I like your content man its the authentic Linux experience when you choose to experiment with these lesser used distros

I have to agree, and for someone that is new to Linux, and curious about various distros, it is a great way to get some pointers to what distros could be fun to try.

Thank you very much for your brief review of Rocky Linux. Exactly the information I was looking for in regards to Gaming.

I'm glad I found your channel. I really like your videos!
Your conclusion is exactly what I thought. In the future, it'll be the best option. Stable, great performance, and good compatibility with Nvidia. Today is not possible, and f-ing around with CachyOS is fun, but I look forward to a stable distro with all the current problems ironed out

Wrapped up nicely .. would you care to have a look at the latest Solus Linux 4.5 release? I believe it's a very underrated distro, that should perform pretty damn good right out of the box, actually. That would be another fun to watch! :)

Yes Solus definitely. Out of the box good gaming system.

Agreed, I just posted a comment saying this before I seen yours. SolusOS out of the box for gaming and content creation, you might be very suprised

As someone who usually plays at 60fps. And don't see any problem. Watching someone saying 200fps at low end is crazy too me.

Given that RHEL is used by creatives at Dreamworks and Disney and Pixar, I darn well expect it to be good at content creation at least lol

It's probably great if you are just using Maya, or their internally developed software as a workstation. If you have to use the system for daily computing... different situation.

I'll let you in on nice little gem for gaming and content creation on linux, and that's SolusOS, not as popular as most distro's, but its been pretty good over the years on performance

    • @Pr0te1nsh4ke

Absolutely right. Since Solus and Clear Linux do or have shared many of the Devs, they are optimizing on a per package basis as well. I don't like Distros are slapping -O3 and -lto all over the place - this approach doesn't make any sense to me. The Solus Kernel also come with BORE and RT optimizations OOB, so there isn't even any need for replacing the stock kernel with anything else.

Very interesting ! Did you use ELRepo repository to upgrade the kernel? I am not too keen to compile one...

Hello! Will be building newer system with discrete midrange Nvidia graphics and 12th gen i7 cpu; wondering if its worth double booting; Davinci Resolve is tested on Rocky linux only (would like to also use Cinelerra or Kdenlive); then something like Drauger OS for steam gaming and streaming. Coming from Ubuntu Studio & other flavors, have dabbled with other distros...thanks! Note: does Rocky linux run fine with low latency kernel as well?

How well does this work with Davinci Resolve Studio? Looking to switch to linux and kick windows to the curb.

All distros run DaVinci Resolve. This one need no dependencies tweak.

Your problem with Debian was because you were doing everything wrong.
    1. Installation took a long time because you used netinstall image but chose a slow mirror, so download took a long time. Either choose a close enough mirror, or use DVD images with everything already included, or use Live images which have the Calamares installer.
    2. When trying to install Nvidia driver, for some reason you tried to add sid (aka unstable) repo instead of enabling non-free section for stable repo as Wiki said, and then you went with trying to install the driver via a .run file instead of, again, just enabling non-free section and installing official nvidia-driver package. Even Nvidia themselves recommend against using .run files on their download page and tell to use distribution provided packages instead! That was a pain you went into yourself.
    3. If you need to use a newer version of the driver, don't use .run files! Just add the same Nvidia repo you used for Rocky Linux which has driver for Debian, too. DLSS works fine there BTW, as more than one person tried them and confirmed it worked just fine. It's the same driver after all.
    4. Then you spent a lot of time compiling TKG kernel to get… 14 FPS lower on average, and literally the same minimum FPS compared to the stock kernel provided by Debian.

      @A1RM4X  5 месяцев назад +2

I did not do everything wrong.
      1. Debian took a long time to install compared to the other distro on the same connection. Like it or not. I used the default mirror which is recommended by the installer. My point is that with the exact same internet connection other distros installation were way faster without any issue.
      2. The non free version of the driver on the non free repo was release 2 years ago (525) reason why I installed the .run file (550) which included way more features for the recent games and my recent GPU.
      3. Concerning the Nvidia CUDA repo, there is an issue with the packaging because it did not include the ngx library libnvidia-ngx1 by default. This library is REQUIRED for DLSS. Maybe it is fixed by now, I did not retest the repo. FYI, I was not the only one impacted: www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/172mxqm/dlss_not_working_after_reinstalling_the_system/
      4. TkG did not perform during my test. It could have been a regression of the newer kernel at the time... However we can both agree that a custom kernel performs better than the default kernel for gaming.
I hope Debian will fix those issues, but I can´t let you say it was my fault. Have a good day.

Alright, maybe my original message sounded too harsh, I apologize for that.
      > Debian took a long time to install compared to the other distro on the same connection
Rocky was not installed using netinstall image though, but with pre-downloaded ISO which had everything they needed already in the image, so they didn't have to download anything except maybe a few updates in the process. That compared to downloading such a large desktop environment as KDE, with LibreOffice, Firefox and such.
The download speed could be better of course, and IDK why it was so slow for you. I routinely get 50+ MB/s (bytes) where I live, so maybe CDN server near you was having issues?
      > The non free version of the driver on the non free repo was release 2 years ago (525)
The version in Debian repo ( 525.147.05 ) was released on 2023.10.31 according to Nvidia web site, containing many fixes backported from newer major versions. But I get what you say about features - in this case it makes sense to install a newer driver indeed.
      > Concerning the Nvidia CUDA repo, there is an issue with the packaging because it did not include the ngx library libnvidia-ngx1 by default. This library is REQUIRED for DLSS. Maybe it is fixed by now, I did not retest the repo.
The package itself is certainly there. If it's not installed by default then it's worth reporting to Nvidia and/or Debian, of course.
Maybe people who didn't have issues were using the flatpak version of Steam which uses flatpak's own userland part of Nvidia drivers including that library; in fact, maybe that's the reason it worked in Rocky, too.
      > However we can both agree that a custom kernel performs better than the default kernel for gaming.
I won't necessarily agree. Custom kernels performance highly depends on tweaks made and can easily swing both ways, as we've seen more than once. If they don't bring much to the table (all other tests including recent ones had about the same minimum FPS as that stock 6.1 kernel) then why even bother with compiling? I highly doubt most people would feel any difference, except for maybe with really old kernels like Rocky has by default.

No worries! We can have discussion it is cool.
1 - I agree with you on this point, it could be a CDN issue. I also mentioned it in the stream in which I tested Debian.
2 - We are aligned on the repo. I do think they should bump up the version, at least to the 535 for all the last gen Nvidia users.
3 - One of the viewer of the stream (Davius to name him), reported the issue upstream and I believe it has been fixed since then. We will retest everything for the next Debian release.
4 - Agree to disagree on this one.
To conclude, I do LOVE Debian and sometimes I am harsh with it because I would love it to do better. To date this is the distro I have used the most if I include the server usage.

      > I do think they should bump up the version, at least to the 535 for all the last gen Nvidia users.
Believe it or not but they are actually doing exactly that! 535 should be part of 12.7 when it comes out. (Could've been part of 12.6 but it needs to be in testing first, and that is blocked due to huge 64-bit time_t transition sid has been going through for the last month or so.)
