  • Hello :)
    This is the requested transcription I did of the Elton John song "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting'" from his 1973 album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". The bass player on this track was Dee Murray.
    This transcription can be found at www.muzento.com under Advanced - Songs.
    This song creates a lot of energy! The tempo and non stop 8th note rhythms make this one a little tricky to play. There's a certain level of stamina needed to get through this one...haha, I was huffing and puffing after every take :) I think that's part of the challenge in this song is to not get too caught up in the excitement and energy of the song otherwise you might run out of gas ;)
    This has the classic Do La Sol (1,6,5) bass line, but the tempo and the ties over the bar line make it a little more challenging.
    And Dee Murray, was never lazy or took the easy way out. He was able to add some subtle little changes to each verse and chorus to keep things interesting. He was such a good player!
    Nigel Olson is a pretty darn good drummer too I have to say. Talk about underrated musicians...I think he would qualify.
    Good luck with this one. You might have to work your way up, but that's okay...it's good for us :)
    I hope you enjoy it :)
    Don't forget to like and subscribe and thanks for watching :)

    Dude your bass cover instructions are the best! Seriously. The clear fretboard visual, the tabs and notation that go along with the song. I've learned fooled around and fell in love, jungle love, and now this song in about an hour or less each. I'm in a cover band and we stay busy. You save me many hours trying to figure out the songs by ear. You are a bad ass bass player; thank you!!!

    Who says eighth notes can't be TOTALLY rock and roll? Dee Murray was SO good!

    • @BassCovers
      @BassCovers  7 месяцев назад +1

      So good! 8ths are totally rock and roll. 16ths are funky, and triplets and swung 8ths are bluesy or jazzy...in a simple way of looking at it :)

    Played disco/dance clubs for years back in the late 70s. Every so often we'd drop this in the set around 10pm on a Saturday Night without warning and the place would explode. Always thought a key modulation would've been nice at that break around 2:50, but we never got around to trying it. Wonderful work, as always, Greg!

    Thank you Greg. The use of a pick on this song, combined with the steady 1/8-note pattern, really made it pop! As you can see, I like to request songs that give you a good workout (think "Devil With a Blue Dress On"). 🤗

      Just start out playing the root note (you can see the key in Greg's tablature). Get comfortable with staying with the right key and staying in meter (not slowing down or speeding up but staying perfectly on tempo). Once you're there you can start trying to add in the "true" bass line...you'll get it. Like Greg said, you'll be surprised what playing through that song a few times and getting the feel for it. Go for it, David!
