- The Tiny Cabin Gets A Few Steps Closer To Being Finished
Welcome back to another episode here at Maple Monkey Homestead! Back here at the 12x12 tiny cabin in the woods and the tiny cabin gets a few steps closer to being finished! Its always a great moment when some big things can be checked off the checklist for back here at the offgrid cabin.
We are still in the midst of winter, but the bright side is that the temperatures are starting to go up a little bit and we are out of the polar vortex that seemed to grip the area for a few weeks. Even though its still winter, that isn't stopping me from getting things taken care of back here of the offgrid homestead.
The chickens are still doing great and still laying eggs, even through all the cold we have gotten, I think one of them has gone broody so the egg production seems to be down to about 2 or 3 eggs a day for the time being, which is still fine by me. Im still toying with the idea of getting 10 or more hens come the spring time to amp up egg productions that much more. Im attributing the healthy chickens to all of the snacks, treats and extra protein I give them almost on a daily basis.
The downstairs of the tiny cabin is pretty well fully insulated now, I tackled the last big wall to get done in this episode, it was previously done but before I was living here mice got into the wall and made a house in there so I had to rip out all of the old insulation, disinfect and at the time I didn't have anything to replace it with, well that was the last wall on the lower level that needed insulation and it makes a great difference in heat and looks of the wall!
The offgrid cabin is slowly getting things checked off the list for getting the inside closer and closer to completion. With the extra insulation I will be able to use it in the upper loft area for a good chunk of the front wall to finish it off. The loft area is about 70% insulated and this added insulation will bring it that much closer to being fully done as well.
There has been some other upgrades to the 12x12 tiny cabin as well such as lights! I now have 2 lights down stairs and 2 lights upstairs, even though I still don't have electricity, these are rechargeable LED lights that work absolutely awesome, believe it or not the actually give off a decent amount of light as well, not only are they bright and light up my lower and upper levels, you can switch between what light spectrum you want as well, from cool white to warm white which is a pretty cool feature as well, they are definitely an awesome addition to the cabin.
Slowly getting my water situation in better order until I can get a well put in the spring time, until then I now have 18L jugs that I have hooked up to a small rechargeable water pump with actually works great as well and was only $5, so I can't complain about that and its almost like I have running water now, well I guess if I close my eyes that's the case. It will still be so awesome when I can get a full running water systems going in the warmer months ahead.
The loft has some additions as well such as the upper windows now have curtains and the bed has some new sheets and a foam mattress topper, which adds another little bit of comfort, even though its an extra 2 inches it makes a world of difference, who would of thought eh!?!
Once the nice weather rolls around and the days get longer, there is going to be a lot of work coming up, but until then I will do what I can to get the ole tiny cabin closer to completion and adding a little bit more comfort and convenience each time.
