La morfología de la espada condicionó su uso, aunque no su longitud, ya que desde mediados del siglo XVI, en 1564, la ley establece que las hojas de las espadas no pueden superar las 5 cuartas de vara ( unos 104cm), longitud esta recomendada por los maestros de la escuela, coincidiendo en parte con el famoso creador de una variante, Girad Thibault, para el que la hoja de la espada debía llegar al ombligo de un hombre bien proporcionado, siendo esta la misma proporción que observa la ley (y la escuela de la Verdadera Destreza) sólo que en referencia a lo que considera el hombre ideal, proporcionado y con una estatura de 2 varas castellanas ( unos 167cm.). Esta era, en teoría, la media de la estatura.
Un autor tardío, Miguel Pérez de Mendoza, nos dice en “Resumen de la Destreza” (1675) que las espadas deben tener esas 5 cuartas de vara, pero si les faltan 2 dedos (unos 3´4cm.) no importa pues también son buenas.
Estas leyes estarán vigentes durante toda la vida de la escuela.
En cuanto a las guarniciones de este perído inicial, no hay una diferencia morfológica significativa con el resto de las naciones europeas.
