Finally a good depiction of why they're called Ships of the Line. This is how they engaged each other.
Often, but not always - in later combat (eg Cape St Vincent, Camperdown, The Nile, Trafalgar) the British developed the tactic of "breaking the line", reverting to the melee tactics of the 17th century
But yeah, this is exactly where the name "Ship of the Line" comes from. Along with "Line-of-Battle ship", which is where we eventually got the name of "Battleship" from
The British finally broke the back of the Dutch Navy at Camperdown by not sailing in a line at all, instead going for a disorganized mob attack against the Dutch Line.

Oh hey, its you again!

Looks amazing!! I want more ... what film is this?!
No matter the century, the Wilhelm scream is timeless
Love how the Dutch actually speak their own language in this movie, unlike other depictions where all nations seem to speak English fluently.
it's a dutch movie mate. i highly recomend it
Do you expect the studio to spend the money to pay the actor to learn Dutch?
@@Tattletale97why not
@warwolves1095 feels good, the brits are actually british, the Dutch are actually French simps lovely 😂

"I need to shit" is one of the most funniest and random things ive heard in a war film
Probably a really realistic problem to have in the moment too
Imagine what a pain in the ass that would be… literally. You‘re trying to fight and reload guns and run around while you have a massive dookie in your pants.
@@johannr2658 that reminds me of that marine who saved himself by trowing his shit at a vietcong soldier ambushing him

There's deleted scene on bluray where he goes toilet in middle of battle and cannon ball blows him lol

Imagine the level of smack talk going on when you're close enough to grapple-hook and taunt your enemies. Probably rivaled early 2000's CoD multiplayer lobbies.
Smack and Stabs
Or some of the night fighting in the Solomon Islands, where destroyers occasionally closed to distances where they could turn AA guns on each other
Without context, one might think this was a very intense disagreement about the best pattern of red white and blue stripes.
To be fair, even in context, waving a flag you didn't recognise was more than enough reason back then to hate the other guy. Such was the drill and politics.
I mean I guess any war is just arguing over which flag is best
2:52 This shot is so beautiful
Agreed 👍
Reminds me of old dutch naval period paintings. Truly magnificent film captured them well
I wish more movies can focus on 16th, 17th century.
Looks brutal

3:59 Wilham scream never gets old
Hard disagree, instantly ruins immersion for me every time. It should never be in a immersive film.
@@BeKindToBirdstalking his scream to load the port cannons? Seems realistic for the situation imo. Idk why it would take the immersion out of anyone viewing it.
@@tjanderson5892 No I mean the scream that is famous in every movie as like a comedy generic bad guy dying sound. It doesn't belong in a serious film and is practically the big red flag that says "fun flick" to me. I don't prefer that genre myself but it I don't mind if others do

I saw this movie on Netflix a long time ago. I don’t understand Dutch, so I had to read the subtitles, obviously. But the movie was still very very good and I am glad I got to see it.

To be faire, when you have a guy Tarzan his way on an enemy ship don’t expect too much. In real life this is the perfect way to get yourself shot.
@@florians9949 TBF stuff like that would have happened IRL
Yeah, that is the full Hollywood part, this is not how you board a ship.
Captain: "A portion of rum to the man who puts the most English to the sword!"
Crewman: "A whole portion, Sir? Wow! I'll get right on that!"
I can't believe they put a Wilhelm scream in this.
So, very good! I love the battles in the Sea
Crazy to think that's pure seamanship, no machines, no computers.
Not a single cell phone in sight!
This is the equal rights that women don't want to have
Having to coordinate the sails, the steering, the guns, all while communicating with other ships... insane
Crazy to think that these were points in our past
The action is a little hard to follow. I love the boarding scene. I can’t believe this movie is not available in America. Thank you for the scenes you have provided.
Thats is "Skill issue"
And to think we come so far that one modern ship can quite literally one shot one of these ships
Imagine a thousand of those ship, scorching the Barbary Pirates and states.
Nice Wilhelm scream at 4:01
I don't think people realize how fast cannon fire is, they go off like rockets, milliseconds before the next.
Back when we were still powerful 🥲
Hey at least yall still have de Ruyter and Tromp in your navy.
Sing it with me,
"Rule Britannia!"
"Britannia rules the waves!"
"Britannia ruled the waves till De Reuter came!"
This movie and your comment are Netherland propaganda. We ruled the waves in the end, then two hundred years later we saved your tiny country from the Germans. You're welcome.
Then they ruled them again ahaha
Then Brittania ruled the waves again for another 2 centuries 😂😂
Perhaps - but never in the manner in which Britain did prior to De Reuter. It would take England decades to replace her fleets during which time the Spanish, French, and of course Dutch empires arose.@@aidenmyatt6842
Yes but then the Dutch took the English best flag ship
Playing dodgeball in highschool be like :
If you took a full broadside from a 1st Rate Ship of the Line, like the Royal Charles here, at 50 meters or so like depicted, there wouldn't be much of a ship left. The 7 Provinces that De Reuter was commanding was a 2nd rate, or heavy 3rd rate. Ships fought in lines, and I get why they're so close for filming purposes, but they didn't engage that close to each other. They wanted to disable each other, not obliterate each other.
Both ships where ships of the line, both of the first charter. Both had 80 cannons. De zeven provinciën(1664-1665) was 161 feet long, had a beam of 43 feet(width of the ship) and had a hold of 12 feet. She had different loud outs during her time as flagship for Luitenant Admiraal Generaal Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruyter but during the four day battle she had:
28x 36 pounders on lowest gundeck
14x 18 pounders on upper gundecks
12x 12 pounders on upper gundecks
26x 6 pounders on open decks(Quarterdeck, forecastle and poopdeck)
While the Royal Charles(1655 formely named Naseby) was 161 feet 42 feet in length, 44 feet and 8 inch i beam and 18 feet and 3 inch in hold. Size and caliber of guns is unknown.
Fun fact: during the tweedaagse zeeslag/ St James’s day fight de Zeven Provinciën had a 1 vs 2 fight with The Royal Charles, the then flagship of commander Prince Rubert of the Rhine, and the Sovereign of the Seas(1637) a 100 gun ship of the line, she would be renamed HMS Sovereign and even later HMS Royal Sovereign. She was also known as the golden devel because of her gilded stern. De zeven provinciën withstood this attack and forced Rubert to change his command to the Royal James(1658 former name The Richard) . Both the Royal Charles and the Royal James would be present at the raid on the Medway, the Royal Charles ended up captured by the dutch while the Royal James ended up being burned by the dutch. The now named Royal Sovereign was not present but was in Portsmouth at the time of the Raid on the Medway
That isn't true at all, there are multiple accounts of ships fighting yardarm to yardarm for hours.
It takes a lot of killing and shooting to obliterate a wooden ship and kill enough of its crew.
Also forgot to add. Around the time of these ships two rating systems where around, one based on the amount of guns(1660+) and one with the amount of men onboard(1626+ table drawn up by Charles I) the latter was for the pay of the crew, shipsize or ardement where not listed. I think the commenter is mistaken in the version of rating that would be applicable in this case(commenter is prob thinking about later dated ships). Both ships would be second or third rates in later versions of the english rating system
Almost "admirable" (pun intended) how you got everything wrong, even De Ruyters' name. 🤦🏻
@@BeKindToBirds OH of course! Boarding was also prevalent during this period - because again - ships did not intend to obliterate each other for many reasons - but one major one would be to possibly commandeer and to ransom prisoners and plunder loot. Wooden ships like to float indeed, and it takes a lot to sink them. Nobody argues that. However, ships wouldn't typically be THAT close to each other especially during line fighting such as this. You wouldn't ever want to be the leader of the line moving in that close to an opposing line...I'll tell you that. Did it happen here and there? Sure. But typically you did not approach war "ships of line" with their broadside pointed at you, at that close of range unless you had a death wish. It's Hollywood fantasy, in reality Captains were much smarter with their vessels.
Amazing clip! This is the best line of battle scene I've ever seen (there's not much competition though) I guess its only recently possible with CGI to create the scale. Awesome stuff!
"Retreat!"
Anyways, the battle ensues, the ship in question is taken a prize- the rest of the fleet limps away - some other ships are contested-
When the British see the French anywhere in the world: 4:19
A must what movie. Very good, one of the best. Voor sailship navy battles. With some Dutch politics of 17century thrown in. Also Tywin Lannister is in the movie. It's called Miguel de Ruyter.
Admiral
Anyone know the name of this battle? spent 10 minutes trying to find a reference for it and couldnt find anything. searched through all three of the Anglo-Dutch Wars and couldnt find anything about De Ruyter cutting the English line
There were four Anglo-Dutch wars and cutting the English line? You mean the Raid on the Medway perhaps? These scenes are from of course a dramatic impression of the Four Days Battle in 1666 and what I believe, the second day. Hope this information helps you!
It’s the four day war, from the scenes prob a cropped up version of day 2 and 4. On the second day multiple line cutting where done by the dutch on the 4th day ships where boarded and there was a overal english retreat
(Just start at 0:00 aka scroll the video to the beginning)
not only is thid ship absolutely gorgeous to look at, but it looks entirely realistic.
Think of the intensity of that and trying to keep ppl together to follow orders.
Who were the English fighting here?
I also love how the cannons fire as soon as a light is put to them.
Historically those cannons could take a few seconds before they lit. But 🤷♂️
That was very cool.

Admiral micheal de ruyter our hero of the sea haha he shot the hole harbor in one piece in Engeland en taked the royale boat as souvenir
This film is really cool even if the action is a little hard to follow and the battle tactics are a bit off but at the same time myself and so many others love what they were trying to do. There's a really cool authentic feel about the battles ship of the line fighting in a line as it actually happened they probably didn't get that close to each other and I doubt de ruyter would jump onto another ship like that, he was a genius and wouldn't lose control like that.
I've only seen clips of this film on RUclips but there is so much to like and so much that feels a bit messy, the feeling I get where they really got it wrong was with de ruyter himself, we don't get to see his strategies unfold in all the battles clips I've seen and him as a character is a bit forgotten amongst everything else
If you go and watch the film (which I have seen) you will also get to see what their strategy is and the plans they are going to make for that fight
@@baspruim739 I heard critics where very critical of the lack of De Ruyter showing his plans
I could imagine since this is non fiction (although overly dramatized) they tried to make it look as it was. Chaotic, smoke everywhere and brutal.
On the fourth day of the forth day battle(depicted in this scene) Michiel de Ruyter gave a general boarding attack order to the fleet. It wasn’t to uncommon during this time to have very close fighting with ships. The first version of a flag system was introduced under Ruyter but the fighting where intense and during the battles he thought ships where changing hands by boarding so it wasn’t that uncommon. During the four day battle the dutch captured 6 ships. It is however unlikely to see the commander of a fleet board a other ship

Average depiction of my my mind attempting to silence my intrusive thoughts lol
as much as I like this depiction, I wish the film makers had enough budget to have explosive charges in the water to mimick cannon balls hitting the water and splashing. It just looks really bad when you only see puffs of smokes and no splashes from cannon balls.
Don't forget that they had a budget of 8m dollar for a movie of 2,5 hours full of action..

1:24 It's kinda weird how they have one of the greatest admirals in history run around like a headless chicken trying to micromanage shit that is waaaay below his pay-grade. No way he would have waddled around the deck of his ship in a blind panic screaming at some powdermonkey to load a gun faster. He's the Admiral ffs. He has an entire fleet to manage.
Yeah, he would never be a greatest admiral in history with that attitude. He should have stay on deck focusing for tactical movement of the entire fleet. Left the micromanagement to the Captain of the ship instead

What's this movie 🎥🍿 called??
Am I allowed to add music to this for my example music?
Very unrealistic depiction of cannon ball damage. The flying pieces of wood would have shredded anyone nearby and the concussive force could jellify a man's brain, if he were very close to it.
It shows multiple people full of splinters. It's a far better depiction than any other movie. Also, it very much depended on the size of cannon versus the planking of the ship. Not every hit was catastrophic. Many would bounce off the sides if they even hit.
@@CFLsurfr True, the larger, heavier built ships could have planking and framing so thick it acted like armor.
Its a Dutch sailors. Men of iron. They ate flying pieces of wood for breakfast.
Any other fleet: *exists*
The British: “hey”
The Dutch actually won most battles against them in the 17th century
Not only won, kicked their asses. The Dutch under Admiral De Reuter invaded England and set fire to the entire capital ship fleet. England was spread very far and thin during this time, and the Dutch took full advantage of it.
