigrants make america great.
But why mentioning Trump and that he got Trump glasses on? Trump is only against ILLEGAL immigration. And why? Because illegal immigration won't make america great.
    Greets from germany.

Well said. I did notice the difference in terms he used at the start. He suddenly went from Refugee to immigrant. I agree completely, but I am not gonna get involved since I aint American.

WOW! You really missed the facts. Illegal immigrants do the work that americans don't want to do. The only so called "illegals" are those fleeing from Mexico. When flying or driving into America you have to have a passport, a visa and return date (air or car). If you don't leave when you stated, they come looking for you. As for the definition of "refugee". Refugees come to places like Canada, USA, Australia, England, Germany etc because of "persecution" in there home country. What governments do now is give pass to "citizenship" to refugees fleeing home country. Refugees are not temporary. It takes almost 2 years for a refugee to get passage into all the countries above. As for Trump glasses....guess you miss his stories about other immigrants who have contributed far more than Trump, "greater of Google, greater of Yogurt company.....

Some people talk about words like immigrant refuge migrant illegal immigrant etc these are all people like you who wanted better and safer life for themselves and their family! So if you think at a deeper level, they all mean the same thing. When the bill passes to help dreamers get their citizenship status, they will be called legal immigrants with just one signature, but remember these are still the same people.

So what if illegals do the work that the yankees don't want to do??? Illegal is illegal, that person broke the law. Follow the right path of citizenship (just like my parents of West Indian descent to Canada did!) or stay in your original country and make that country great again!

This guy is correct. Immigrants such as Andrew Carnegie, Elon Musk, Alexander Graham Bell, Nikola Tesla, Steven Chen, Wernher Von Braun...just to name a few...made this country great. However, these people came in legally. Those that are coming in illegally are causing discord in this country.
