The ending of this song is one of the few things in my life to make my jaw uncontrollably drop. The moment it breaks into Cedric just wailing for a bit before the final "who brought me here"... It's overpowering, chill-inducing, even emotional. There's so much fear and desparation in his voice, but with all the control and beauty of something straight out of the final moments of a tragic opera. Absolutely mind-blowing song, and the ending leaves me floored every time.

That first tour .... they were so precise and on point live. I made my ride wait even though he was pissed - HAD to hear this live. Sounded EXACTLY like the album.

listening to music & you stumble over greatness, it should be an INCLUSIVE thing, not, "oh, I'm a ________fan, & whatever you've got there will NEVER match up." And the two bands (along with my REAL favorite band, Fair to Midland) have their own wheelhouse, but also have ELEMENTS that cut across the realms.

@@nickson1431 This is the first week I've been listening to The Mars Volta and I can tell that I'm in for the long haul on this one. I cannot stop listening to De-Loused and I've been slowly making my way through their other records as well. They are extremely good and De-Loused is just so insanely unique that I don't think it's a stretch to call it a masterpiece. It's their Court of the Crimson King.
A lot of Cedric's lyrics don't have a whole lot of meaning but they do on this album. All the songs on this album tells a story about a man named Cerpin Taxt who OD's on a combination of morphine and rat poison and is left in a coma. The songs detail the experiences he has while in he's in the coma. At the end of the album, he wakes up and realizes that he prefers his experiences in the coma more than the real world, so he commits suicide.
Back then he Cedric was on $1000 of weed and maybe a few other drugs a week
Which is even better when you realize it's based on the story of Cedric and Omar's musician friend from El Paso, Julio Venegas.
I see their lyrics a bit like Edward Lear poems, only semi-nonsensical. The individual phrases don't exactly work in any literal sense, but taken as a whole they create a sort of collage representing the story of Cerpin Taxt.

This entire album is brilliant. Drunkenship of Lanterns is my favorite track. But really awesome to listen to straight through as an album. The beachy type tones may come from the Red Hot Chili Peppers influence. In fact, Flea is the bassist here.
Also John Frusciante formerly of RHCP plays that computer guitar sound in the middle.
Drunkship is also my favorite. With this being my close number 2.
Most of TMV albums are best listened in their entirety, some of the tracks flow into each other well. They also carry some kind of similar theme
Just FYI Flea didnt write the original bass lines. Ralph Jasso wrote a bunch of them. Flea kept the ideas and did a tweak here and there.
Cicatriz esp is probably my favorite but its hard because I really like every song.
It's so enjoyable to see someone go on a Mars Volta trip for the first time.

The start of this song hits so hard when you listen to the full album. Real ones know
Big TMV fan. The quote about the rhythm section is dead on, if you concentrate on what they're playing the chaos around them comes together. As far as the lyrics go while there is a lot of nonsense there is a story at least on this album. As a whole Deloused is my favorite album but some of my favorite songs are from other albums. L'via L'viaquez from Francis the Mute and Viscera Eyes from Amputecture both have amazing grooves I think you would dig.
The sound of Mars Volta is absolutely brilliant. The music is like been thrown in the middle of chaotic hundred men sword fight and occasionally getting to see the serenity of the moonlight outside where birds are singing. Like been washed away to the storming sea, nearly drowning and then getting wonderful cold air into your exploding lungs. Do I make any sense? I really love Mars Volta! Their like a hard drug, which takes you to a chaotic roller coaster ride and when it's over, you've got to get some more immediately.
Complete sense. They are my heroin.
I wouldn't describe it any other way. Also very strong surrealism vibes from their music, like a violent, twisted Salvador Dali work, in audio form.
Have I finally found people that love the mars volta as much as I do? I thought I was the only fan left.
This full-length debut still intrigues as much as it did when I bought it back in the early 00s.
The Mars Volta really took the idea of progressive music and transported it to the new century without just rehashing retro ideas.
Fun fact, this album was produced by rick rubin. Who worked with everyone from Jay-z to aerosmith and run-dmc's famous "walk this way" to tom petty and way too many others to name.
There are some interesting stories floating around about how he made them do take after take for this record and kind of polished them up, from some wiley young adults to musicians.
Flea really showed off on this song in particular when he recorded this album with them. The groove on this is about as funky as you can fkin get.
This group evolved quite a lot throughout their time before they disbanded so it would be interesting to see you react to their more recent material. Their album Noctourniquet features Deantoni Parks on the drums and his style is drastically different to Jon Theodore's. It's probably my favorite album from them but some people really dislike it.
Some songs just release so much dopamine for me, and damn this one does it so good.
Top stuff as always Jim. It can be full on and chaotic, but like Tool it takes many listens to decipher what each instrument is actually doing and why it sounds so good. In my opinion they are the best prog-rock band of the last 20 years. With this album being their magnum opus. Every musician was at the peak of their abilities and it shows. Their live shows were on a whole other level. I still can't rap my head around Jon Theodore's drumming. I'd strongly recommend listening to more tracks off this album and The Mars Volta in general. You Sir, will not be disappointed. Have a great weekend :)
A lot of TMV fans would tell you that their best album is Frances the Mute haha. But I really love their first album.

Jim Newstead Im not sure if Bill D is talking about something else or what, but Cassandra Gemini is actually 32 minutes long. It is indeed a masterpiece though, i just listened to it all the way through while i was working a few hours ago actually. If your up for the task, that is definitely a wonderful song to react to.
If we're doing Mars Volta then I see no reason why you shouldn't dip a toe into the At The Drive In catalog as well. Particularly the song Cosmonaut great review I enjoy them lots thanks!

If the bass sounds amazing...there's a reason for that lol. Flea played bass in the studio for the recording of this album. For amputechture, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez taught most of the guitar parts to John Frusciante, having him record them while Rodriguez-Lopez took over the role of producer. Flea and John Frusciante both are "the secret members" of TMV, contributing a lot to their recordings.

If you want to go balls deep with this band, I suggest listening to Frances The Mute from start to finish. In my view, you can try and listen to individual tracks but it only makes sense as an album. It watch it. On my top 5 albums of all time. Flea plays trumpet on that one, a treat if you're up for it.
Great choice, but if you'd like to hear them from another perspective, have a listen to Televators from the same album. Incredible song but the exact opposite of the chaos. You'll love it.
This is the very first song I heard by them when I was 17, it changed my whole musical perception at the time. This made me absolutely obsessed with the band.

Ive always had a hard time believing that. Ruben is a terrible producer most of the time, but this album sounds flawless.
TheAlibabatree nah, it suffers massively from his production. It’s like a lot of his other albums from the aughts in that the volume was turned so high that the dynamics are crunched beyond repair and there’s clipping all over the place. His production is the biggest flaw the album has.

Cicatriz ESP was the first song I ever heard by them and the thought ‘ organized chaos ‘ came to mind fir me too but way more intense and strong . If you haven’t listened to it yet it’s off this same cd and I would recommend you 👂 listen to it .. I’m sure you’ll love it
Goliath, Tetragrammaton, Agadez, Askeios, L'Via L'viaquez, they're all Great. And LIvce - seen them thrice. Fucking unbelievable. Omar (Guitarist/writer) will just start improvising, the rest of the band, eyes locked on him to anticipate the beautiful madness about to explode from him.
I'm pretty sure I had the same series of expressions on my face when I first heard this song . . .

I have been listening to these albums ( deloused and frances) a year or two after release on vinyl and these records have a special status in my record collection....sometimes I look at them ....shall I play this album?... I always know that when I do so...I will listen to them exclusively for the next few weeks or so....it takes a lot of commitment as a listener to go into the adventure of listening to Mars Volta....these not just albums to pick up and play only one song....
God I love how you actually take in the music without stopping it and blathering. Thanks to your last video I’ve been WAY into Amputechture. Almost forgot how good that album was. Stoked to see what you think of this one.

Yes they are amazing live. I saw them open for A Perfect Circle. I didn’t realize or appreciate what I saw at the time. It was hard because I didn’t know anything about them. How lucky I was to witness this entire album live. Great song and band.
You have to listen to this track with the point in mind that this is the end of an album. A journey through an insane story that's coming to a conclusion. Gives weight to the absolute epicness.

Absolutely love Deloused in the Comatorium as a whole, and it was my first TMV album to listen, but I have to say that after listening to Frances the Mute a few times, it has become my absolute favourite from them, and in fact I now consider it one of the best albums of the last 20 years.
Fun fact, as mentioned before Flea (RHCP) plays the bass here but he also plays the trumpet on Frances the Mute. Another fun fact, some of their album covers were designed by Storm Thorgerson, the same one who designed the prism cover for Dark Side of the Moon, and most PF album covers.
I remember picking up this album at the mall back in 05. The drum breakdown from drunkship lanterns was one of the previews when you scanned on the headphone kiosk. It blew my mind then and it still does now. To this day I have never heard a band that tops TMV in the realm of prog and rock. I can only compare it to hearing Led Zeppelin for the first time. It just hits different. Untouchable band and album. Thanks for doing Cerpin Taxt, very entertaining.
That build/transition around the @8:00 mark is one of my favorite pieces of musical history. That lead Omar plays is Cosmic... Then again, Aren't they all?!
Thanks for this one Jim ! Great song choice. Personally I've seen TMV live 6 times and they never disappointed. The first time I caught them they played for over 3 hours !! Well worth the ticket price.
There are some good quality live recordings on RUclips. There's a YAHOO live set with lots of camera angles and is broken up by the different songs. They even performed on a late night talk show here in the states at one time which I've seen posted here.
For a next song I would recommend either Viscera Eyes, or Ouroboros.

Jim, I discovered you because of your Day of the Baphomets review in June. I’ve been anxiously awaiting the arrival of another. When I saw this notification the other day it felt like Christmas morning (ok, maybe that’s a bit much but you get the idea).
One of my favorite bands ever. I get so much joy out of watching people discover them for the first time but it happens so seldom these days. Excellent review and on par. You can’t really go wrong with listening to any one particular song but I do highly recommend listening to their albums from start to finish. The first few anyway.
As for watching them live. One day perhaps there will be a new iteration of the band (unfortunately the keyboardist has passed away) but for now... a deep dive on the tube would do just fine.

This whole album was pretty great.
Your facial expression during the end of the song ("who brought me here? Who turned it off?") was the exact same as mine. Ive been listening to this album (selective picks) for 5 years but just a couple months ago I listened to take the veil all the way and that ending I referenced earlier is my favorite thing ever.
And just know that the bass player is Flea from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers on this record since you liked the bass so much. He also plays trumpet on their next album Frances the Mute. John Frusciante also plays guitar on Cicatriz on this album, L'via L'viaquez on Frances the Mute and most of the guitar on the Amputechture album.

There is a live video of them performing the song Goliath from the Yahoo sessions. If you want to see them live that video is crazy.
Unfortunately, you won't be able to see them live for the foreseeable future, as the singer and guitarist have disbanded the group in 2012 to reform their previous one, At The Drive-In. There's quite a number of live performances available on RUclips though, if you want to get an idea. I had the chance to see them on the tour for their Octahedron album, it was a great show. 3+ hours of a very psychedelic experience that has stuck with me to this day.
It seems that they've indicated a desire to reunite TMV at some point in the future, so all hope is not lost. Fingers crossed!
Even if you never do a reaction video for it, check out "Vedamalady". It's got some gorgeous melodies and is rather accessible and a bit less chaotic than some of their craziest stuff. I also really REALLY enjoy Cygnus....Vismund Cygnus, that one is amazing, something more analogous to the song in this video. Thanks again Jim, always love your reactions. It's great to vicariously relive your first time hearing a piece of music and to see the reaction to unexpected changes and interesting parts.

When I listen to the mars volta, I always think of a quote from Terrry Pratchett (not sure it's his but he use it) "Chaos always beats order, because it's better organized".
It's a behemoth but Cassandra Gemini, you should definitely do eventually. It's their masterpiece. It's super long, but calling it a song doesnt do it justice. It's a journey. It's an experience. It's the Everest of what the Volta was. They have amazing songs, but this is them at their peak.

My favorite part about these reaction videos (especially pertaining to De-Loused tracks) is the fact almost all of them describe this chaotic energy that somehow "works" in some way. Without knowing the recording style of ORL they wouldnt know that a lot of these album were recorded under intense scrutiny from ORL. The tracks on De-loused are a precursor to the epic hands-on nature of Omar; always tinkering and searching for that exact "sound" he felt the album needed. What a true testament of craftsmanship TMV encapsulates.
Their best album! Their EP is really good too. I recommend reacting to this whole album.

This is amazing, I keep listening this music after so many years and I still love it. I would definitely suggest you "Landmines" and "Winslow" by Rishloo, I think you will enjoy as well!
If it can be believed, seeing them live is even more chaotic. They basically take the opportunity to improvise their songs further and go off on complete tangents. Very enjoyable though!

Nonsensical. They follow an underlying story based on their best friend that had a substance addiction and committed suicide. This is a concept album based on a crazy story loosely based on their friends life. But the story is pretty nuts. But honestly when you put the story together with the album it’s absolute magic. My favorite album of all time
