I read somewhere that it says this for 1940 version about breaking the Pleasure Island curse, which is the same curse that turned the boys into donkeys:
“Back home, Geppetto, Jiminy, Figaro, and Cleo mourn the loss of Pinocchio. However, having proven himself brave, truthful, and unselfish, Pinocchio is revived and turned into a real human boy by the Blue Fairy, getting rid of the Pleasure Island curse in the process, much to everyone's joy. As the group celebrates, Jiminy steps outside to thank the Fairy and is rewarded with a solid gold badge that certifies him as an official conscience.”

The Coachman wanted to be that sure that Alexander lost his ability to speak that he repeated him the same question, over and over. Even in different languages. However, Alexander was able to answer back in every of them.

My heart was breaking when young Alexander said he wanted to go home to his mother and that wicked Coachman just laughed at him and threw him into a pen with other donkeys who could talk, and when they pleaded to be released, he just cracked his whip and shouted at them to be quiet. I'm seeing this and I just want to smack the teeth out of that bastard for treating those poor boys like that! I know it's just a movie, but it really pains and hurts me to see innocent children being kidnapped and going through such difficulties And what really made it worse was that they were never rescued. It's like the Coachman just plain got away with it!

I felt the same... When I saw the movie as a kid, it was horrible to know that the boys weren't saved and I always thought, what the poor parents will think... Their sons are lost forever, no one will ever know what happened to them. Maybe Alexander's mother looks out of the window every day and hopes so much he will return to her...
I know it's just a movie but I feel so sad for all these broken familys... 😢

@@disneiya This scene and Lampwick's transformation terrified me as a child, and it still disturbs me to this day. I actually have a really dark thought about what might've happened to the other near-completely transformed kids who could still talk. If the transformation didn't completely take and they never lost their speech, instead of selling them off to the circus (Pinocchio's fate in the book), or to farmers for hard labor (Lampwick), the kids who could still talk were slaughtered, skinned, and their skins sold off to make boots or any other item that donkey leather could be used for. The Coachman seems like the kind of bastard who'd get as much pay as he can, in whatever way he can.

Maybe because some old movies use slang that children in a later generation wouldn't understand? Can't say much for most of the other languages but i can say the dutch versions made subtle changes in the dialouge that make more sense in the context of the scene. Compare "Ik hoef geen ezel te worden" (I don't have to become a donkey) to "Ik wil geen ezel zijn" (I don't want to be a donkey), the latter makes more sense then the former to be said by someone who has already turned into a donkey.
