Northern Pakistan, Kalash People

  • This video shows the daily life of the Kalash people in Northern Pakistan. It is the first part of a series of tourist videos filmed in N Pakistan in summer 2015. Please share this film.
    Our holiday was booked in the UK with Travelpak UK and operated by Karakorum Nature and Discovery Pakistan.
    The culture of the Kalash people is unique and differs completely from the various Islamic ethnic groups surrounding them. They are polytheists and nature plays a highly significant and spiritual role in their daily life. As part of their religious tradition, sacrifices are offered and festivals held to give thanks for the abundant resources of their three valleys. Kalasha Desh (the three Kalash valleys) is made up of two distinct cultural areas, the valleys of Rumbur and Brumbret forming one, and Birir valley the other; Birir valley being the most traditional of the two. Kalash mythology and folklore has been wrongly compared to that of ancient Greece, but they are much closer to Indo-Iranian (pre-Zoroastrian Vedic) traditions. Some of the Kalash people claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great's soldiers; however, extensive genetic testing has shown no connection. The Kalash have fascinated anthropologists due to their unique culture.
    Northern Pakistan offers:
    - extraordinary mountain scenery and landscapes;
    - a plethora of cultures;
    - surprisingly good food; and
    - quality accommodation in Chitral, Skardu, Khaplu, Gilgit and Hunza, sometimes converted from historic palaces and forts.
    Above all, the extraordinary friendship and hospitality of the Pakistani people will stay with you for a very long time after your visit.

      The Kalash population has decreased from more than 80,000 to less than 3000 largely because of Muslims who will not allow other cultures to live in peace. There would be no campaign to save them had it not been for the Muslims. Sorry, but that's the truth.

    Pakistan comprises of various indigenous ethnic groups: Punjabi, Sindhi, Baloch, Pashtun, Kashmiri, Seraiki, Hunza, Kalash, Chitrali, Balti. Each with their own language and culture. There are subgroups of some ethnic groups as well. e.g. Pahari Punjabi, Potohari, Hindko, etc.
    There are few foriegn migrants like Hazara people (Persian speaking people who originally Turko-Mongols from Central Asia). Also immigrants from India known as "Urdu speaking". The latter mixed with natives in large numbers.

At age 70 I am learning of this culture and I wish to travel there to pay visit to the festivals and I hope that I can do that to take these wonderful memories with me to my grave. Kalash people are god's people like all other people and must have freedom to practice their beliefs and practices and be appreciated instead of conversion to destroy this ancient culture. I also hope that Kalash people take charge of travels and tourism in their own hands to earn their own money rather than others benefiting the most of the profits.

      They are albanian Illyrian pellazgian 🇦🇱🇦🇱🇦🇱🇦🇱🇦🇱🇦🇱 when ancient Illyrian macedon Alexander the Great (leka i madh) invaded the Persian empire which included Pakistan, the soldiers of leka settled down there. Around the mountains of the Hindu Kush. Kalash derives from the albanian word kalaja kala which means castle. I can also see many albanian Illyrian signs. These people are white arjan people. The rest of Pakistani India are Asian colour.

      Shqipe Ed I think you are confusing the illyrians with the Macedonians. I get that Albanians claim to be descendants of the illyrians, but not Macedonians. The illyrians and the Macedonians were two different tribes. Macedon was an Ancient Greek kingdom. The most stupid idea however is that Macedonians were Slavs. Lmao, we know this to be false as the Slavs haven’t migrated South t the balkans by that period of time. The only people who inhabited those areas in ancient times were the Greeks, the illyrians/ dalmatians and the dacians. It was afterwards that the Slavs invaded the balkans.

      @Μαχητής Μαλάκς Unfortunately (or fortunately), the Kalash have nothing to do with greeks. They're a Pakistani people who speak an indigenous Pakistani language and follow an indigenous Pakistani religion found nowhere else in earth.

    Whole herds of Iranian tribes traveled south into Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India circa 5-7 AD, when the Turks (mixed people of East Asia and Iranian people) moved/migrated into Central Asia. Though Iranian tribes had been moving into South Asia before then from circa 1500 BC due to climatic changes in Central Asia and the Tarim Basin (Desertification).

    Glad that their culture is not diluted by outside forces. Salute Pak govt. for taking the initiative, if at all they are doing their best to preserve this part of the cultural world. Save them from relegious fanatics of all sorts. God bless them. The only help they need is provision of proper education and ways to make them self sufficient in their own land.

Thank you for sending a Hunza/Kalash delegation to Macedonia to reunite our peoples. Although 2000+ years have passed and the people of Macedonia & Pakistan have had their own seperate histories, it's good to see people still honouring ancient heritage.

      Many Pakistanis are ignorant nowadays since Pakistan got arabized and influenced by talib in certain areas so they call kalashis pagans and view them as low as they view Hindus. There are good and bad Pakistanis. Some are cruel to anyone different.

      The Kalash population has decreased from more than 80,000 to what it is today, largely because of Muslims who will not allow other cultures to live in peace. There would be no campaign to save them had it not been for the Muslims. Sorry, but that's the truth.
