By this point I think it’s pretty well understood that FE:A took certain liberties with the English translation. There are some changes I think were unnecessary or weakened the characters, but for the most part, I think the changes were very good. The character voice clips are a good example. Nenilein made a really good video about “role language” and how it can be difficult to translate certain speech patterns from Japanese to English. I think Awakening’s English voice acting did a good job of making all of the characters unique and communicating their personalities. That said, even if it isn’t a 1:1 translation (not that I think such a translation is possible) some of the shared and related lines between parent and child units were translated. I think one of the most memorable ones is that the Avatar, Robin, says, “Time to tip the scales!” as a critical line, while Morgan has the variation, “Time to even the odds!” Both communicate that they are tacticians who can change the flow of battle at a moment’s notice, just with slightly different wording. This is a really long and nerdy comment to leave on a six year old video, but, um, I hope someone finds it interesting.
I love how the parents and kids have their own distinct speech patterns. (For those who can't hear it, the parents speak more formally while the kids have a rougher, and/or more "immature" style of speech.)
JojoFan4Evr I think he was referring to your statement of "the parents speak more formally"... I don't think there is a pattern, it's just whatever is more suited for the character.
Hatsune Macaroni Hard to say since they haven't gotten said anything since. -shrug- And most of the mothers do speak more maturely and/or formally than their children -just with their own speech manners. This isn't to say there is a pattern or anything because they all speak differently. Even when they literally say the same thing, like Miriel and Laurent, because of how they emote they sound different. (If I'm making any sense that is…? I tend to ramble.)
I sincerely admire the people who are able and willing to translate and interpret between such contrasting languages. Seriously look at this example: 覚悟はいいですが - Japanese characters Kakugo wa īdesuga - Japanese phonetics Preparedness is nice - Literal google translation Are you ready to finish this - Final English interpretation I chose this phrase simply because it sounds pretty and kind of resonates with me. Heard at 1:52.
I know I'm a year late with this response, but the reason why the final english translation differs so much from the literal translation on your example is the fact that you quoted the original sentence incorrectly. It is iidesu ka, not iidesu ga. Ka, as well as ga, carry crucial meaning in this sentence, because ka signifies a question, and ga is used to pronounce a fact.
Ryroe One of the replies already mentions the proper romaji for the quote. Just a typo on my end. We can see the hiragana says ka and not ga, but thanks for the further clarification. ✲゚。.(✿╹◡╹)ノ☆.。₀:*゚✲゚*:₀。
I... Kinda prefer the lines for the English version, to be honest. I'll give the Japanese version credit for the children taking a page from their family, but the English one has such great critical quotes. Let us never forget the absolutely hilarious "DON'T MESS WITH A BUNNY!!"
The localization prioritizes comedy when it comes to freedom with the script. Most of the time it works. Like "Wyvern in heat" comment Chrom makes in their S support with MU. ...but I'm also the minority and I dislike the localization in general even though it is objectively great.
goldengurl20101 Or because I played the game in Japanese first an entire year in advance? You do notice that people tend to usually like what they get used to first, right?
Yeah, overall I like the japanese voices better. It really captures the personalities of the characters. Don't get me wrong, the English version does that, too, but the japanese version ( in my opinion) just does it better.
+shadowofchaos725 Admittedly I like how earnest the Japanese dub is for the most part, it's supposed to be cheesy so I say full cheese! It would be nice however if some of the really good English dub bits were in there though, like, "Pick a god and PRAY!"
I feel like the children’s quotes resembles a lot to their parents because that’s one of the few memories of their parents, and as someone who lost their parents, they mimic their parent’s quotes to feel less lonely and eventually got used to it
I do like the idea of sharing critical quotes, but at the same time the children in the end are different people from their parents. I think it would've been a good idea to take one critical quote from their parent, and had the rest as their own; that way you get the sentiment that they picked up something from their parent/they miss them AND that they're their own person. Thanks for the video, I love insight into the Japanese version of the game!
If you hear closely enough, barring Laurent who matches Miriel in both tone and mannerism, and in SOME cases, the MUs and Morgans, all of the other children sound slightly different, because they have a different style of speech and attitude. The best examples of this are Brady and probably Wood (Owain), where they basically say the same thing, but with a different speech pattern and mannerism.
I can't believe I didn't answer this long ago. Yes, like Joshua over here said, they still have their own personality! They say the same thing, in a different tone in Japanese.
As much as I love the english voice for Inigo, and some of his lines, I can't help but think, with some of the japanese lines mixed in there, Inigo would sound much more badass. Like jeez, he's so badass here, I can see why he's so beloved.
I actually expected them to use Boku 2 the first time I played as FeMU... the one Sawashiro voiced as well. It's almost weird hearing the Boku 1 voice with just formal Japanese tacked on at the end.
Thank you so much for this!!! I only play with the Japanese voices since I dislike the english ones, but I can barely understand what they say (except for stuff like "Dual Attack!" and "I'm sorry!"), but now thanks to your video I know... thank you thank you! It's especially nice to know how the differences between their way of speech could be translated, and I loved hearing Mari's super polite talking with Brady's thug speech right after it XD
I know it's 3 months after you posted... but err... Maribelle's speech isn't exactly "super formal" with her criticals. One of them is equivalent in tone to "Screw you, good sir!"
I like the Japanese voices better than the English one because the characters sound awesome. I only wish that when I set the voice language to Japanese, it would STAY Japanese (when I exit the game it turns back to English) and show subtitles of what characters are saying on the screen (because we don't know what they're saying).
It's a little wanky. Sometimes you have to switch it a full rotation to get it just right (meaning back to English and then back to Japanese again). It was an add-in for the western versions so it's kind of understandable but annoying nonetheless, sure.
The problem is, the Japanese voice set is a completely different experience that goes with the ACTUAL Japanese script. Thank the localization for that. So, unfortunately, "Time to tip the scales" is simply "Senkyoku o kaeru" or simply, "changing the tide of the battle".
I vastly prefer the English lines, if this is the case. It makes all their personalities feel just that much more unique. And some of the say similar things anyway. One of my favorite lines in the game was always, "I say when it ends!" It probably would've had a little less impact for me if Chrom ran around saying it, too.
You know what would have been cool? If the child inherited BOTH parents' critical quotes (2 from each). Would have been a boatload of extra work, but that level of detail would be crazy.
That would be pretty funny, actually. That would mean that the combination of the two ideal quotes would actually be rather silly. "Pick a god and tip the scales!"
This was amazing, Thank you so much for putting this together!!! Watching Inigo and Olivia was probably my favorite part, but it was just so good. Thanks‼♥
The first time I played, Morgan (F) endeared herself to me immediately by having her first critical quote be my favorite one from Robin (M) - "Checkmate!".
I love how people are brawling about how how the game originally was like... If his name was Wood his name was Wood... Ya kinda weird that it was changed really, it's like being called Mitchel when your name is Michael.
Wow, I really enjoy watching these vids you put out of this game. Especially this one, I really do like that touch of shared quotes between parent/child. It's unfortunate some things didn't make it into the US version, like different scripts for MU (especially the Mute option), but hey, at least the game came out over here!
I was checking this to compare with Fates Japanese critical hits, I noticed, they share critical hits with their Fates counterparts, and they show they have grown, specially Owain. Inigo sounds pretty much the same. Shared quotes are "Forgive me..." and "What are you looking at?" Severa is a bit less rough with her voice. Shared quotes are "You're an eyesore!" and "I can do this!" This is my true power!" and "I can't... control my power...!"
I absolutely love this music! I want it! Also, I love Panne/Yarne's crit when they look like they are glitching across the screen! 7:50 It looks so cool
How interesting! I always thought their quotes were similar to their parents in the Japanese version, but to have all of them from their parents, is really interesting =D

I'm not complaining about the change. I'm just saying I like these small things. You DO know I don't play my English copy anymore, right? Well, I dislike "Inigo" in general. So you made the worst possible example for me.

Every other freaking sentence. Even improperly. xD It was cute at first, but it got annoying for me personally. I don't *DISLIKE* her that much but it irks me even more considering she has the same voice actress as Olivia. xD
This reminds me of my op save file. But because of an error that save file ( and the others ) are gone. Nowi X Gauiss huh? That's an interesting pair. What were most of the other ones? I know ones like Olivia (Obviously) but I can't put my finger on Severa. Who's red-haired and gets Luna?
I found it funny that Cordelia said "You're really persistent, aren't you?!" right after the enemy survives her crit with Miracle. lolololol

I like how Olivia was shy and timid but Inigo was just straight up badass
It's Inigo, what did you expect?

Except for Nowi I think.
Opallyx Nah it's there. Nono refers to herself in 3rd person ("Nono's not afraid of you") while Nn uses 1st person and also uses "desu" in her speech.

Save for Chrom and Lucina. Where Lucina seems to be more proper.
2:55 LMAO Inigo is all like "I see how you looked at my mother >:C"
oh my god xD
Fun fact:
The Japanese name for Severa is Serena, wich means "calm". On the other hand, Severa itself means "strict". Nice lil thing.
Stay woke
In Japanese, their names together mean peace and love
Jesus male Morgan has a more masculine voice than default male Robin
Robin is a late bloomer???
That's actually Male Voice 2.
That’s true in the English version too, Todd’s voice doesn’t fit in the slightest lol
I like it how Olivia and Inigo have dialogues that are basically the same thing, but simply expressed sooooooo differently.
I sincerely admire the people who are able and willing to translate and interpret between such contrasting languages. Seriously look at this example:
覚悟はいいですが - Japanese characters
Kakugo wa īdesuga - Japanese phonetics
Preparedness is nice - Literal google translation
Are you ready to finish this - Final English interpretation
I chose this phrase simply because it sounds pretty and kind of resonates with me. Heard at 1:52.
'Kakugo wa iidesuka' is more like 'Are you prepared'
