- The short answer here is any breed can do Endurance. The thing I love about the sport is that there is no wrong breed, no wrong tack, no wrong background, no wrong outfit, it is such an inclusive and diverse sport that really opens its arms wide to all sort of people and ponies. For an excellent example of this have a look at this Endurance Riders UK Facebook link: / 3198998893512912
Now at the top FEI level you'll be hard pushed to find anything but an Arab. This is because they are born and bred for the job. Excellent stamina, speed, suspension and cardiovascular capacity. They have the determination, grit and fire in their souls needed for the longer distances.
However this doesn't mean that native or other breeds don't make it to the ultimate 160km distance, because they do. Especially with the mindset of one horse, one rider, one day, 160k, not focusing on speed or placings but the partnership of achieving that kind of feat. The natives statistically might not be as fast, might not have as quick heart rate recoveries but they can go all day at a fair pace. In my experience natives need more training, more vigorous crewing and longer to recover but boy did I learn a lot from them.
So no matter what kind of horse you have as long as they are sound and fairly fit you can give Endurance a go. Because it is one of the best ways to learn how to keep your horse fit, happy and healthy over any type of terrain, and its something all equestrian disciplines would benefit from.
Thanks for watching,
Beth
I'm so sad that I didn't discover endurance until my TB/appy mare was older. She's forward, curious, and brave as can be. 8 hour trail rides were nothing to her. She's 30 now, and we're still hitting the trail for easy hour long rides! My next horse will be a Lippitt Morgan, and I can't wait to learn about the sport together.
Beth is very down to earth, very generous with knowlege sharing. And she knows her stuff!!! More power to her!!!
I compete on a 135 cm Connemara Pony. Greetings from Germany.
Hi! That's lovely, connemaras make great endurance ponies 👍
I'm starting my barrel racer. His amazing. He has arab in him. But his destined for greatness. Really. His my first I trained alone. IV been riding since walking and track rider at Flemmington. I'm really excited
Another brilliant video... love watching them as they’re so encouraging Thankyou!
Thank you Claire, glad to hear you enjoy them x
Really helpful video thank you Beth! I’m super keen to get started in endurance with my Anglo Arab mare. The only problem is she is very reactive around other horses and I know there is no way she would cope with other horses passing her. Any tips with how to go about improving this? Alison.
Hey Alison, Practice makes perfect really. Even starting in hand with another horse going past and slowly progressing to riding out with someone. 99% of the time anyone passing will ask and give you time to stop, turn around, move out the way, whichever you prefer and they should walk past if you request it, most would walk or slowly trot past. Make sure you have a green and red ribbon in her tail to give others a heads up too. With my friends really reactive horse, we got it used to my horse and then for her first rides I was always on the outside of her giving some protection. She's a star now. On 40km I would say about 5-10 people would pass you so it's not loads and loads, usually in ones or a maximum group of 4. I have even taken my youngster to the local equestrian centre on a show day just to walk him around and get used to lots going on. X
You do wonderful videos! Your horses are absolutely lovely!
Wonderful video thank you! Love your positive attitude 😍
I have a standard bred that does endurance and is great at it
Finnhorses are super versatile; mine does pretty much anything I can think of. She's a feisty one. At 155cm she is fine for lower levels- one has even seen in international competitions.😁🐴
I've seen one at FEI, they're such tough little horses 😍
@@bethendurance Oh you have! Yeah they are.😁 Usually bulkier but sporty ones are better at endurance.
In india our native breeds are giving great results qualified 80 and will now do their 1* qualification
Are they the ones with the curly ears? They look awesome! X
@@bethendurance yes they are the ones with curly ears awsome appearance anx endurace presented the horse in 2 min 40 sec after 80km
@@darshivshah3026 marwari horse
Where do you get the tack from as would love to start endurance with my girl it looks like so much fun
The tack is from pioneer endurance, the lady who makes it is called Zoe, she'll talk you through everything you need to know as everything is made bespoke x
Could you please talk a little bit more about criollos on endurance ridding perspective?
I don't really know that much about them, other than they are well known for their hardiness and make good endurance horses x
One day i'm going to be competing on a mustang (America's feral horses)! Hopefully genetics will be on my side and they'll have good feet. I've already picked a few herds that produce nice movers and are known to be very athletic
That would be so awesome! Good luck finding your perfect mustang partner 😍 x
Love this xxx
Mules are exceptional in endurance!
