I think the solution would be to have huge reflecting surfaces you run by. Like huge glass buildings. You could see yourself and your chasers in them. The game is even called Mirror's Edge.
+Gábor Koszper I wonder how hard it would be to actually put in a look back function. I know Dying Light has it, and that's pretty much open world Mirror's Edge with zombies as far as I know
5:55 Wouldn't "Papers Please" be what Pat's asking for? Probably not with the kind of gameplay he wants, but you are part of The Man with the reasoning being that you need the money to take care of your family.
I think he wants to play a character that works for an authoritarian regime that's not the bad guy. In Papers Please it's a sort of "End Justify the Means", where you need to compromise your morals in order to keep your job. What Pat wants is to work in an authoritarian utopia where you fight evil rebels trying to muck up your nice paint job.

+Christian Hansen No, I think Pat explicitely stated he wants to play as a character who has a reason to work for the fascist regime. Like real people in real fascist regimes who aren't fascists themselves.
This LP has the potential to be one of their top 5. I LOVE it so far. Great conversations, decent game trivia, good gameplay. Is Patsworth truly the best of combinations?
There something about pat and woolie together that just makes their playthroughs so mellow. Like it's just so calm. They seem to just play the game and talk as if they weren't filming, without either of them trying to be funny at every second. It's peaceful.
Lynn Kimber Whoopsy doodles! I went to bed before I saw your post. One part of Oni which really got to me was the big bulky computer bank things in every room. Like, I know they needed the rooms to not be completely empty, and they needed things breaking line of sight between you and enemies, whereas at least here it looks like a perfectly decent office space and everyone happens to be on vacation or something. But maybe having individual desks and chairs would have added too many polygons for the 2001 engine to handle. And if there were actually chairs, it would be weird that all the scientists and clerks would be standing around like health+ammo-dispensing dullards instead of sitting down.
RippahRooJizah I guess it just shows the diminishing returns of advancements in graphics and performance. Also god Oni was objectively such a mediocre, 6.5/10 game but I have an inordinate amount of nostalgia for it. It was the first game I actually really got into and played all day for weeks or months.
I really love watching them play this. It's so great to learn about all of these new ways to play the game and see it in action. Really makes me want to pick up this game again. Haven't played it in so long...
Woolie and Pat's enthusiasm for this game is infectious. I didn't really care too much about a sequel before, but now I am actually looking forward to it. Well, to watching it, I would get incredibly dizzy playing this and hate it, but I just kind of have a motion thing.
30:04. I love how whilst Pat is saying about not being able to look behind you, mid roll when the camera is pointing back you can see one of them jumping off the roof Woolie just jumped off.
"The only way to play is without guns" Shows off the exact reason that way to play sucks, in that you lose all momentum and have to hide behind stuff to regen health...
+masonloc Generally I kept dying until I got that one final run where I knocked out everyone in seconds. The one I had the most trouble with was the one with the shutter door you have to wait for before it. When I finally beat it pacifist style it was so satisfying.
I'm all for less gunplay in Catalyst, because I hope hand-to-hand combat will be more solid, but in this game I'd rather pick up that rifle for 10 seconds and get back to freerunning. It doesn't also make sense from Faith's perspective, unless she intends not to kill usual policemen.
8 лет назад+7
+Elwood I think it's justified to kill the ones with assault rifles. But not the regular blues. Also, I can't really explain why, but I think it makes the game better that you have the ability to use guns, while it's discouraging it, than for example it didn't have guns. I mean, if it didn't have guns, then it would be just another platformer game. I think what makes this game unique is that the players WANT to be in the flow, have a clean run, but when they resort to guns, it gets messy and ugly and slow.
+Elwood The solution is to remove all policemen entirely. Instead make Faith a pizza delivery girl who gets paid more the faster she can deliver and in the later levels instead of free runner cops there are other pizza delivery runners trying to be the first to make the delivery.
+Gábor Koszper I agree. I think a cooler mechanic in Catalyst would be if you shot wildly in the general direction of the cops, it would force them to take cover while you make your escape. That seems like something Faith might do rather than actually kill them.
I know that this'll be a short playthrough as it's not a very long game and Woolie is blasting through it but...thanks for keeping these videos coming. I do really enjoy LP's where you guys know the game and are really able to sit and small-talk about the game and all sorts of other nonsense as opposed to continually having to focus on the gameplay.
That "gather every enemy into a pile and AoE them all" trick used to be a preferred strategy in City of Heroes. The tanking class was almost _too_ good.
I actually use that stratagem a lot in games that allow me to do so and when it works...it feels so good. There is just something really satisfying about it.

Woolie is so right. The first level is one of the best if not THE best. I've gone back and played through that level so many goddamn times, but I couldn't even remember some of levels in this game until they played through them.
I've played this game so many times...years ago. Now you've reached a point where I'm saying "holy shit I don't remember this part!" and in a way I'm happy I forgot because it's like new Mirror's Edge!
about the half-life bhop, there is some super cool shit about it that Pat would love. In hl2, they "fixed" bhop by making it so that jumping gives you a bit of backwards momentum, thus slowing your forward movement. So people started bhopping backwards. And going even faster than before. But you couldn't see where you're going, so the skill needeed was much higher. Pretty cool stuff.
Hey Pat I know it isn't a game known well for its story but FTL: Faster Than Light has you as a part of the galactic Federation fighting against the rebels. You are the good guy
They could implement a look behind you button like in dying light that slows time so you can keep running while doing so. either that or design environments that have the player character running towards or past reflective surfaces that give you a glance at what's behind you
the wall run kick glitch places an invisible platform underneath faith for about 3 frames (from memory) so if you spam jump you can jump off of that and gain extra distance
So at 26:49 when you're running down the hallway with the black windows, if you look in you'll see interrogation rooms with people tied to chairs and stuff. It's basically the only indication that the government you're fighting is actually evil, and you can't even look at it if you're playing the game the way you're supposed to. Nice detail, though, I guess.
As far as I understand, from +ovendonkey (who does both PS3 / PC speedruns here on RUclips), the Kick Glitch works because for a few i-frames after a kick the game puts a floor under you to finish the kick animation. If you are fast enough, you can abuse that i-frame floor to bounce off of. Re: Checkpoint skipping. This is because even if the Level isn't loaded, all of the checkpoints in empty space are. So, if you touch the checkpoint in the level and die, you'll load at that checkpoint and the level will load around you. This is why the skips in the Boat Level work.
6:00 It's called playing Light Sided characters in SWTOR. Actually really interesting stories to be made about good people working within the clearly evil Empire.
"We could fake commentary over it" "I'm glad you're not a huge coward". Oh, come on, Pat, like you would go through with it. If Woolie tried something like that, you would rub it in his face and never, NEVER let it go.
Little does Pat know is that there is a game where you can play as part of the authoritarian dictatorship. In fact it was an MMO. City of Heroes had the City of Rogues expansion. Which allowed you to play as either part of the Dictatorship or the Underground. And did indeed let you make decisions between being either a Clean Cop trying their hardest to make the system work justly and a Nazi, and being either a legit for the people Freedom Fighter or an Anarchist Terrorist. Not only that, but IN AN MMO, your choices of how you complete certain missions, you could switch between the factions, and the missions fully explore the dirt on each side.
I'm looking at these two gush all over the place about the melee and avoiding fights and the superhard boss when fought with no weapons, and all I can think is "yeah, I would just just shoot the fucker". Man, my gaming background couldn't be more different than these guys.
The server room is the first thing I ever played of mirrors edge because my cousin could not beat it, same thing happened with RE4 the first time I played that game I needed to help a friend with the room that had 2 Garradors in it with limited items. It sucks being the one people come to, to solve their game problems.
Yeah, Mirror's Edge would have benefited greatly from Outlast's "look behind you to see the fugly guy chasing you and oh god he's catching up" button. Of course, that button would need more use than just letting you see the runners. Perhaps if it was an indicator of when they've lost a bead on you? Or instead you were seeing what they were doing to figure out what path you could take to lose them, like: "This guy's going for pipes and ledges, so I should see if walljumps will shake him," or "This guy is fast but can't turn for shit, so double around and change directions like a pinball while escaping." Also, shout out to Marathon, yeah! Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only person outside of Bungie that remembers those games.
The thing about Mirror's Edge is that it's a great game, but only on your second run. Getting to the latter half of the game the first time and not knowing where to go, what to do, and all the cool, speedy tactics will sour you on this game FAST. But when you play it again, and have some knowledge, it becomes much better.
+DIO's Scary Monster and THE WORLD No, but he's a smarmy, goofy happy-go-lucky kind of guy ala Indiana Jones, then he murders hundreds of people on every adventure. Obviously it's for the sake of the gameplay, but it's the same kind of ludonarrative dissonance that Tomb Raider suffers from. Personally I don't see any way around it, but it's an interesting side effect of being a videogame.
+DIO's Scary Monster and THE WORLD Just because he never claimed to be a pacifist doesn't make the genocidal path of destruction he leaves in his wake any better.
***** Indiana Jones ha a much lower bodycount than Nathan Drake, on account of him not being a videogame character and thus needing to give the player something to shoot every thirty seconds.
Woolie and Pat have been doing a lot of lps together. Weren't they resistant of doing lps together before because they were afraid they'd murder each other by the end?
i think with the whole Woolie motion sickness thing, i think it might be the FOV , he is describing how it is narrow corridors that get too him, it might just be narrow FOV?
I get the appeal of the aesthetics. I get the appeal of the character design - at least for Faith. I even get the appeal of the 'smooth parkour'. Where I think the game fell completely flat for me is the 'awkward parkour'. Places where you come to a crawl because the ledge was a tad too high, or you did something slightly wrong and had to run back around a thing to try again. The sometimes very obtuse collision detection causing you to fail a grab. Places where it's unclear where you're supposed to go. Places where you're being shot at and get hit no matter what you do (Faith shouldn't be having a nice time jumping and running with a bullet hole ANYWHERE on her body). I'm hopeful that a lot of that stuff will change with Catalyst, because this game was at most a 3 out of 5, even when it came out.
5:50 Section 9 from Ghost In The Shell is sometimes portrayed that way. Constantly involved in shady business like torture and political assassinations, but the villains are usually people who are even worse.
"Guns suck, don't use them!" "Oh man this is so boring because we have to regen after every enemy because we get shot so much running up to them when they're not being shot to be interrupted!" I do not understand your hatred of guns in this game. There's only like 4-5 rooms in the entire game where they're useful and they're super fun and useful in those bits.
16:00 A good FOV. Plain and simple. Also: I just learned that there are runner cops in the game. I swear to God, I have played trough the game twice, and I didn't know that there are other enemy runners other than, the one in the white riot gear.
I played Red Dead Redemption with the auto-aim off. I did this because I had read there was a general feeling that the game was too easy as you could pop heads without effort. I had a fun experience with the auto-aim off, and my kills felt a lot more satisfying. Sniping a guy off his horse at full speed? Ahh yes.
The elegant solution would have been to design the course in such a way that you'd have to look below, so that you could see them getting up and following you.
The idea of Fascist controlled Anti-Runners is, conceptually, amazing. As if to say "the Dream is dead, The Man has countered the guerilla advantage, the Golden Age of Runners is over". It's just too bad the game couldn't implement that idea in gameplay.
if you like those "government is Evil but for good reason" urine town would be for you- its a musical and kinda cheesy but the plot is basically just that.
I don't know pat, I don't think it really takes too much to figure out the ditman glitch in re4 that makes leon run faster. That mixed with using the zip line twice will put you out of bounds (allowing to skip the double gigante fight). That's one of those that drastically saves time. If only the steam version had the tmp glitch.
Pat's wish for a protagonist authoritarian government player role is essentially fulfilled by the way he's been playing Fallout 4 with his bed hives lol.

+petardawnabial Nobody watching this needed you to use the full name for polygon or resolution.
+petardawnabial
If you take some of the meanings of resolution it would still make sense to call them low resolution. Yes resolution in video games doesn't mean how high quality models are, but it is still a way of describing models with low poly counts:
the smallest interval measurable by a telescope or other scientific instrument; the resolving power.
the degree of detail visible in a photographic or television image.
+petardawnabial
Low polygon character models could be described as having a low amount of detail, therefore it would fit with the second definition.
I get that resolution means the number of pixels that make up the image, but if we take the meaning of resolution as the amount of detail that something has, then it makes sense that you could describe an object that has a low amount of detail (low polygon count) as having a low resolution (low detail).

That's a really cool idea, but reflective surfaces have always been a technical sore spot for a lot of games/game engines.

Basically, the "falling" state doesn't start until the animation for the kick finishes, but you're still moving down during the animation.
The game's hyper-clean, sparsly populated areas sort of remind me of what Oni was trying to go for, but didn't really get right.
+Foul Fagus To be fair, Oni is a pretty old game. Otherwise I'm not sure what else you thought Oni didn't get right in this case.
One part of Oni which really got to me was the big bulky computer bank things in every room. I like how many times a security gate being broken and partially opened is the sole reason Faith can succeed.
So... if we were to become friends, I would express this by calling you Patty.
Understood.
about the half-life bhop, there is some super cool shit about it that Pat would love.
They could implement a look behind you button like in dying light that slows time so you can keep running while doing so. either that or design environments that have the player character running towards or past reflective surfaces that give you a glance at what's behind you
Pat's comment around 13:30 is funny because there was actually a guy who was speedrunning Paper Mario and doing that shit live on stream.
the wall run kick glitch places an invisible platform underneath faith for about 3 frames (from memory) so if you spam jump you can jump off of that and gain extra distance
This game gave me horrible headaches, but it was worth the play through!
Starship Troopers felt like fascist Earth vs space bugs, the lore probably doesn't back me up.
6:00 It's called playing Light Sided characters in SWTOR. Actually really interesting stories to be made about good people working within the clearly evil Empire.
I like it when they play a good game and talk about why it is good.
"We could fake commentary over it"
"I'm glad you're not a huge coward".
Oh, come on, Pat, like you would go through with it. If Woolie tried something like that, you would rub it in his face and never, NEVER let it go.
I played the game and completed it but I don't remember most of the levels wow it's been a long time.
15:09 *Cops:* "STOP THAT GIR- oh....uh....GOOD WORK, MEN!"
Or instead you were seeing what they were doing to figure out what path you could take to lose them, like: "This guy's going for pipes and ledges, so I should see if walljumps will shake him," or "This guy is fast but can't turn for shit, so double around and change directions like a pinball while escaping."
Also, shout out to Marathon, yeah! Sometimes I wonder if I'm the only person outside of Bungie that remembers those games.
Yeah! Time to sploosh over colours!
Last time on Mirror's Edge, FUN WITH ELEVATORS!! :D
The thing about Mirror's Edge is that it's a great game, but only on your second run. Getting to the latter half of the game the first time and not knowing where to go, what to do, and all the cool, speedy tactics will sour you on this game FAST. But when you play it again, and have some knowledge, it becomes much better.
Man I miss this game I gotta get it again
I can't believe I only just now saw the poster for Liam Dip in the intro.
I don't really get the Nathan Drake is a cold blooded murderer thing, did Drake ever say he was a pacifist or never killed a person?
Only if Nathan Drake befriends everyone he meets in Undertale.
+MsPohi Take a joke.
The kickglitch shortcut he does skips a checkpoint :^)
5:50 Section 9 from Ghost In The Shell is sometimes portrayed that way. Constantly involved in shady business like torture and political assassinations, but the villains are usually people who are even worse.
"Papers Please" had that part of the evil system but for good reasons feel.
"Guns suck, don't use them!"
"Oh man this is so boring because we have to regen after every enemy because we get shot so much running up to them when they're not being shot to be interrupted!"
I do not understand your hatred of guns in this game.
I REALLY HOPE EA IS TAKING NOTES!!
My mother used to have a saying: "The hurry-er I go, the behind-er I get." Which is a super "Mom" way to put it, but it's true.
A game like Mirror’s Edge shouldn’t have a boss fight; it should have a boss chase. One mistake and the bad guy escapes.
if you like those "government is Evil but for good reason" urine town would be for you- its a musical and kinda cheesy but the plot is basically just that.
Where does Faith get her shoes?
You would think they would stop making those.
Or restrict it.
can't wait for them to start the bloodborne dlc :D
This game is godlike.
Pat's wish for a protagonist authoritarian government player role is essentially fulfilled by the way he's been playing Fallout 4 with his bed hives lol.
Are you gonna play catalyst when it's released?
what patt wants is a game about schindler's list
"Ugh... the slide-kick... the other guy's there, it's not a perfect solution... ugh..."
Meanwhile, he dies a dozen times trying the "right" way.
18:13 Pat would be living it up with Jesus the Snitch in the city
I can't wait until they get to Atrium
