I started collecting laserdiscs in January and I have around 350 now. I'm using a projector to a 100" screen in a dedicated retro movie room in my house. Really enjoying this format and collecting them! Love music lasers. Especially concerts and specials like the Grammy's Vol 1 and 2.

I never had a laserdisc growing up, so I was never able to experience how Star Wars looked on the format. However, my first time viewing Star Wars wasn't even on VHS. It was on an old CED (Capacitance Electronic Disc), which looks like a giant floppy disc, in 1994 (yes, my family still had a CED player at the time and it still worked) and the picture was 4:3. Still, that didn't take away from the sheer awe and epic scope of the film. From the first bit of music in the text crawl, to the award ceremony at the end, I was mesmerized by the experience and my love for the saga was born. After that, I was able to get the "One Last Time" VHS set (4:3) in 1995 and finally watch the rest of the films. I wouldn't get to own the films in widescreen until the DVD release in 2004. Before then, the only way I had been able to see the films in widescreen was the theatrical release of the special editions.

I still have my machine and a pretty big collection. The main reason we purchased this machine to begin with. We knew someone in RCA and got a good deal and it was Stereo a year before VHS became Stereo. And like listening to vinly. The sound that came out of the Stereo System playing Star Wars or any BLUE sleeved disc was amazing. My machine still works and often come across disc here and there for the cheap, so I grab them. Good times, good memories. I will never forget hearing Theatre Sound at home with the RCA Selectavision Disc Player. I also was able to grab and own a laser disc player, still working today, and have the Star Wars Definative Collection which came with a hardcover book and cost around $300 Canadian at the time. It had Extras and all in CAV. Star Wars on CED was aroung $40, Empire was $40, and Return Of The Jedi was Two Discs and cost $50. - Toronto, Canada.

@@mikekaye3874 That's awesome that you still have a player. Unfortunately, our CED player was trashed when our old home was cleaned out after we moved. Still, I had some fun memories with it. My CED copy of Star Wars sadly stopped working before then, which is why I got the "One Last Time" VHS set as a gift.

Your videos and Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader’s inspired me to get into laserdisc. I love 4K Bluray but the constant changing of colour grades and sound mixes of my favourites was getting annoying so nice have alternative.
The Region 1 DVD of Akira from 2001 from Pioneer had the production report in English and also the one on the sound. It’s the most English friendly extras laden set of the film. It was the 2nd DVD I imported after T2.

Oliver. Big Fan of your work, but have never seen you before, or knew you had video's of you displaying your collection. But appreciate and undersand the type, and time of work it takes to create, edit, write, your videos. And they are some of the best on youtube IMO. Even when you have given us a separate link to watch a full edit video without any RUclips issues, if I'm not mistake? I really appreciate it. I'm thinking I should dig deeper into your pages history of videos. Thanks. - Toronto, Canada.

The Arrival got a very limited release in the UK.
I watched it at the Prince Charles Cinema.
Prior to the screening they made an announcement.
“Through no fault of the cinema , unfortunately Charlie Sheen appears in this film , we apologise for the inconvenience “

  • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader

Excellent finds. The letterbox NSNA is my go to version and has easily the best audio presentation. Sadly The Killer is still arguably best on the criterion release due to the rights hell the films are stuck in. The mono pcm is the best known to exist for the film.
The JSC Star Wars trilogy is a must and the best quality overall on the format for ESB and ROTJ. Only the Technidisc repressing of Star Wars outdoes the JSC. The masters were reused for the USA Fox initial letterbox releases and in spite of CLV they come pretty close but are still behind the JSCs.
    Space…what is space?😂😂

Hey there Oliver, great stuff as always. Tip, if you want to remove stickers, get lighter fluid. No joke, I have used it on my Retro Star Wars figures to get rid of the Retro sticker and although it looks scary at first as it soaks into the cardboard it dissipates and leaves no trace.

Some excellent finds there Oliver. I just realised I haven’t bought any for nearly two years now, I think it could be because I do have the majority of the titles that I was after when I got into the format. But recently I’ve had no desire to pick up anymore, although I still have some holy grails but they are proving very hard to find for a reasonable price.

When you watch your laserdiscs do you only watch them on modern displays via a scaler or do you watch them on a crt too? I have a great 4K oled and love watching 4K uhd films on it, but I’ve gone back to DVDs on my widescreen Sony CRT and they look really nice still. Don’t have any laserdiscs sadly as can’t find a player that won’t bankrupt me haha.

I use a modern TV with a separate scaler, as going straight into my TV will just give me the standard resolution of 480i. The scaler throws it up to 1080p without loss of detail.

Hey Oliver, can you confirm for me something, I have been telling people (I actually made the trivia on IMDB) that in the "Fake Vader" fight in ESB, that Darth Vader's light Saber was more orange as opposed to the red in the rest of the film when it is actually him, sort of hinting that it was not Vader fighting Luke on Dagobah. I remember this from the 80s VHS, but people say it was not the case, is it red or orange/red on the Laserdisc? Cheers.
