Hi Harry, Much agree with you on the B500. On my first visit many years back in our Elise, we did that road having read lots about it and left disappointed. We did love the area though and were determined not to be put off. On a subsequent trip I routed us from Freiburg up towards Baden Baden without using the 500 and it’s a revelation. I’d say equals most of the famous alpine passes. Moreover you should look at some of the roads over the border in the Vosges Mountains of France. I love the area so much that I’ve recently emigrated to Germany and live just an hour now from the Black Forest. Spot on Harry, apparently the B500 used to be great several years ago. I've been twice on motorbike tours, most recently about 4 years ago and thought it was a complete waste of time. It would only be interesting to ride or drive if at least double the new speed limits. There are other good roads around there, but the attitude to bikes and general speed limits means its off my list now for a touring holiday.
Dear Harry: As usual, we are delighted with these fabulous combination of continental mega roads, exclusive cars and gentry manners show. Some of your followers are waiting for a tour in Spain. Please, let me recommend a nice mega road here in the north: Mazcuerras-Puentenansa-La Hermida-Fuente Dé. No regrets...
We went to the Schwarzwald a couple of times about 10 years ago and really enjoyed it. The roads (inc. the 500, but also the tight back roads) were great and the people were very welcoming.
Great video! Thanks, again, for including the "real world": the crowds, the low speed limits, the disappointments, as well as the spectacular views and performance of that Project 8(!). The Project 8--a _reliable_, four-seater, _British_ automobile! Mrs. M., thank you ever so much for hefting that camera at all times, around neck-stretching corners, slammed back in your seat on straights, craning around to let your husband opine during full-lock braking. You are a gem!

Hello again, 'Harry' I totally agree 'paper maps' are the best way to plan a route, I've travelled many 100x1000 miles driving in the UK, Europe & USA over my 50+ of driving with maps always by my side, my two sons both in their 30's will only use 'satnav', crazy. Regards, RichardA.
Very enjoyable and informative video as always Harry! I did the B500 three or four times on a motorcycle in the early 2000's and it was an absolute joy when not in cloud. Great tarmac, superb open sweeping bends and fantastic views. I remember following a local 911 on an epic ride. But you are right, it is now crowded and clamped down by draconian speed restrictions and cameras, not to mention the weekend bans on bikes. Sadly it is now best avoided, but other parts of the Black Forest are still wonderful.
Thanks Harry for confirming I need to go back to Germany with the family on a road trip! You even stopped at the same cuckoo clock shop in Triberg I visited as a teenager. Love your road trips and detours. Just keep going!
I found the same thing about the northern end of the B500 last year - all 70 limits. Despite that, a biker had still fired himself 50m off the road and the air ambulance was attending. I've ridden it plenty of times before the draconian limits - the best ride was on a Honda Blackbird, it just suited those long sweepers perfectly...
I was hoping for a Jag Coup update today but this is not a disappointment at all. Brilliant car in a gorgeous colour and great road trip as always. Super enjoyable riding 'shotgun' with you.
I am a Brit living in Sydney. We go to Baden Baden every year for a blast on the roads around Baden Baden. At the Avis there you can rent a 911 quite easily and relatively cheaply. We've done that 3 times now. The B500 itself is not too good, especially with the daft new restrictions, but the side roads (including those at the Baden Baden end) are amazing. That speed camera has been there at the bottom of the hill for years FYI. The side roads down and up the valleys are the places to go. They are quiet and you can drive in a spirited fashion. Plus a side trip to the Porsche museum at Zuffenhausen or the Technik Museum at Sinsheim (planes and automobiles). If you really want to treat yourself try Brenners in Baden-Baden, one of the best hotels globally IMHO. We cannot wait to get back there again.
I’ve done that journey up from Freiburg to Baden Baden through the Black Forest, totally stunning and I agree with you about Baden Baden, it’s a fabulous little town, we’ve stayed many times. I do enjoy your road trips and especially this one as I’ve done it and can really appreciate your comments. Looking forward to your next one……omicron permitting 😉
Let’s face it Harry if you fall on hard times and have to downsize, the Project 7 and the Project 8 will give you thrills, excitement and practicality wrapped up in just two cars! Another fantastic road trip trio of videos, thanks for sharing 👍
You brought my youth back - born and raised in Boeblingen / Stuttgart the Schwarzwald was our playground in my youth. NSU TT or mark 1 Golf GTi anyone? Awesome memories and video - thanks!
This is what I meant when I commented in part 1. There is only one thing to do when it comes to the B500 - don't go on it. It's busy. Meanwhile there are countless of insane roads next to it. But I agree, the entire region is better in the South and stuff like the Schauinsland Road is fantastic. With even better roads closer to Switzerland. It's a fantastic driving region while my home roads are still closed.
Harry for your next visit in my neighborhood: Southern Black Forest is fantastic - u should try the routes from Freiburg to the Bodensee. I particularly like the Höllental route, but you basically can take any of the smaller roads down here. Just avoid the B31. Or as an alternative in the northern part of the Black Forest there is a small town not far away from Baden Baden called Bad Herrenalb all routes to Bad Herrenalb are quite nice. But truly epic is the follwing route: Stay overnight in Baden Baden take the L79 up to Bermersbach and from there the Kreisstraße to Langenbrand, in Langenbrand there is a bit of a boring part along the B462 till Hilpertsau and just before entering Hilpertstau you take a right into L76b till the Skilift Kaltenbronn. That route won't disappoint as long as you do not take it on a weekend. All of the Black Forest ist run over by hordes of cyclist, wanderers and idiots on motorbikes that actively try to kill themselves in there free time. Personally i have the most fun during summer with the convertible at night. The twists and turns are far more excitung at night and you have the roads pretty much to yourself. Start at 3o'clock and arrive in Kaltenbronn at dawn - life hardly gets any better.
Dear Harry, A note on the "Tempo 30" in German cities: very often you find a "22 - 6 h Lärmschutz" underneath the sign, which means that you only have to drive 30kph at night, so the people may sleep. During the daytime in these areas, you should go 50kph. I dont know if you knew this, but seeing you use footage from such a "Lärmschutz" zone while talking about "30 in cities", i figured it might be worth pointing out. But dont confuse them with the "7-17h" signs! Those are in school zones, and they mean that you have to drive 30 during the daytime to protect the schoolchildren. Just look at the indicated hours :)
gotta take the rough with the smooth, Harry. Gotta take the 200mph with the 50kph! Never driven in Germany so it was all new to me. It does look good, mist notwithstanding. Also, thumbs-up for big, paper maps!
I'm so glad I have seen that Schau-insland (apparently) hillclimb. My father and grandfather raced sidecars up it in the 1950s. I have the big cuckoo clock (prize they got for winning it) too. There's also the old Saarland Grand Prix circuit somewhere around there if I remember rightly. But thanks Harry, that's really ticked off a bucket list thing for me. They used to coast back down it too apparently!!
Thierry Bollore, the worst automotive CEO, threw the entire Jaguar brand under the bus. This is the pinnacle of Jaguar; an exciting saloon car that is both conformable and performance based. Exactly the history of Jaguar in one car - Project 8. Little wonder Julian Thomson walked...
Jaguar are in the business of selling cars. The XE has never sold in the numbers they wanted and neither did its predecessor the X Type. Thierry did exactly the right thing by taking Jaguar up market and ditching these entry level saloons. They didn't work in the early 2000s and they don't work now. I'm glad he's in charge because JLR was starting to morph into the Rover group focusing on volume and having a car in each category. Car makers thrive when they focus on their niche or core customer. It's only then they can truly make cars that people want. If JLR truly want to have a mass market presence without damaging the Jaguar brand then they could resurrect the Rover name and reintroduce as an extension of Land/Range Rover.
@@nudisco300 Yet the cars were profitable. Thierry threw the entire range under the bus, cancelled the replacement XJ citing it used old technology, yet that same platform is the basis of the new Range Rovers! Doesn't add up. Stating they're going full electric, but there's a long way to go between being full electric and where they are now with increased use of hybrid technology. And Jaguar have never used how advanced the I-Pace is in their marketing. And that is their current biggest failure - poor marketing. That's why Bollore is the worse automotive CEO, a surprise late entry taking that title away from Tobais Moers.
@@johnsim3722 U r talking so much BS. As per the other guy, XF and XE have lately only sold in very small numbers worldwide. SUV is all the rage, not 4 door sedan. XJ was (sadly) only going to sell in small numbers, so not worth going ahead with it. Jaguar total worldwide sales is minimal. 2018 - 180,800 2019 - 161,600 2020 - 102,500 ( Covid related fall ) I doubt they were profitable. Making ongoing losses is not sustainable. Everyone is going EV, and the R & D costs are huge. Jaguar only have 100,000 vehicles to amortise this cost. Thierry has made some very tough, but correct decisions. I’m a big Jaguar fan. So much great history and nostalgia value with the brand, but this does not pay the bills. I Pace is a great car. Jaguar have not done enough to promote this vehicle. As of 2025, all EV An EV E - Pace An EV F - Pace And an EV replacement for the F - Type. Make these cars very special and upmarket. And more expensive Overall total sales will be less than now, BUT profitable. Thierry is securing Jaguars ongoing viability and future.
@@StephenFogarty2023 I hope you're right. You may have missed that there won't be a selection of "Pace" cars, but only one. Bollore is going to remove the SUVs from Jaguar, the cars that have been selling best. XJ he's cancelling stating it's using old technology, but that is the basis of the new Range Rover which he was happy to go ahead with, and now you don't have shared costs. No other company is making this sudden switch to electric because there's a lot of life left in normal cars, a lot of infrastructure. As EV technology improves, and especially where it's needed in the battery department, it will be sensible to move products more towards electric, but that time isn't now. And it's not going to change in 2025 either. There has to be a transition through hybrid first.
@@johnsim3722 Hybrid has been around a long time EV technology improving so rapidly Compare a full EV 5 yrs ago to now, and imagine how much better it will be in another 5 years. Irrespective of what u say about the XJ It was not going to sell in meaningful numbers S class and 7 series dominate this space of the market. And sales of large luxury sedans is declining extremely rapidly, as people buy more Benz GLE / GLS BMW X5 / X7 Instead. Jaguar are a small niche company, so the plan Thierry unveiled makes a lot of sense.
1-2-3 excellent viewing across some beautiful scenery and the Project 8 performed great at 200mph on the surprisingly smooth surfaced Autobahn. German ingenuity; something to admire. I must say, the Project 8 looks & sounds similar to an Australian (GM-Holden) Commodore V8 ‘SuperCar’ as it heads down Conrod Straight at 300+kph during the annual Bathurst 1000 - enjoying your videos. May there be many more. Cheers🇦🇺👍
Hate it when what were once excellent roads become festooned with speed cameras enforcing a lower limit. The A48 from Gloucester to Chepstow was a favourite of mine as an alternative to the M50, then the cameras arrived and I haven't used it for years.
Talk about timing Harry! You got in an out just right. I suspect much of Europe will now lock down for a bit. Great trip, thanks for sharing your exploits with Australian-based viewers. Not the same over here sadly.
Another wonderful video Harry which I thoroughly enjoyed, I always feel very positive and greatly enthused about everything after watching your video adventures, thank you.
Been to the same area for a winter holiday two years ago. Triberg was a really busy town during Xmas before Covid. Under the stress of the crowd, my wife burned the clutch when driving the uphill.
I’m new to your channel and was interested in this trip to the Black Forest, I’ve lived in this region for over 30 years and you certainly picked the right road to drive. Unfortunately as someone has already commented the B 500 is now full of speed restrictions simply because many motorbike riders have been involved bad and fatal accidents. If you’re interested I have a small hotel just over the border from Strasbourg. I love the channel and keep up the good work!
All of my best road trips have been in Germany/Bavaria and Austria. Beautifully surfaced roads, stunning views and great food too! Germany is a country of curious contradictions as you say....amazing freedoms on stretches of Autobahns, but Teutonic control in other areas....they protect their equivalent of our National Parks, in a draconian manor. Amen to that I guess! Great coverage Harry.
I drive my P8 (almost) daily. Sold my 2018 RS6 Performance to my best friend and…. We love battling by the Northern Italy mountains on weekends. This Jag is probably born for the track but, engineered for the rallies. Therefore, a true killer in the secondary roads. Its quick release torque curve is just "sans pareil". Goodbye 911s, AMGs and other Salvation Army trumpeteers. Battle of Britain at its finest 🇬🇧🎖🎖🎖
Great tour and review Harry! What I do not understand is why still a “lot” P8 are for sale against market prizes (new!) which are almost 50% of the new prize.. dealer said to me that the market is zero for this car due to the prize and the fact nobody knows how special it is. Hope this video will give it a little boost so the community can grow 🚀🙃
As I mentioned in the video, they decided to go with out gas particulate filters in the exhaust, which became mandatory for all new EU cars in September 2018. This meant Jaguar could no longer sell the car in certain markets and deposits had to be returned to buyers. All these pre-ordered Project 8 ended up as orphan cars and eventually went on sale in the UK, where they could still be sold under single type approval. So sad really, if enthusiasts realised how special the Project 8 really is, there would be have been a queue around the block for it. In BMW terms it's an M3 fitted with the drivetrain out of the ultimate M5 CS. Just think how well that would have sold!
So love the inspiring content :). This trend of setting speed limits specifically to stop people enjoying roads (rather than for safety reasons) is very worrying. The evo route through the Brecon Beacons is a victim too (as im sure you know). Do any route planning apps allow you to select routes that are primarily de-restricted/nsl ??
I love this! your road trip videos are the best. With all the information, tips and tricks. And the love of cars...... if its a mini or a mcclaren! Keep up the good work
7:46 this Is funny for me to watch 😅 I live close enough to this area to call all of this area my motorcycle home turf. Actually the B500 is the bit that you should avoid. Not only because of the speed limit, but also because the B500 is the broadest and most straight street in this region. Suitable to drive big RVs, not so much for having driving fun 😎
Having the XE2.0 i, the mind boggles at the performance of the Project 8. Love mine. This year did Chartres, Verteillac and back for a couple of days at Le Touquet. Lot of Seagull poo on my car.
I’m sorry you had such a poor experience in the black forest and on the 500 Harry. I did it a few years ago in a Jaguar XKR, it was sunny and there was no traffic what so ever, it was a fabulous drive and the only cars we did spot we enjoyable overtaking targets. We were on our way back from the Italian GP in Monza, a trip that took in the Ferrari Museum & Factory (where we saw Luca de Montezemolo by chance), the Mille Miglia museum, the Imola track and Ayrton Senna Memorial and all of the famous alpine passes you can eat. But somehow the blast through the Black Forest was the highlight of the trip. I think you need to go back. In the summer. On a mid week day! PS thanks for the great content!

Thanks. You partly inspired me to do the Alps in October. Loved Switzerland, Italy and Austria. Germany was OK, but generally more traffic and trucks. Great adventure though.
Great video Harry, real shame that that road had been ruined. I can actually appreciate strict speed limits in towns and unrestricted big roads compared with the bizarre constantly changing variable speed limits in the UK I'd definitely take it.
We have periods where I am that you don’t see the sun for weeks because of low cloud cover. To get your sun fix you have to go up above 1000m for a walk in the sun.
As you say that we are at an 'end of a line era' I would safely say that collectable "ICE" cars are only going one way in value. And that's up! Harry, you've got some real good investments in your garage!
Great trip. We must all tuck away a few V8's while we still can. Always loved those Jag super V8's. I must have done 150k+ miles with them. Off to Autotrader...cheers Harry.

This was a great series thanks Harry. I love the practical yet insanely fast cars. The Project 8 is fantastic.
Schwarzwaldhochstraße, i've driven it on my motorcycle in 2017, 2019 and this year. A great road
Really liked the POV shots when mobbing. The fog added a nice ambiance.
Thanks Harry great viewing
Let’s face it Harry if you fall on hard times and have to downsize, the Project 7 and the Project 8 will give you thrills, excitement and practicality wrapped up in just two cars! Another fantastic road trip trio of videos, thanks for sharing 👍
Get yourself to Trento in north east Italy, the Trento-Bondone hillclimb, still on the FIA calender is an awesome road and Trento is a beautiful city
You brought my youth back - born and raised in Boeblingen / Stuttgart the Schwarzwald was our playground in my youth. NSU TT or mark 1 Golf GTi anyone? Awesome memories and video - thanks!
Surely the fastest car with a heated windscreen...such an underrated gadget? Awesome video as usual Harry.
Dear Harry,
A note on the "Tempo 30" in German cities: very often you find a "22 - 6 h Lärmschutz" underneath the sign, which means that you only have to drive 30kph at night, so the people may sleep.
Great fun on 2 wheels and the restaurant by the lake is fantastic
gotta take the rough with the smooth, Harry.
That color is alluring….works nice with the gold rims
@@johnsim3722
U r talking so much BS.
As per the other guy, XF and XE have lately only sold in very small numbers worldwide.
SUV is all the rage, not 4 door sedan.
XJ was (sadly) only going to sell in small numbers, so not worth going ahead with it.
Jaguar total worldwide sales is minimal.
2018 - 180,800
2019 - 161,600
2020 - 102,500 ( Covid related fall )
I doubt they were profitable.
Making ongoing losses is not sustainable.
Everyone is going EV, and the
R & D costs are huge.
As of 2025, all EV
An EV E - Pace
An EV F - Pace
And an EV replacement for the
F - Type.
Make these cars very special and upmarket.
And more expensive
Overall total sales will be less than now, BUT profitable.
@@johnsim3722
Hybrid has been around a long time
EV technology improving so rapidly
Compare a full EV 5 yrs ago to now, and imagine how much better it will be in another 5 years.
Irrespective of what u say about the XJ
It was not going to sell in meaningful numbers
S class and 7 series dominate this space of the market.
And sales of large luxury sedans is declining extremely rapidly, as people buy more
Benz GLE / GLS
BMW X5 / X7
Instead.
Brilliant vid and series. Just got some winter tyres to take my old Skoda to the far side of Germany for Crimbo - super excited - I hate flying!
Great video. I was lucky enough to ride the B500 in both directions on my KTM 1190 Adv back in 2017. Loved it. Brings back happy memories 🙏👍🏼
Been to the same area for a winter holiday two years ago.
Triberg was a really busy town during Xmas before Covid.
Under the stress of the crowd, my wife burned the clutch when driving the uphill.
Baden-Baden is my preferred region for a stop over on the way to Switserland. the B-500 is an awesome hill-road through the Black-forrest.
Love this style of videoHarry …similar to f12 to vineyard …p8 is a gem …and bonus F40 too …enjoy the clock 😀
I love Via Michelin too and have used it on several long continental trips too; like yourself on the phone mainly.
That’s one of my preferred roads in the Black Forest. Found the best spot. Congrats. 👍🏻👍🏻
Anyone who wanted to buy one will certainly know what it is, its just not a"favoured" model. Horrendous depreciation.
It's a phenomenal car with its pace.
Shes a keeper harry dont let it go ....
Stunningly beautiful automobile. I can’t imagine e you could ever replace this. Keep for life vehicle.
Evening all, thanks for the content Harry. 👍🏼
Great episode and I’ve loved driving across Europe in cars and motorbikes.
Really enjoyed all the videos, giggle factor has got to be the best way
to describe the project 8. For me it is one of the best car’s you own.
Cheers Harry keep up the good work 👍🚙
Noooo don't sell the project 8 Harry! Awesome video series Harry thank you for sharing!
Again another great roadtrip video from Harry
I drove the same stretch of road in the black forrest two months ago
V nice final road trip part. And totally agree, viaMichelin is superb when planning a trip, includes all the toll costs, fuel costs etc based on your car. Highly recommended. Oh and cuckoo clocks are cool...esp the ones with the echo in the forest sound. 😉
Fantastic mini series of videos Harry. I am looking forward to the next one. Would be interesting to see you buy a car for 5k and drive it to a destination. It would’ve a great aspirational video for your audience to demonstrate you can enjoy this type of motoring on a budget
I’ve only just realised that the P8 is left hand drive, which is handy.
Another beautiful part trip!!!
If I am not mistaken, you have also visited Switzerland
Fantastic brilliant entertainment if I ever put my Shadow 2 back on the road thats the trip I'd put on the bucket list
THANKS for sharing a Continental Road Trip Adventure with us! I would have enjoyed it every bit as much with a less powerful vehicle, given the speed and fog limitations.
Reminds me of the Malverns near the Herefordshire Worcestershire borders..😊
I did find the same with the top part of the b500 but some of the side roads are amazing.
