I was a priest in the British army chaplains corps and eventually ended up with the para regiment. To maintain fitness and our jump qualifications we had to take part in various jump exercises. Considering my main task was the spiritual welfare of the army personnel on base and during training exercises, thus been a part time para was a second. One year whilst out on one of these famed exercises in Wales, I had come across some lads who invited me for a beer and a jump with them. I found out a few days later that these lads were from the SAS also taking part in the exercises. Long story short. I did a jump with them and as usual I would say prayer and afterwards one of the lads came up to me and said, “don’t worry father, we already have wings so we are going in the right direction.” 😊😊 Remarkable lads they were. Truly remarkable. I am 65 years old now and out of the army, but still remember those lads.

I can't recall who said it but the most amusing response I have heard in a documentary was when a SAS veteran was asked if he was on the Iranian Embassy job in 1980; he replied "No, but I've met 3000 people who were." Referring, of course to the number of wannabe's out there. Well done guys and thank you for your service.

A part from their massive back muscles - they looked just like any other soldier. SFs is a young mans game.

Doing that would change the whole vibe of the unit. You volunteer for the SAS because it looks interesting, you like adventure and because you believe in what you are doing... idealistic.

How can we accept anything we have ever been taught or led to believe as fact. Here's a fact, imagine how lucky you are, in some countries if you own a TV you by law (prison time if you get caught) have to pay a government tax for a licence that pays for the state broadcaster, then the news is also dictated by the government and countless times has been found to be aware that what they are reporting is incorrect. I worked with someone who served 6 years with 22SAS. The fact that I grew up in Hereford probably helped him relate to me a bit and he did say a few interesting things, aside from swearing at me in Arabic if I screwed up!
He got badged on his second attempt at selection. He said it drains you, you get to a point on the Welsh hills when your body does not want to go on and you have to find something inside to make you continue putting one foot in front of the other. He fought in Oman in the 1970s and was flown out a few days before his daughter was born. He did not see her until she was nearly 4 months old. He said the SAS was no place for a married man. He also did a bit of body guarding for various heads of state (mostly Arabic as he spoke the language) on their visits to the UK.
He could have stayed with the SAS longer but went back to the Paras as he spent so much time abroad he was missing his family grow up.
