I was at Claiborne the morning of the race. Was pretty cool to see the barn he was born in, then immediately drive to Churchill and see him win the Derby that same day.
I saw this race from my spot on the backside that I have occupied for the past 5 years - while the horses were circling in front of us for the post parade all of the other horses were fretting, prancing & nervous - Orb was calm, cool & collected and the look he gave me as he passed by was of pure confidence
I got to see this race from the rail on the backstretch. To say that this experience was magical is an understatement. It was a lifetime opportunity and I will forever remember every second of it!
LOVED IT! What a horse! Was so wide, and was every bit the best horse in the race! Revolutionary and Golden Soul got ground saving tricks while Orb covered lots more ground and went way wide and still won by daylight!
It was thrilling to watch Orb pass the finish line in person! the KY derby was the best time ever..even in the rain! Now I have to go EVERY year...now on to Baltimore!
I'm not sure what was better, Orb's great move in the middle of the racetrack after having a wide trip the entire race and swallowing the field or Larry Collmus' call of "ORRRRRRRRBBBBB"! at 2:20. Both give me gooosebumps.
Finally, trainer Claude R. "Shug" McCaughey III could win a Kentucky Derby! It was a deserved reward for more than thirty years of training labor. Greetings from Venezuela.
A hero with enough humility to create these moments and then quietly return to his stall not breathing a word about how great he is or was.....I have been wrong a hundred million times with horses but then one comes along which really could care less about all that....he steps into the moment simply because the time is seized by one of the Creators special creatures who we later realized had wings and the other 3 year olds were merely part of the cast of a 3 part supernatural event.....Orrrrb!
I had Orb / Golden Soul in an Exacta Box on this race. The moves Golden Soul made on the stretch to get 2nd are crazy! Great memories watching it back. $50 exacta paid just shy of $50,000. My first day betting on horses to boot... needless to say it got me into the sport big time!
At 2:23 you can see that Orb got distracted, was looking to the right, and as a result slowed his pace. At 2:29 he finally focuses on the race again, and immediately surges ahead. Without that temporary distraction, Orb would have won by a couple more lengths.
I believe Johnny V was turning his head to the right as Normandy Invasion was tired and starting to lug his way. I think Johnny was trying to move him out a bit more to prevent getting bumped.
"Normandy Invasion storms home" absolute chills. Not sure if Larry Collmus knew the significance of that statement or not but it remains one of my favorite calls. Remembering D-Day and all the heroes who laid down their lives. I cannot imagine the fear that took over the soldiers as they saw the beaches in the distance.
amazing finish I will root for orb all the way in the next race and hope orb takes the triple.Btw thanks for uploading this as I was busy today and missed it on tv
Orb.. With some of the most famous rachorses of all time.. Secretariat, Bold Ruler, Dr. Fager, Seattle Slew, Damacus, Native Dancer, something royal, Buck passer, and Shenanigans... Comes from behind.. just like Secretariat... Beautiful.. just like Secretariat... Could it be we, the new generation, get to see another Secretariat, another underdog, another horse you only see in your dreams..
I don't really follow horse racing until this time of year, but I know one thing is certain. Hearing the thunder of the horses in turn one with the Downs in the background is the greatest scene in sports. 1:05
Finally, trainer Shug McCaughey won a Kentucky Derby ¡Congratulations! ¡He always deserved win Run for the Roses! ¡And congratulations to Joel Rosario too!
There will likely never be a next Secretariat but this horse is better than most people realize. His bloodlines are tremendous including Seattle Slew, Bold Ruler on both sides and Native Dancer.. To accelerate in that fashion on that track is certainly reminiscent of his great-great grandpa Secretariat.
Orb must be very good! I know nothing about his form but when you see AP Indy on one side of pedigree and Unbridled on the other, you have to conclude that Orb is one hell of a potential stallion and must be extremely valuable.relative to other Kentucky Derby winners.
When Orb grabs the lead he veered right causing Golden Soul to stop his push and move right, because he won by 2 lengths he wasn't disqualified, if it was by a neck Golden soul is your winner..
I just saw Orb at Claiborne so watching this replay and reading some of the comments. I'm not sure what you're looking at but Orb and Golden Soul don't even come remotely close to touching. There must be at least 5 feet between them at their closest point. A horse will never be DQ'd for interference if no contact is made. In fact, that happens all the time, practically in every race.
Had my eye on this horse for weeks! And then he had my lucky number 16 for the race. Of course he was gonna win ;) no, but that was one hell of a race! nice run, bud!
I didnt realize the derby was on sat! I watched just in time at the 20 sec mark and then to see OOOOORRRRRB *tv host said it so awesome* The best derby ive seen! OOOOORRRBBB FOR THE T.C.!
No one expected him to win? He was the betting favorite and morning line choice. Revolutionary had a chance to pass him and he didn't. But let's be optimistic!
2:02 was ORB's time. While SECRETARIAT STILL holds the KD record time of 1:59...a whole 3 secs. faster. Makes you appreciate more & more what a phenomenal horse Secretariat was. The stinkin #4 Golden Soul screwed up everybody I know's tickets, ...had everybody else in the tri & Super. Well, that's why it's called HORSERACING. Seriously...ORB has the makings for the next TRIPLE CROWN WINNER, if he can handle Belmont at 1 1/2 miles. The BEST to ya , ORB!!, Rosario & especially Shaug!
I think you are right about his tactics. Baffert is going to try to win this race just like Bode almost pulled it off last year and Paynter in the Belmont. He will need a Shackleford type effort. You may be right. I'm betting against it.
Crossing my fingers for Orb on Saturday in Baltimore.. Really hope he wins the Preakness! Great shot with J.Rosario as jockey! I bet daily on horses but on Saturday I'm just a fan. Besides Orb pays 1-1.
I think G. Charlie will get caught up in all of the front end speed in this race. Titletown Five is going to make the lead uneasy for Goldencents and G. Charlie setting it up for the closers. G. Charlie had a great Sunland Derby but there were records set the whole day because the track was so hard and fast that day. We'll see.
There are older races than the Melbourne Cup. You just have to look at the horse races in England like the Epsom Derby (1780). And you can't pin point one particular race as the most prestigious, but the Melbourne Cup is up there with the rest. However you can't surpass its popularity in Australia. I mean, where else in the world do they celebrate a 3 minute horse race with a public holiday!!!
WTF was Mike Smith thinking?? Thrown by the "off" track? Not w/ those times. Credit to Calvin for his ride after that start watch out in Preakness. Javas War will be pissed and ready for redemption. LOVE Orb. Awesome colt.
I think Mike Smith has fallen into a rut of taking whatever horse he is riding into a front running position and hoping that they can hold on.. wherever they are naturally a front runner or not. It showed in this race, Palace Malice could not keep going with the pace that Smith was setting him. Bad ride. Set it up for the back markers.
They really don't feel that much. It's the 'crack' that tends to do more than the impact. And, especially when whipping behind, the number flag catches most of the impact.
Finalmente, el preparador Shug McCaughey pudo ganar un Derby de Kentucky ¡Lo felicito! ¡Siempre mereció ganar la Carrera de las Rosas! ¡También felicito al jinete Joel Rosario!
One day Orbs move sweeping around the far turn picking up horses like falling domino's will one day be embedded in horse racing lore. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.....but......oh the hell with it I haven't seen goldendust laid out in front of a horse since Secretariat. I saw that move and it made my equine senses heighten as big red did in 1973. Boy did we need a hero then And boy we sure could use one now.
ORRRRRRRRRRRRRRB is coming with giant strides.GOOSEBUMPS ON THAT.
We met Orb at Claiborne Farm in March 2016. He was in Secretariat's old paddock. Beautiful horse. His 2013 Derby win is awesome. Heart, mud, and guts!
I was at Claiborne the morning of the race. Was pretty cool to see the barn he was born in, then immediately drive to Churchill and see him win the Derby that same day.
I thought this race eeriely paralleled the Kentucky Derby 40 years before that. I was hoping Orb would be a Triple Crown Winner!
"OOOORRRRBBBBB! IS COMING WITH STRONG STRIDES AT THE CENTER OF THE TRACK!"
Senior Quote goals.
Goosebumps every time
Kinda caught him off gaurd!
I saw this race from my spot on the backside that I have occupied for the past 5 years - while the horses were circling in front of us for the post parade all of the other horses were fretting, prancing & nervous - Orb was calm, cool & collected and the look he gave me as he passed by was of pure confidence
This still stands as one of my favorite KDs. Without this race, especially Orb, I wouldn't be such a huge horse racing fanatic.
Unbelievable run by Orb, he was third from last position and came strong!
Thrift Store
We just visited Orb at Claiborne Farms and he is living the life of luxury.
Great connections for a super horse...living a dream...congradulations even in 2021 it's exciting!!!
Too bad he wasn’t a Super horse
It was thrilling to watch Orb pass the finish line in person! the KY derby was the best time ever..even in the rain! Now I have to go EVERY year...now on to Baltimore!

driver3596 great observation ! And at 2:26 looks like Jockey no. 5 tried to get close to Orb and whip him.
I believe Johnny V was turning his head to the right as Normandy Invasion was tired and starting to lug his way. I think Johnny was trying to move him out a bit more to prevent getting bumped.

I think he knew!
Absolute star studded race, so many great horses came outta this race.
OOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRB!
I won like $1500 that day, with orb and I hit a any order top 3 horse! Awesome finish!!!
amazing finish I will root for orb all the way in the next race and hope orb takes the triple.Btw thanks for uploading this as I was busy today and missed it on tv

Orb was looking at the crowd while he was making his move down the homestretch like "where my haters at?!"
I had to watch a weird amount of this video to be sure it wasn't in fact a McElroy bit.
Had ORB
One of my only derby winners ever
my only derby pick that has won
WHAT A RIDE BY ROSARIO! ORB was lengths from the inside rail and still came home fastest of all
Revolutionary was so close... Calvin Borel almost had his 4th win
I totally LOVE Orb! He's just great and I so hoped that he'd win the Derby! You did it, boy! Looking forward to the Preakness. ;)
Watch this with the automatic closed captioning.
Just read that Orb is being retired to "stand." So, I thought of watching this again. Still awesome. Classic. May Orb be fruitful and multiply :)
I don't really follow horse racing until this time of year, but I know one thing is certain.

CONGRATS ORB

Good sportsmanship at the end
And I am still getting chills. What a stretch it was !
Orb must be very good! I know nothing about his form but when you see AP Indy on one side of pedigree and Unbridled on the other, you have to conclude that Orb is one hell of a potential stallion and must be extremely valuable.relative to other Kentucky Derby winners.
ORRRB is coming with giant strides in the center of the track- Larry Collmus.
i agree, i was excited to see him win
The announcer says orb with so much enthusiasm. "ORB! HAS WON THE KENTUCKY DERBY!"
Orb has been my internet avatar for 2 decades....orb74 to be exact....this race ranks #1 for that alone...
Wonderful finish!
Dont take anything away from Da Tara, a Tiznow horse trained by Zito and was primed for the mile and a half ... he went wire to wire to prove that
Anybody else notice the similarities of this race and the Kentucky Derby run 40 years before this?
When Orb grabs the lead he veered right causing Golden Soul to stop his push and move right, because he won by 2 lengths he wasn't disqualified, if it was by a neck Golden soul is your winner..
Golden Soul should have had it!
I just saw Orb at Claiborne so watching this replay and reading some of the comments. I'm not sure what you're looking at but Orb and Golden Soul don't even come remotely close to touching. Stormyy Weatherr - Decepticon Why? He was blown away by Orb in the stretch
"ORRRRRRRRRRBBB!!!" at 2:20 is one of the most epic things ever.
I like this video upload The picture and sound clarity. Good job.
And go Orb! 1 down, 2 to go. You can do it!
weres the grass on the race track?
what a fantastic race, ORB BABY
Putting blinkers on for the first time..Why do I feel like Palace Malice was used as a rabbit in this race?
With that pace too
@@ken45y most horses setting that kind of pace would have finished dead last
Had my eye on this horse for weeks! And then he had my lucky number 16 for the race. Of course he was gonna win ;) no, but that was one hell of a race! nice run, bud!
Great run

That horse came from a long way back wow!
"OORRRBBBBB!!!!" Best commentating ever.
Excelente competencia nunca he podido asistir al Derby de Kentucky y no quiero morirme subir al menos a un solo Derby de Kentucky
Good sport. I like it
I'm rooting for ORB.

Came from so far back!!!
ORB: from 3rd slowest to an easy win (y) wow
i doubt that but very good horse no question and getting better with each race great trainer/jockey combo as well
I think you are right about his tactics. Baffert is going to try to win this race just like Bode almost pulled it off last year and Paynter in the Belmont. He will need a Shackleford type effort. You may be right. I'm betting against it.
My horse won!!! a great race in spite of challenging track conditions.
Crossing my fingers for Orb on Saturday in Baltimore.. Really hope he wins the Preakness! Great shot with J.Rosario as jockey! I bet daily on horses but on Saturday I'm just a fan. Besides Orb pays 1-1.
beautiful race
2:20 love it ORRRRRRRRRRRB!
the derby is on every first saturday in may
What a race!
Only thing that came to mind... "I'm sick of this dirt, let's get rollin"
wow. that was a hell of a run by orb.
Sometimes the best horse does win the derby=ORB
PHENOMENAL...
sounds great! Maybe he'll win the Preak next? I like him; he's got a great name! ORB!
That was awesome
I love that jockey fist bump.
Will Take Charge was coming with ORB but then got blocked and ran into some traffic. He's definitely worth a look in the Preakness.
I think G. Charlie will get caught up in all of the front end speed in this race. Titletown Five is going to make the lead uneasy for Goldencents and G. Charlie setting it up for the closers. G. Charlie had a great Sunland Derby but there were records set the whole day because the track was so hard and fast that day. We'll see.
He loves the Slop! His father was a mudder, his mother was a mudder!
Nice Video!

Governor Charlie + Preakness = Goodnight Orb
They really don't feel that much. It's the 'crack' that tends to do more than the impact. And, especially when whipping behind, the number flag catches most of the impact.
It'll be tough to run that type of race in the Belmont. 1 1/2 miles is too far for closers.
Orb might just be the next secretariat.
I rewatch this time and time again only for the commentator. Who is he?
Finalmente, el preparador Shug McCaughey pudo ganar un Derby de Kentucky ¡Lo felicito! ¡Siempre mereció ganar la Carrera de las Rosas! ¡También felicito al jinete Joel Rosario!
Did you guys see Calvin Borel? He almost pulled off a Mind that Bird race. Hugged the rail the whole way.
Who names these horses?
fred smith
