- Sir Geoff Hurst is with Jeff Stelling on the pod this week to talk about his greatest England matches.
They cover the 1966 World Cup, including the feisty win over Argentina, how he discovered he was playing ahead of Jimmy Greaves in the final, scoring the hat-trick against West Germany that made him a legend and which team-mate ended up in someone’s garden on the night they celebrated England’s men’s greatest ever success on a football field.
He also discusses what he believes is the worst decision ever in international football (no, not that one), why VAR makes him angry, almost joining Manchester United, walking football with Harry Kane and whether he thinks the current England side will win something in the coming years.
Football's Greatest is a Folding Pocket production with BBC Studios.

Who will be England's most important player at the upcoming European Championships? 🏆
Bellingham imo...A player who loves to perform on the big stage...plus his goals to add to Kane's will be crucial throughout the tournament...🏆🏴⚽️😍
Jude Bellingham 💯
Bellingham (or Foden)
He's one helluva player @@bantamNeil12

Super Spieler !!! Ich haben ihn im Oktober 1972 zusammen mit Gordon Banks als deutscher Austauschschüler
beim Spiel Spurs vs Stoke live spielen gesehen. Er war auch mit unserem WM Torwart Hans Tilkowski sehr gut befreundet.
What a great show and just how fit does he look at 82 years young
Great interview not keen on the host for some reason.
Looks like he could still put his boots on & play.
Keep your weight done, get lots of exercise, and nutritiously… and you have a chance of a long healthy life. Like Geoff Hurst.
Geoff Hurst, what a lovely man. Great interview.
Sir Jeff, was honoured to have an evening with you in Qatar. You look great mate, great to see you...COYI
Cannot believe he's 82. He looks in his 50's
Geoff looks good.
59th wedding anniversary. Congratulations. Thats a serious achievement
Germany's second goal!
No foul committed by Jack Charlton.
German hand ball from the resulting free kick.
And people say we cheated!
Jeff Hurst told me to piss off. No way can you say anything back to him. I respect him and admire him.
He looks really healthy and amazing for his age
He looks brilliant. Always a delight listening to him.
Well done Sir Geoff ....................last man standing . RIP all other 66 ers .
Geoff will always be a special man as he helped me recover after a burst appendix operation when I was 9 years old…
I was very poorly ( touch and go apparently ) my dad read that he was coming to my home town to open a sports shop.
He wrote to the shop and Geoff dropped off a personally signed picture and left it at the hospital reception ( as he had to get back to London ).
Imagine my reaction to receive this act of kindness….My mood changed, I recovered and finally got to thank Geoff personally at his theatre event when he did a sports evening at Cheltenham Town Hall.
An incredible, humble man who is always so modest when talking about his career.
Sir Geoff looks really well! He is so articulate and modest, too.
❤
Proper Player and Gentlemen.
NOT MODEST WHEN HE TALKS ABOUT THE 2ND GOAL TTO SAY IT CROSSED THE LINE IS JUST SELFISH LOOKING FOR FALSE GLORY
@@johnfarrell5075 He can only say what he saw, and Roger Hunt backs him up.
Sir Geoff with Sir Jeff nice
Jokes aside Sir Geoff your legacy will forever be legendary thanks for the England World Cup trophy Jules Rinet is still gleaming
Fully agree with Hursty that VAR is really really bad for the game of football! Hate it, hate it, hate it! Yes, some critical goals have been given thanks to VAR, but the stoppages disrupting the flow of the game are NOT worth it!
so you're essentially saying you would not change the maradona hand of god goal?
I think so yes. Tough call but how many goals are not disallowed and allowed using VAR that pundits scratch their heads over? Overall, far more problems caused by VAR than solved by it.
VAR is one of the best things introduced to football. It's some of the clowns monitoring it that makes it look bad.
They are worth it. Easily.
Hursty 😂
Gerry Coogan you are spot on great comment 2 goal hat trick are we the only 2 people in the British Isles who are aware that the ball NEVER EVER went over the line 😂😂😂😂
To Johnglott 9932: You shouldn't mix up the 1966s rules and situations with modern-day 2024 football.
No the worst decision in international football was when Lampard goal against Germany in the World Cup was disallowed as having not crossed the line, where in fact it was a good meter over.
Just a fantastic watch brilliant.
I'm English and even I admit it was never over the line Geoff, glad he gave it though.
Dear Mark 7823, You cannot compare 1966s rules and regulations to the modern 2024 era.
Sir Geoff never seems to age.
Lovely guy great stories, I forgive him for replacing my idol Jimmy Greaves in the 66 final. I own a replica shirt signed by Geoff
Jimmy Greaves certainly was phenomenal.
Up there with the best in the world.
Great upload 👍
Considering that the other 10 players from 1966 have now passed, Sir Geoff looks incredibly well.
Still talks well, great memory and clearly all the facilities are still there.
Good for another 20yrs
So good to hear Gareth Southgate get the praise he deserves from a true pro.
Woke prat
@timvella1817 thanks for introducing yourself to everyone.
@@timvella1817 You certainly are.

Time to get a new childish insult.
Great guest & a good speaker.
Unbelievable to think he made his debut in Feb of 66 then went on and won the world cup 5months later.
Enzo Fernandez made his full Argentina debut in the group stage and won the world cup 3 weeks later
Wonder if Jarrad Branthwaite could say the same about the Euros 😅
@@footballsgreatestpodno on 2 counts I believe
A truly great man
Legend and was bought up in Chelmsford 👏🏻
The only player in World Cup history to score a two-goal hat-trick.
Not what the record book shows. No penalties either.
Maradona came close.
@@steveg2479 Good point! A one-goal brace!
Are you Irish, Gerry by any chance? 😅😅😅
Not another bitter guy form other Shaws 🏴🇬🇧🏴🇬🇧🏴
If you don't like VAR then you must accept that the ball was over the line.
You can't have it both ways.
A hat trick in a world cup final at wembley for England and you get to lap Wembley at the end holding aloft footballs greatest prize.... does it get any better?...i bet even sir geoff cant believe that actually happened😂
Geoff Hurst played club football against Jack Charlton, Ron Yates, Brian Labone, etc., etc., etc.
No wonder all centre halves seemed as good as each other. They were.
Brilliant to see Sir Geoff Sharp as a button when there's a pall of Alzheimer's hanging over footballers from that time.
He knows that if VAR had been available in 1966 he wouldn't have been knighted.
Brilliant insight, Geoff Hurst's hatrick in a world cup final will never be surpassed, married for 59 years, today's social media viewers need to take note, different class back then.
My claim to fame , i was born in the same hospital as Geoff Hurst in Ashton under Lyne .
Bring back the old music!!
Unbelievable Jeff! Naming the England team that won 5-1 in Munich and not mentioning Steven Gerrard, even though he scored a cracking goal.
The reverence that that game is held on makes absolutely no sense to me. It was a qualifier. But you could DVD's of it in the shops 7 years later.
Should've recited the Ant & Dec lyrics
Surprised he never mentioned Alan Shearer, the best centre-forward England ever had.
Charlton was still on the pitch when Beckenbauer scored in Mexico ‘70.
The score was 2-0 to England when Bobby Charlton was substituted in 1970. So he couldn't have been on the pitch when West Germany scored their first goal. I saw it live on TV.
@@johnharrington501 I saw it live too, watch the tv coverage. Charlton was only a few yards away from Beckenbauer when he shot and scored Germany’s first goal. It’s a fact that has been misreported by journalists all these years…….So I’m sorry you are wrong my friend 😎

Well done Geoff. That is the most relaxed, honest and unguarded interview I have ever heard him give in 40 years.
Problem England had with Greaves is the bulk of his goals came in friendlies. Twenty-seven goals in friendlies, 13 goals in Home Championships and only four goals in European and World Cup qualifiers and finals (WC62-66; Euro64) and three of those were against Luxembourg in WC62 qualifiers.
Didn't know that. Very interesting.
Good point.
Maybe let the team managers decide if they want VAR before the match. If one decides for, have one half with VAR and one without.
Lol
Can tell Stelling doesn't like West Ham, Hursty, tells him two of the world cup goals were straight off the West Ham training ground & nothing LOL
When Sniffer Clarke was told he was making his debut ( vs the Cheks 70 - he scored the pen ) ĥe said I've been ready for 3 years - he was Imo and his England's Finest goal getter yet after scoring in his first 4 games he wasn't picked again until we slaughtered the Scots in their Centenary Game in Glasgow 0 - 5 in 73 Clarke got Two - my point he Should have replaced Mr Hurst at least after Mexico 70 W C .
Yes, very strange that Ramsey left him out for 2 years and he wasn't one of the boozers like Osgood, Worthington and Bowles etc. Martin Chivers was the natural replacement for Hurst.
Nothing wrong with VAR it’s the idiotic referees that are misinterpreting it that is the problem
"I was washing my car outside my house, which cost five grand"
Me: Hmm, that was quite a lot for a car in the 60s.
That was for the house not the car.
Does Sir Geoff still have the match ball?
No a German player grabbed it...then gave it to the FA 30 years later...think it might have been seeler that grabbed it
@@leeturton9254 Thanks Lee, shame Hurst didn’t get it but fantastic it’s with the FA who will hopefully display it for fans to see 👍👍👍
@@goodonedoo helmut haller grabbed the ball...he gave it to the sun newspaper in 1996 i believe who in turn gave to the f.a

Last living
Being 9 and watching on a 18" black and white TV was one of the great day's of my life and Mr Hurst was fantastic as were the whole team,
Well, it didn’t, did it.
The ball was never over the line .. Refereeing was poor 1970 wc quarter final West Germany I watched it England should have had pens. imho england will not win while fake..flakegate is manager,,, he had 2 chances to win yet his inept skills tactically cost the team
Completely agree, Trying to prove a point by letting those 3 take a penalty...his inept virtue signalling ruined it.
@@LordFlashheart.11 semi WC Russia He never had the conviction to tighten the defence 15 minutes from time while Kane labored up front Deli too. Kane missed chance to make it 2 in the first half .and the midfield run ragged . Grealish keeps hold of the ball Mary Pickford is a clown He likes his pets...Oh for Terry Venables

Moronic post
@@leeturton9254 Absolutely. These nasty little keyboard warriors can't accept that Southgate has generally done a great job, and I wouldn't want to pick a replacement.
Greaves should have played instead of Hunt
VAR is diluting the beautiful game
Legend is overused. But not in his case. A living legend. I was 8 years old in 66. What a day that was! Then 67, Celtic (my father was Scottish) and then 68, man utd and my hero George Best. I disagree with Hurst, england will not win a major trophy in my lifetime. Pampered prats, no hunger. 😢
IMHO England have not had a centre forward since Geoff, who made intelligent runs off the ball; was always available as a target and laid off quality balls, and on top of that scored goals consistently.
VAR is DISGRACEFUL,completely spoiled the game,again GUTLESS F.A 🥵🥵🥵🥵
Great guests shame about the host. Moyes OUT
See who gets you less points next season 😂
@@Popspicker Really need to advise you that as a West Ham fan since 1965, I only went for the entertainment, never for the points. Yes it is nice not to be relegated, but you know it will happen one day.
@@del8boy Yeah, get that, unfortunately for the also rans in football we'll never afford the top entertainers, you want to try being a Preston fan :-)
Absolutely nauseating, the cheats of 66, still desperately hanging on, thank goodness for the redemption of the lampard “goal”, and then there’s the yobs, West Ham yobs in 64, yobs in 66 and yobs in 2021, and the drunken English yobs in Spain every year, hiding under a Uk flag, then the cry babies to get rattin sent off, and Charltons toe-poke, they can only win at home cause they can’t travel. Favourites for 16 tournaments and two semis lol
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
You have got a problem. The ball was just over the line and it was known back then, but you have to see the high definition movie film from ground level looking straight along the line and not from an angle, which does exist but has rarely been shown in documentaries. You cannot make a decision based on the fuzzy black and white TV pictures that are always shown, as the image is just not clear enough.
Rattin had only himself to blame because he couldn't stop arguing with the referee.
I would agree that England were not the best team in 1966, however they deserved to win the final on the day, and any idea that tournament was fixed in their favour is frankly ludicrous and doesn’t bear scrutiny.
The host nation at a World Cup has always had an advantage, not only playing in front of the home crowd but also the pressure it puts on referees. I doubt whether West Germany in 1974 and Argentina in 1978 would have won the World Cup had they not staged it.
By the way there was no toe poke by Charlton.
It didn't go over the line.
