Fun fact: the show had a relatively low budget. It cost around 28 millions to produce, which compared to the 80 millions The Witcher had, you could say they did an amazing job!

I would say the cgi is actually really great! In shadow and bone I mean. The Witcher didn’t have the best cgi though if that’s what you mean… even though their budget was a lot more

I ended up reading the books after being introduced to the story through the show. But I am right there with you! I have my fingers crossed that Netflix adapts the book to include a redemption arc for the darkling, because the books broke my heart.

I really get your 'concern' about Kaz, I felt the same way but since it's a prequel to SoC the showrunner actually said (if I recall this corectly) that 'our Kaz' just needs a bit more time to come forth so I am literally praying for more seasons >•>

It’s perfectly fine to enjoy the villain in the story, even to consider him hot, while still standing for positive morals and values in real life. I know this wasn’t happening here, but I get so sick of fandom police who want to tell other fans that they must be horrible individuals if they like a villain or morally grey character in stories or movies.
The reason why showKaz was different was bc this season was before he turned as ruthless as how he was in the books

@Jenna Marshall I felt the same when watching the scene and I think they had that scene to introduce Rollins and hint a little at Kaz's backstory
I think that he's still ruthless but we didn't get to see it as much yet, bc he could tell from his own instinct and Inej's that Alina is a good person and isn't a fraud. so he didn't want to pursue it anyway and risk losing Inej. but he's still known as Dirtyhands and the Bastard of the Barrel in the show as well so I can't wait to see him outsmart a wealthy merch and gouge an eyeball or two 🔪 I agree that his interaction with Pekka Rollins did light his revenge fire though and get him on the track to taking him down 😈

Eric Heisserer has stated that we will get to see book Kaz. But since this is a prequel they are slowly building up his character. There is still some way to go, before we get to the Kaz we see in the books, and Season 2 will probably explain how he gets to join the Dregs. Again according to Eric :)

Agreed. The writers for the show missed out on Kaz's signature sarcasm. Freddy's acting was spot on but the more I think about it, the more differences I see between Kaz's style in the books compared to the series. Maybe it could be because this takes place before six of crows and he's gradually growing into that persona from the books.
But I do hope that we get to see Kaz's persona from the books more in season 2.
@@kevinkelly_ Remember That a Lot of People haven't read the books if Kaz was a heartless murdering criminal who didn't show an ounce of emotion or compassion no one would root for him because unlike the Books the Series doesn't allow you to hear Kaz is thoughts.
I'm suspecting that because this Alina kidnapping job did not work out Kaz's reputation suffered so maybe in season 2 we will see him unleash the true Dirtyhands so he can intimidate all his enemies.

Remember this is a prequel, the Kaz we saw in the show is not the same from the book, they did this to have some character development so it’s understandable

ok so, in the books, Mal and Alina had more bro and sis vibes as far as Mal was concerned. And Mal actually slept with Zoya in the beginning and did nothing to hide the fact. He had no romantic interest in Alina until the Darkling wanted her. But I had a feeling they would make Mal more likable in the show. Team Darkling for life!
@UThink UCan I've never read the books and I'm curious of what qualities people don't like about him? I'm team darkling and am hoping for a redemption arc, I just felt like Alina and mal didn't have that powerful romantic connection like she did with the darkling.
@@Fartmachine865I read the books a few years ago so I don't remember a lot of details, but one of the things that bothered me the most was his reaction to Alina after finding her in the Little Palace. In the books if you don't use/suppress your powers, it affects your health negatively. Alina always looked sickly and had trouble sleeping so, naturally, she looked happier and healthier after using her powers. As far as I can remember, he was really angry because he had done so much for her and she was having a great time in the palace. Also, he didn't really care for her like in the series, he just realized that he liked her after she left and sometimes it came across as being possessive.
Personally, I didn't like the fact that the health aspect wasn't included in the show, because she didn't use her powers in the second book and it affected her again. And Mal's reaction to that gave off "don't worry, I still like you like that" vibes💀
I feel the same way like there’s just no romantic connection and it’s kinda weird sometimes-
I felt the same way about Kaz, but I seen a few people mention that this is like a prequel in a sense for SoC, so he might still be getting his footing, which I could kind of see, so maybe as they get more season he'll start becoming like the Kaz in the books more.
Ye that would make sense if that’s the case! So hopefully we get more book Kaz in the next season!

They wouldn’t have had as big of a budget if they had the original 10 episodes, but for the 8, they wanted it to look really good to build the world and whatnot. With much success 😁
I never read any of the books i just saw Ben Barnes in the casting and played it lmao i then proceeded to binge watch the show in less than a day and now im watching it for the second time and have my mom watching it with me and she and my dad like it very much!
Fun fact: Milo is mentioned in crooked kingdom as a “member of the dregs”. You can find him at the end with the characters

I am soooo just like you about team darkling\team mal stuff! Like I love them BOTH and no one can stop me. The show also turned me into such a huge Darkling stan, I liked him more in the show than in the books because Ben Barnes is just perfect and he portrayed him so so well and made him feel so human. Like how am I supposed to hate him when he spent half the season on the verge of tears? lmaooo No but even when I read the trilogy this was one of those rare occurrences where I'm literally happy with Alina ending up with either one of them because both ships offer so much romantic goodness for completely different reasons. I love your reaction, I feel you so much cause big same on all your feelings while watching. I hope season 2 isn't too far awayyyy!

Team Darkling. I love and appreciate the way the show gave Mal a personality and a backstory. And they're working hard to build True Love Meant For Each Other stuff with Alina. But I cant deny the searing my soul chemistry with Alina and The Darkling. Mal cant relate.

I read the Grisha books recently and the producers of season 1 did a GREAT job, the scenes, the conversations, everything is sooo similar to the books. Honestly one of the best adaptations i've ever seen. Can't wait for season 2 😭💗
About Kaz, I felt the same but quickly realized, as you said, that the show does focus on the shadow and bone storyline, at least in s1, and they probably wants to keep it all well guarded for when they bring up the soc storyline. Also that might be personal but I did really like seeing Kaz completely out of his depths when it came to grisha powers etc. It’s not his world at all and I thought it was logical to see him struggle in it. But yeah they really teased us with that scene where he breaks that guy’s hand jschsnd i was like hello book!kaz enchanted to meet you

If man evil why hot? that's what everyone seems to think about the Darkling and I stand by it too. I watched the show before I read the shadow and bone books (I had only read the SoC duo at the time) and I'm so glad with what the show did with Mal. In the books he was just a prick with the charm of a wet sock.

The Darkling might be twisted, but he cares a lot about grisha. Everything he does is to protect them. He got the right spirit, he just needs to figure out that grisha can be protected without murdering everyone, lmao. I cross my fingers that they make Darklina endgame the way they deserved, and that they give the Darkling the character development, we know he has buried inside.
If you're already torn between Mal and the Darkling, just wait until you meet Nikolai in season 2 😂 Btw you should read King of Scars, I think you'd really enjoy Zoya and Nikolai.

I really loved the adaptation, I love how they really took in the criticism for the trilogy and improved a lot of things. I never was fully invested on Mal and Alina as a couple in the books, bit in the show they did so well at showing there are feelings from both sides since the beginning. I agreed with your thoughts on Kaz not being fully our Kaz yet, but I think they made it on purpose, since this is before SoC. We can see Inej growing to be the assassin with a heart that we know and love, so think the same will happen to him.
Ye I loved Mal and Alina in the show! Ye i think that’s definitely what they’re doing for this season, so hopefully season 2 we’ll get the Kaz we know and love!!
I watched the show first and am now reading the book and i feel like now i am so glad that i did that because it has made reading the books so much better and more entertaining.
I have read the whole shadow and bone trilogy and absolutely love nikolai and have gone from a darklina to malina throughout the three books and am now on the six of crows book page 322 and am following along with your video and it is so fun going through the emotions with you and i am trying to prepare for crooked kingdom and then i will read the king of scars duology for miss nina

Man, you were in the *exact* same boat as me in going into the show with reading the first Shadow and Bone a long time ago and reading Six of Crows + Crooked Kingdom. Like I legit hardly remebered anything about Alina and them and just screamed whenever the crows were on screen lmao
I think for Kaz they wanted to rein it back a bit just for not making the show too bloody, and making people like his character. Of course they most would like him anyway, but for people who haven't read the books it would be harder to like him if he literally ripped a guy's eye out like he does in the book. Hopefully as they go forward there will be more of an opportunity for him to be more brutal, but overall I thought he was amazing!! And I CAN'T wait to see his backstory.
The storyline and relationships between characters were so accuratelly adapted!! I would even go as far as to say that both groups coming together brought a whole new depht to the overall plot. Not to mention the irrevocable chemistry between the actors. The seem to have had so much fun playing their characters!! Ps. I'm in love with Ben Barnes as well 😍😍

I was watching this with my sister and some other friends who haven't read the books and when Ketterdam was first introduced I did exactly what you did - started shushing everyone even though I was the only one talking and explaing the world's back story 😂😂

The crows storyline in the show was basically supposed to be a prequel to 6 of crows. According to Lee and the writers - that’s why Inej had her first kill on the show (instead of being a badass assassin like the books), and Kaz not quite being as brutal yet. And it showing Nina’s story that happened before the 6 of crows book. There have actually been whispers of The Crows getting a full spinoff series. Which I’d love..but I’m not sure the full series can be carried by the sun summoner storyline. Though I do have to say the show did a better job with that storyline than the books did, IMO. (Which I think is one of the only times I can say a visual media did better than the original books).

I Agree 100%, but I think the reason the watered-down Kaz's character is that he would be more ruthless than the darkling and they didn't want to portray him as a villain. And obviously, they were setting up his relationship with the crows and they wanted him to be a leader but also as a friend not so intimidating

@@kevinkelly_ Yes absolutely. The Grisha trilogy is a bit too young adulty (too much annoying teenage love struggles) for my taste but good to get to know the world. But my true love lies with the six crows! Every. Single. One!
