Great list! Fun year for horror fans and we're not even to spooky season! Just wanted to share a couple comments. I loved Immaculate up to the reveal. The reveal fell so flat and took me out of the movie. And I agree about trailers. Abigail, for example, could have been so fun if they left a little mystery or misdirected with the trailer. I still enjoyed it but the trailer stole all the opportunity to try and figure out the destination during the ride.

Alien Romulus was FANTASTIC!!!!! I'm certainly going to own it when it's available. I have all the others. I LOVED the nods and the respect they paid to all the other movies in the franchise as it "brought it all together"... I appreciated that. The thing I didn't like about the prequels is that they didn't FINISH it. They made two and we kinda see the beginning of the whole story and what the characters did to get the Xenomorphs to actually come into being. Also, the creation of the Engineers was a really "sci-fi" way of telling the story and I liked how they were making the weapon and then it turned into what they did. I just wanted the writers, producers and the powers that be to FINISH the prequel. How did the spaceship GET to LV-426? CLOSE but I wish they'd have finished. However, while Romulus didn't answer that, it paid respect to those two movies nicely. It was, in my honest, movie watchin', sci-fi lovin' opinion, the BEST Alien movie yet. I hope they keep it going. As always, great work, keep going.

Good video. I totally agree with you about Oddity. Without doubt Strange Darling is the best I've seen with Oddity close behind. I found Longlegs a huge let down, as was Alien Romulus. Late night with the devil was great fun. Still want to see Cuckoo, The Devil's Bath and others but considering it's only September, we've had some fine films with horror season still to come.

I thought Alien Romulus was awesome! I didn't like one or two of the very obvious callback lines, or the rendition of a certain character... But I'm quite forgiving of things like that. I think it's daft to let a couple of things you dislike colour your entire opinion of the film.

But lo and behold, First Omen is all of that and then some. Brilliantly done film.

Excellent review of an unusually good run of horror films! The First Omen has quickly become one of my favorite horror movies of all time (I'm hoping it gets a truly worthy prestige physical release sometime soon... and, I would be all in for a sequel, following Margaret, Carlita & the girl, especially if Arkasha Stevenson is once again at the helm!). I also thought Immaculate was a beautifully made film as well (and so far has my vote for best director's commentary of the year as well, for anyone deciding if they want to pick up the blu-ray). No, Longlegs wasn't "the scariest film of the decade" but it was fantastic, and I'm loving that Osgood Perkins is finally getting his due (I envy you getting to watch Blackcoat's Daughter for the first time, and discovering his other films). I'm definitely planning to check out Oddity soon. As for films not mentioned here, I had a of of fun with more "popcorn horror" like Abigail and Late Night with the Devil.
As for what's to come... I'm really looking forward to Heretic and, of course, Nosferatu(!).

So, a few things to say to the channel host.
I have not yet seen Longlegs, but I pre-ordered the 4K sight unseen. Pre-ordering a film sight unseen is something I pretty much never do these days due to most films being poorly written politicized propaganda disguised as "entertainment" that I wouldn't watch for free. Truth be told, I don't even buy movie tickets now for any films I might be interested in unless a source that I trust has first vetted them - meaning that I never see a film opening weekend nowadays (with rare exception - I did see two Japanese films on opening weekend, Godzilla Minus One and The Boy And The Heron, without consulting vetting resources because the Japanese entertainment industry hasn't yet at least succumbed to PC idiocy.) It's depressing that I have to do that, but it is what it is given the abysmal state of Hollywood in 2024. So, having said that...
I made an exception for Longlegs because of the director's body of work. You mentioned not having seen any of Oz Perkins' other films. I will say that, though not all three of his previous films are top shelf, all of them are good in some way. And his debut film, The Blackcoat's Daughter, is a flat out masterpiece - it was my top film of 2017, even above The VVitch, and is just excellent on so many levels. It is one of the most well written, well directed, atmospheric, and eerie films in the last decade.
You also mentioned that you appreciated the new A Quiet Place film because it was a character study. The Blackcoat's Daughter is very much a character study (among other things - it is also open to interpretation and offers excellent opportunity for the viewer to assign subjective meaning) wrapped in a decidedly creepy horror-themed shell, and a contemplation on the effects of loneliness and isolation and what these can bring.
Anyway, definitely check The Blackcoat's Daughter out. And thanks for the clip.

Along with not giving us much anything new on the aliens, my main issue with AQP Day One was that I thought it would be interesting to see exactly *how* humans figured out they hunt by sound. And how the aliens couldn't swim! Missed opportunities.

I felt the same way about Longlegs. Wayy too over-hyped and did leave the cinema a bit disappointed...but... I went to see it again and enjoyed it wayyyy soo much more the second time round! I want to see Infested, ta. The First Omen was too derivative for me. It needed to stand on its own, rather than plagiarise great films like Possession and reference the original The Omen in such an on the nose way. I cringed at ''It's all for you'' -It took me completely out of the film. It was very well made though, with excellent performances and a decent score. Longlegs was like a sampler of far better films, very disappointing (great marketing though).
