PSA: Watch the entire video objectively then use some reasoning before you comment 😂 This video is highlighting why Better Man has failed in the box office. This isn't a review. The creative decisions and the way they decided to market it was not tailored to the mainstream...even though it had a mainstream budget. I don't discuss whether the film itself is good or bad. I didn't realise this was something I was going to have to explain 🥲
You can't make a niche movie on a mainstream budget. This movie shouldn't have been made this way.

I'm from the US, and I'm astounded they expected us to remember him at all. He had like, one hit in the 90s, then disappeared. Now, 30 years later he appears with a biopic? WTF?

I think they should marketed straight up like “I’m Robbie Williams some you may not know me…and some of you do. I think most can relate so here’s my story…and not a chimp” rather than “I’m Robbie Williams of course you know me. I’m awesome and a chimp so watch this”

Yeah, the hubris of Robbie Williams to assume that people will be able to just infer who he is based on name alone is really telling.
Imagine if the movie was called "Robbie Williams: A Better Man" or something and instead of the pretentious chimp nonsense he was just incredibly competently digitally de-aged.

I think the monkey was a fantastic idea, but the problem is no one knows who he is. And if you're spending £110 million plus marketing, you need to have a solid base before doing that. You could make a Taylor Swift film and have her played by a CGI swan as she's Taylor Swift. No one in America knows Robbie Williams, so that budget can't be made back.

Thank you for your commentary, however, it's not just critics who love Better Man, but normal punters as well. Those of us who saw Better Man loved it. I remember Robbie Williams and Take That, they were part of the musical soundtrack for my youth. People who were not old enough to remember the 90s/2000s in the UK and Europe, cannot begin to comprehend how massive he was. He was part of the Zeitgeist. As well as playing the pyramid stage in Glastonbury in 1998, he did 3 gigs at Knebworth which were, until Taylor Swift recently took the record, the largest crowds that anyone had ever performed before. I wasn't even a particular fan. That said, I always had a bit of crush on Mark Owen and Robbie Williams. When I first saw ads for the movie, my initial reaction was how very Robbie Williamsesque to have himself portrayed by a bloody monkey. However, I found the whole discourse about the movie very bizarre. You say for many the cgi monkey left them confused and put them off. Yes it's a cgi monkey, but it's hardly a very difficult metaphor to understand, as you stated in the video; and unless you have a complete phobia to monkeys, that in itself shouldn't put you off. Also I presume you're talking about those who watched the trailer, because for those who saw the film, myself included, all say the same thing, you get used to the monkey within the first few minutes of the film and it becomes "normal". Everyone in the film reacts to "Robbie" normally and we the audience do the same. I'm sure there's a whole psychological element to this, but by doing something as alienating as having a human portrayed as a chimp, it somehow works to heighten his humanity and our ability to empathise with him. That is masterly film making. This is greatly helped by the motion capture work of the actor Jonno Davies, which is first class and the facial expressions which are so well rendered, in particular the eyes.
"But, but, I've never heard of Robbie Williams" say many Americans. That's fair enough but google is your friend and who only goes to films about people you know, events that you're familiar with. Isn't part of the experience of any art form, music, films, theatre, the visual arts, discovering something new. Back to Better Man, that initial reaction by many Americans, 'who the hell is this guy anyway'; wouldn't have been so bad if people had left the discourse there, But no, the pearl clutching outrage was far more extensive. People seemed angry. How very dare they release a film in the USA about someone most Americans don't know and that looks a bit weird and different. People moan about remakes and franchises, boring formulaic movies, but when a film maker takes risks and tries something different, many go radio rental and don't even want to engage. What happened to intellectual curiosity?
This film was financed independently by a number of production companies and various film incentive funds from the Australian government. Paramount bought the distribution rights. In releasing the movie, they probably thought people would approach it with some sort of curiosity and an open mind, rather than hatred from social media and a concerted effort to drown it at birth. I've never seen anything like this before over a movie. The film has made $17M worldwide so far, and is yet to open in South America, and on the African and Asian continents. Robbie Williams wasn't just popular in the UK and Europe. He's doing a world tour this year and has just completed sell out shows in Cape Town and Pretoria. His UK shows are sold out, save a few VIP packages left in Bath and Manchester etc. I tried to get ticket for London in June, nada. I appreciate the size of the US market, and this movie is going to lose alot of money, but you started your video by framing it as making $1.9M at the box office on a budget of $110M, that's $1.9M the US box office.
The reasons the budget is so high for Better Man are (i) the CGI work from Wētā FX. (ii) Also, Better Man lost “millions of pounds” according to Gracey, when Queen Elizabeth II died. The film makers had arranged for London's Regent Street to be shut down for four nights so they could film a huge song and dance number to Rock DJ. Regent's Street is not owned by Westminster Council it is Crown Property, so you know the British Royal Family charged an arm and a leg for permission. Regent St is a major , major artery in the road system of central London, so closing it down for 4 nights is a huge and costly deal, but it was done. Then Queen Lizzie goes and dies before the filming is complete and the production had to be closed down, because we had 10 days of mourning in this country!! Gracey said: "So we lost all of the money. There's no insurance for the death of the Queen." He added "So we lost millions of dollars, and it took another five months to get back on that street, and we had to raise the money again. And every time I watch it, I think people have no idea how close we came to that not being in the film."
If people can cope with witches with green faces and flying monkeys in Wicked, Better Man should be a breeze. We'd have the soul less rendition of one part of Bob Dylan's life in A Complete Unknown, which despite the star turns of Chalamet and Norton, gave us nothing new for the genre. And then there is the abomination that is Emilia Perez. All these films have been showered with awards and sizeable box office returns, whilst the far superior IMO, Better Man is ignored and has think pieces which (some certainly in tone) gleefully tell us why it didn't make money and is a financial flop. BTW, I'm not saying you took that tone.
The biggest irony is that THIS film with it's cgi monkey and pop star that people either don't know, don't feel is worthy of a biopic or not relevant etc, IS by a country mile, one of the most human and relatable films many people have seen in a long time. It resonates and has something to say about the human condition because of it emotional depth, authenticity and above all honesty. That is why people react to it positively so it.
And it was a very, very good idea to have made this movie. If film makers don't make bold decisions, cinema stagnates. One of my all time favourite films is Night of the Hunter (1955), directed by the great British actor Charles Laughton. It was beautifully shot, at times dreamlike and surreal, striking black and white cinematography, against a fairly conventional story of criminals, hidden loot and evil on the prowl. It was box office failure. The film's estimated budget was $795,000 and The film's worldwide gross was $5,105. Laughton never made another movie. It's now very highly regarded as a classic crime noir and cinema which shows just how far you can take the medium when you have the vision, the integrity and the guts to do so.
Bearing in mind the themes of Better Man, it's almost on brand that Robbie Williams and film would end up causing so much controversy and be getting a metaphorical kicking and being ridiculed; but still producing something of critical and audience acclaim.
I'll just keep making repeat visits, whilst it's still in the cinema in London, and help to bolster it's meagre box office.

Thank you for sharing! I always welcome different opinions about movies on this channel!
I loved the additional information and context you provided. I will agree with you that film makers SHOULD be bold and make bold decisions when it comes to making movies. HOWEVER, at the end of the day Hollywood is still a business. I think, if you know you want to be bold with a concept for a new movie, you have to address with you have a high enough TAM (Total Addressable Market) to warrant a high production cost.
Better Man's TAM didn't warrant the $110 million budget. For me, I think the reason this movie shouldn't have been made, or at least shouldn't have been made in THIS manner, is because there just wasn't enough people interested enough to actually GO TO the cinema to watch this movie, no matter HOW GOOD the film was.
Thank you once again for sharing your thoughts!

Also I disagree with this take. Have you seen the movie? The issue here isn’t that they shouldn’t have made the film or that Robbie isn’t famous, in fact in my view fact this movie would be released in America at this cost is baked into the themes of the movie. The real issue is it wasn’t marketed as well as it should have been.. the could be due to the fact the studio was sold this year and as they actually only spent 25 mill acquiring the film it slipped down the priority list. There were clearly mistakes made here but the answer isn’t, take less risks or spend less money on trusted creative directors. If the movie was bad I’d agree
