When I was young, Metallica, A7X, and Three Days Grace were the baseline for metal in my head. If a band was softer than any of those three, they just weren’t metal to me. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to vibe with Ghost and bands like them. It’s awesome to learn that there’s good music out there besides just metal. My first experimentation when it came to finding other music I enjoyed was my discovery of eurowave and EDM. After that was rap and hip-hop, then trip-hop, and most recently, in this electronic style, is phonk. Alonside them were other genres I’ve come to appreciate like cottagecore (sad ukulele lesbian), lofi, 70s-00s pop, folk music, southern gothic… fuck, even country. Music is amazing, and I’m really glad I expanded my horizons to enjoy even more of it!
I listen to the old shi like death and thrash so i usually use that stuff because thats where most metalcore stuff came from, but i respect metalcore and all that stuff a lot too
I honestly just feel like listening to music that has guitars and interesting lyrics sometimes and that stuff often happens to be called metal. But I don't go out into the world actively looking for specific genres, which is why my playlists aren't named something like "metal music" but more like "instant guitar action" or "beats that can be considered danceable". 😂
The phrase "heavy metal thunder!" is in the Steppenwolf song "Born to Be Wild". As such, any song as heavy, or heavier, can claim the title "metal" if it so chooses. IMHO.
I believe metal is determined by the time that was made. And the subject matter that goes over and some bands have just earned the right to be metal even though that doesn’t classify those classifications. Like Limp Bizkit.

I have been listening to metal since the early 90s and like a lot of different styles! I don't understand people who get so pedantic about "genres", to me metal is metal!!
As long as it's metal enough it's metal.
dude metal is a beautiful badass spectrum. I like metal of various styles and subgenres, that's kinda it. symphonic power metal is sick (Kamelot fans wya) and so is melodic death metal (Arch Enemy fans wya)
Anything with good chugs I'll call some type of metal.
Gimme the chugs and I'm happy to headbang
I look at it like a spectrum bands like metallic and megadeth to Slipknot and above as metal
Metal or not, it is still music that anyone can enjoy.
I listen to the old shi like death and thrash so i usually use that stuff because thats where most metalcore stuff came from, but i respect metalcore and all that stuff a lot too
I listen to metal, from the chill metal, to heavy, but I draw the line at extreme metal. I like to be able to understand the lyrics.
Anything slightly heavier than Black Sabbath I would consider starter metal.
I don’t think there’s a bench mark, I gotta *feel* the metal.
IMHO.
if the genre has metal in its name, it's metal
Personally, if I like music, it goes on a playlist and I like it‼️
Most metal music video of all time! 🤘
I believe metal is determined by the time that was made. And the subject matter that goes over and some bands have just earned the right to be metal even though that doesn’t classify those classifications. Like Limp Bizkit.
When I was younger and my whole personality revolved around music I would blast it just to say I was hardcore then would go home and listen to country and 80s metal lol but CC was the first "extreme" metal band I got into
Funnily enough , u were my starting band , now my family are scared of the screeching at 3am coming from my room
It doesn’t matter what others think, if you think it’s metal, it’s metal to you, if your friend Skeg thinks it’s not, it’s not metal to skeg
