  • If you are local to Southern California, chances are you may have run into Jack Charney, his beautiful 1957 BMW Isetta and his one-of-a-kind sweater. On a weekly basis Jack can be seen driving his Isetta along Mulholland Highway and at various BMW events. This particular Isetta has a story, one that started when Jack purchased it new in 1957, and after regretting selling it, found himself on journey that led him back to his same car nearly twenty years later.

Sometime in the mid sixties,I was riding with my Dad down the center of town. Looking out the window, off in a shopping center parking lot,I saw the front of a car open(steering wheel and all) and a man emerge. We continued down the road and I excitedly told my dad what I had seen(steering wheel and all). I amight as well have told him I saw Santa Claus....He laughed and said I was obviously mistaken and laughed a little more and when we got home,I told my Mom about it too,to no avail...I had simply imagined it,apparently....But I knew and I never forgot it....some 25 years later,I was in a BMW Motorcycle shop and there was an Isetta....I couldn't believe it....I got the lowdown and had a most wonderful time reminding my Dad and proving myself right after all those years....

@@IsadoreWoW the Bible was right for all time, in some ways, when it said "seek, and he shall find". You would be amazed what you CAN FIND. I'd always wanted a Karmann-Ghia, but the 2nd model, the RAZOR-EDGE. So called because of it's (semi) sharp creases in the bodywork, which having been making a comeback recently! Check this much rarer Karmann-Ghia on the internet, under the title Karmann-Ghia Type 34. I'd only seen 2 of them on the road, they're so rare. So later on, there was an owners club, and I contacted them to ask if ever had any for sale. A lady was selling hers, and she thought it would be best to sell hers through them, because no-one else had heard of these cars! So if you think of WHERE interesting cars are likely to be sold, you can still find them, because not many people are hunting them if they haven't heard of them! Good luck with finding something nice. You CAN do it!

I've saved this movie on the internet, on my phone, it's so amazing! It's such a lovely story, with all your talents (fantastic jumper!), you could turn this story into a cute cartoon-illustrated children's book! You could then sell it generally through companies that do automobile books, and also through the internal Isetta Club! Also, this is just the sort of novelty that Sunday newspapers like in their book review section! Make it comes out in the run up to Christmas, so people can buy it as a gift! Remember, when new books are planned, it takes about a year until they are ready for release. One more thing, because the car did only a few miles between when you first had it, and when you got it back, it must have "been waiting for YOU." (Come to Daddy)! Like a lost dog! Did you see that film, INDECENT PROPOSAL, you know, where a couple are at a hotel or something. A man sees the lady, and apologetically tells them that he is so taken with this lady, that he simply HAS to sleep with her, for one night! He can offer them ONE MILLION DOLLARS, and they are reluctant, but they realise he doesn't mean this in any bad way, and they are in a bad way, with not being able to pay their mortgage - so they agree to his suggestion. There is a statement at the start of the movie, IF YOU LOVE SOMETHING, LET IT GO! IF IT COMES BACK TO YOU, IT'S YOURS FOREVER! IF IT DOES NOT, IT WAS NOT REALLY YOURS ANYWAY! Like your car! So make quite sure you keep it this time! I would like to tell you how such a thing happened to me, about a painting, and, incredibly, about someone who owned not an Isetta, but a Karmann-Ghia! I don't know whether or not you're in the internet so I'm giving my postal address - so you can give me either your internet address, or postal address, if you want to hear My stories! NYGEL MILLER, 112 DOUGLAS CLOSE, WALLINGTON, SURREY, SM6 9JY, ENGLAND. It would take too long to tell you HERE on the comments section of your fascaniting video!.

After the 'restoration', unfortunately, he found all of the original parts stolen and what was left, broken (was not noticeable in tv), and the car not working.
Worst part is, the people who restore this, are selling via "mercado libre" (Argentinean e-bay).

Whats really crazy is, how much these things cost these days, a good isetta is worth 10000€ (about 13000$), and a perfectly restorated one, 30000$ at least.
Because after the war, isettas and other "cars/bikes" like that were build so that people could get something better than a bike.
But then, more and more people were able to afford cars, the isettas were discarded, given to the kids as a first car, and so on.
Add to that, there isn´t much "thick" metal on that car, so rust will kill it quickly, once its no longer taken care of.
And its the same thing, with all the other bikes like the isetta, all the gogomobils, glass, messerschmitts cabinroller, and so on.
Discarded as trash in the late 60s and early 70s, and these days a garage full of them, would be enough to pay for a new house.

all of these videos really show the beauty in the connection between an owner and his/her vehicle. it is truly an emotional bond stronger than love itself. great work Petrolicious.. its insane how much emotion you can bring from these videos to even the most ignorant auto enthusiasts.

That is an adorable car. It's the kind of car kids would say "Hi car" to :)

Jack I also owned an Isetta 300 in the mid 1970s and bought many parts from Marilyn. Mine likely suffered from my ham-fisted attempts at restoration, but it was pure fun and I wish I could find it again like you found yours!

I'm 68 now, though, so I of course liked what you said about my generation! Well, I would, wouldn't I! I used to think that my friend's dad actually got to drive the first M.G. sportscar was the luckiest thing, but if you wait awhile, you will find interesting things from YOUR time that are cool, and I see you like RORY GALLAGHER! I think it's cool that a friend invited me to see Rory Gallagher, playing at his College, when I'd never heard of him. I've been a lifelong fan since! Check out his concerts , on the internet , in Germany, at the Lorelei club, and the Rockpalast!
