Can't wait to get in and try it out! My Sony a6500 syncs at only 1/160, so it's going to be a game-changer. Thank you both for the explanations.

Justin. I am shooting with a Sony NEX 6 in a Nauticam housing using YS-D2 strobes. For a while I used sync cords and that allowed me to increase flash sync speed a maximum of 1/320 (if I remember correctly). The increased flash sync speed was definitely exciting to work with.
However, after I flooded two strobes and a few sync cords I went back to Fiber optics (and the rather low sync speed of 1/160). The sync cord connection on the SEA&SEA strobes are IMHO too unreliable.
Now I am looking at getting a strobe trigger from www.trt-Electronics.com. The question is what type would fit the housing (there is two types for Sony on offer). If you already have an idea about how you would increase your flash sync speed on your a5000, then kindly let me know. Thanks.

Just been chatting to Alex, and we both felt that we should mention that having high-speed sync options are particularly useful for those with cameras with low native flash sync speeds. For example, the Nikon Z series cameras have a sync speed of 1/200s, but if used with compatible flash control circuitry and strobes, this could be increased to a faster speed for fast-moving subjects.

Very confused - when using land flash (SB910) my camera will only sync to 1/250 on or off camera...

It is almost impossible to give you a complete answer here, need to know the camera model, etc. Why not post your inquiry on the Wetpixel forums (wetpixel.com/forums/index.php)?

If you use video lights, you can use fast shutter speeds all the time because you have continuous light, right?

Yes, you are not limited by sync speed, but you are limited by the power of the continuous light!

Could someone explain to me why those high speed sync devices cost sooo much ? It's literally 2 leds, why is it 400 usd (and there's no waterproofing needed or fancy case, it's just a PCB!). I can buy a real flash on Amazon for 100 usd that is HSS capable (with many other options), what is going on ? Am I missing something or are they just trying to milk us because there's not that many people producing them atm?

I think you are paying for the small number of units sold, and the complications and time involved in hacking the TTL protocols.

@@Wetpixel-Live Thanks. So basically if the plans for this leaked on the internet, I could build mine for 5 usd :D

@@Wetpixel-Live Very frustrating though, if they priced it at a more accessible price point, I'm sure they would sell thousands of these, even people with small point and shoot cameras would see the worth in spending 50 bucks to get to 1/320s instead of 1/160. And they still make plenty of profits at 50 bucks. Also they sell non TTL protocols that are the same price. Most people just want to shoot manual at a fast shutter :)
