I have so many fond memories of looking up analysis' of the Matrix online when I was a kid. I think its probably the first movie I ever did that for. I remember all the people talking about the green, and the Alice in Wonderland references, and philosophy. Its probably why I enjoy movie analysis so much now but I never realized it until now.

John Wash (Motion Graphics) did the billboard animation for Blade Runner. Other films he worked on included Escape from New York and Dark Star, Star Wars IV, notable for the 3d vector graphics and wireframe models. Early green and blue on black designs. Carpenter brought him in every time he needed stuff done on the cheap.
Remember the first time you played Battlezone at the arcades Rob? Blew everyone away by how futuristic it seemed to behold; a beauty in simplicity.

Fantastic video, what’s interesting is that both films were re-colorized after their initial theatrical releases. The first Matrix film was originally not nearly as green tinted (the very first dvd release has a different color palette) but the blu ray was given a more green look to better match Reloaded & Revolutions which had a much more green look to them. The same with Blade Runner, The Final Cut was given a cool blue look (probably to give it an even more futuristic feeling) while the theatrical & previous versions were not tinted in such a way

There is a color-codified subtext in the movie EyeWideShut (that is even hinted at during the course of the story). I was never able to decode that subtext.
IN MY OPINION , if we take the movie at face value, the codification is manifested threefold:
No 1: The Colours of the rainbow, contextualiszed (purposefully revealed) in certain scenes of the movie (actually througout the majority of the movie).
No 2: The Medium, dominance and (sometimes) the object, the colours are attached to.
No 3: This is a big maybe: The colours are also attributed objectively attributed to Christmas(-decoration) and have a inherent Christmas-related meaning outside of the movie (i.e. in Western Culture of Christmas).
---> I think ALL THREE dimensions are interconnected (i.e. part of Kubriks vision). Since all 3 seem to flow together and since I am not culturally educated enough (and couldn´t find anything online about No 3), I was never able/ willing to decode the chiffre.
Do you think No 3 is actually part of the code?
Since Kubrik wasn´t able to finalise the movie, how can we read the whole movie as an unmitigated piece of art?

I really love how all the green in the Matrix gives it an uncanny 'concrete jungle' atmosphere. Its a big city and everything is fake but green is everywhere like foilage. Then on the outside there's still no actual real green because it's post apocalyptic and the sun is blocked out. The only green they have is in computer screens and in the matrix.

Looking back at the Matrix it was actually anachronistic for Neo's computer to have Green Text. By 1999 almost everybody had computers with color monitors. Green Phosphorous Monochrome Monitors were starting to be replaced commercially by color monitors in late 80's. By 1999 virtually everybody had upgraded to Color Monitors except broke college kids. Neo had a good job and was some kind of Computer Hacker he'd certainly have the latest and greatest in computer tech. I have to assume they used the Green Phosphorous as a stylistic choice.

13:19 Ridley Scott got convinced that The Matrix tint was the way forward for sci-fi's so that's why he color graded Blade Runner The Final Cut green rather than stick to the colors of the universe he created (with Philip k. Dick).
The Directors Cut is probably the correct version of Blade Runner.
I think green tint is hit or miss. It obviously works in The Matrix, but looks horrible in Ozark, although everything looks horrible in Ozark.
Thank God Ridley Scott didn't have anything to do with Lawrence of Arabia or else we would see "the platinum gold edition" with Lightroom LUT's forced upon it.

Well, if you dig deeper, the Blade Runner movie is existential of who am i, why am i here enveloped in a dystopian world.
I hate to break it to you, kids, we are not free.
Never were... We are slaves as Scott tried to relay this message to you.
The Matrix is indeed everything you stated Rob but it parallels our reality.
The one scene that bothers to me to this day is when the Wachowski brothers emphasized an "accident" in the real world on the ship.
Was it an accident or a transcendent act of "God" of fate?
This is why the Matrix referenced Buddhism and Hinduism.
Is life "Fated" or just an accident wherein the individual is entrapped by the Universe just as we are trapped by Big Brother.
Our escape is to discard our need to be trapped by our carnal desires and hate and selfishness which represents destruction.
Doing so, we achieve a higher plane of existence.
Understand, our enemy is not Big Brother but ourselves.
    The flesh is an illusion...
The only thing real is the values of good and evil.
We are flesh encoded with a free moral shapable "clay" of our soul like the dna code.
Our eye color is not important nor our hair color or anything of flesh but that which resides in our "soul."
Inadvertently, the Agent made a sly remark about this by comparing humans to viruses which are just vectors carrying the code of destruction.
If you believe in a God or whatever of life after death then truly our carnal lives are an illusion we must accept and strive for the Oneness of love.
Doing so, we escape the true enemy, "ourselves" and ultimately are able to experience:
Freedom...In the next life in our higher selves...
Also, kids, there is a God...
Marcus Aurelius stated it the best, a man of self-discipline like a Buddhist:
Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.
