  • Many times spacers and adapters get stuck on your camera gear. I've found myself using pliers or vise grips to remove spacers, only to end up damaging my equipment. Now you can save that $40 spacer with a $15 tool! Yes, Rubber Strap Wrenches are the solution! Check out this video and see how I removed stubbornly stuck spacers.

    I just unlocked my fiance's spacers using my workout elastic band thanks to your video😆 I've never seen him so proud of me. Thank you so much!!!!

      Excellent! Glad the Elastic bands worked! I'm proud of you too! Good way to improvise with what you had.

    Your timing is perfect. Thanks. Recd them and it worked on spacer and a stuck m42-48 adapter and my gatorades. Pickles are next. Thanks again

    I have to admit, I was skeptical. I have had this stuck stuff before, and it's a BEAR.
    And my stuck things (a 5mm extender on a Starizona Filter Holder) were way different diameters. I used a big strap wrench and a small one. I thought it would fail because one wrench seemed to get in the way of the other one. But I soldiered on for several minutes. I for a few seconds got the correct position and "Click"!! It was off.
    Thanks for your video, I honestly don't think anything else would have worked, and yes, in the past, I have scratched up stuff very noticeably trying to get them unstuck. Pretty cool.

      Great News Paui! It's so satisfying once that "click" happens and your adapters are free! BTW, these work great for removing stubborn canning lids too. My wife uses them as do I! I ruined plenty of adapters using pliers and vise grips. So glad I found these tools.

    Solved it! Take the stuck adapters and place on a rubber surface (outdoor steps, the sole of a shoe). Take a shoe with a rubber sole and press down while turning. Pops off super easy.

      You said you broke the straps Tom at first? Wow! That's a tight adapter! Good idea and suggestion to use a rubber surface (shoe) to help remove, thanks for sharing! Doug

    I didn’t have time to buy one of these but I had an old usb cable which I put around the adapter and twisted it and it worked! Anything that has rubber and fits around the filter that you can hold the ends of will do the trick

      THANK YOU Eileen! I had a stuck filter on an adapter I was trying to remove and thought I'd never succeed. The grippers will no doubt work, but reading this, found some dual core speaker cable that was the same depth as that worked a treat. Also just tried a cat5 cable that was a bit rubbery and that worked great as well. Getting a near all round grip makes all the difference, helping seat properly and remove. Again thanks!

    I always use Latex gloves on my stuck adapters. So far I was lucky enough not needing anything else. But, hey, one day you may need these strap wrenches. Great tip!

    • @Myastroimages
      @Myastroimages  7 лет назад

      Good alternative Ian! Latex gloves may work. Some of mine have been on their so tight, they seem impossible to move. The first one I illustrated was on their SUPER tight. Plus the smaller adapter ring had a razor like edge. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Good tip. Thanks. Smearing a tiny amount of grease (using a cotton bud) on the adaptor threads also helps prevent stuck elements.

      I've always been scared of any lubricants around my optics. All it takes is one tiny spot to ruin your optics coatings. Thanks for sharing your experiences and I appreciate your suggestion!

      I'm with Doug on this one. I'm afraid to use grease for the exact same reason.
      I've been using vice grips for a while - and I can't begin to count how many stuck spacers I've destroyed!
      I stumbled upon this video just because it showed up on my home page - and holy crap! I think you've just save me a bunch of money in the future! Thanks for sharing this overlooked, but obvious solution to a problem that's been a huge thorn in my side for years!

      It's one of those annoying tasks you don't do too often, but, for $15 I've already saved that in time alone. Another person suggested using the strap wrenches to open pickle jars. Now my wife uses it to open jars too. Very handy tool to have around the home.

      You made me laugh! O well...Next time you'll be able to give it a try. I don't think you can do it with ONE strap wrench, definitely need two strap wrenches if you have two spacers stuck together. Thank you for sharing and making me smile!

      Astrophotography Tutorials for sure. This time though it was a spacer attached to a larger diameter ES field flattener adapter that I could hold onto easily. live and learn 😂

    use a hair dryer on the hottest setting on one spacer. you can also put it in the fridge to cool it down first then use the hair dryer to heat one side up while the other side is still cold. this has never failed me and is a lot less aggressive.

      I haven't tried that method. I'll try to give it a try next time. The rubber strap wrenches sure do work.

    Awesome tip, thanks! I destroyed a 200 dollar filter once, not even by accident by I just couldn't get it off my corrector anymore (I tried everything up to the rubber mat thing). This might have saved it, so I might just order them.

      You'll know when it's time. Heck, Jeff told me about rubber strap wrenches almost a year ago, but, I didn't purchase them until I needed them. So glad I did because I saved money!

    My 2'' diagonal sct adaptor ring is stuck to the back of my C9.25. I'm not sure if these will work with the focuser knob in the way.

      If you can grip it with your fingers, then these should work to remove it. These bands don't take up much room and you don't need to fit the entire band across the fitting. Good luck!

    Very cool trick! I just use some WD40 and a piece of cloth for extra grip and it works most of the time.

    • @Myastroimages
      @Myastroimages  7 лет назад

      The WD40 is dangerous around optics. Before the rubber strap wrenches, I would use soap and water. But, that would only work on spacers only.
      Thank you for watching and commenting your experiences.

      Yes it kind of is and I wouldn't use it for optical components either. They don't seem to get stuck as much. I have the biggest problem with step up and step down rings bonding together. They are the hardest to separate because you don't have a big enough surface to grip onto. Also strap-wrenches are hard to get here.

    • @Myastroimages
      @Myastroimages  7 лет назад

      The first example I did was step up ring and it had an almost razor thin edge. The strap wrenches grabbed with no problem. Too bad you can't order these online.

    I use a heat gun and then the pieces will just come apart by hand. I wouldn't recommend using this method on any piece that has an optical element inside it, like a reducer.

    • @Myastroimages
      @Myastroimages  7 лет назад

      Don't you think heat could possibly loosen optical coatings as well? Thank you for your suggestion Jamee.
      Doug

    • @JameeDoni
      @JameeDoni 7 лет назад

      Like I said, don't use heat on any pieces that have an optical element in it.
      In your video you were using strap wrenches on 2 spacers that the heat method probably would've worked on. Sometimes you may even have to put ice on one of the stuck adapters while heating up the other one - so one shrinks a little and the other expands a little.

    • @Myastroimages
      @Myastroimages  7 лет назад

      Good approach, heat/Cold. Never know when you might need to use that technique. Good to know. Thank you!
