  • With TRON Lightcycle Run opening at Walt Disney World, we ask the question was it worth the wait? Was it worth the wait in minutes? Was it worth the wait in years? And most importantly does TRON Lightcycle Run solve Disney World’s Tomorrowland problem or does the land of Tomorrow look out-of-date by comparison? Let’s explore all of that, up next!

You made a great point. You would think that during the 6 years of construction, Disney would have thought of something better to connect Tron to the rest of Tomorrowland.

I mean they've made some updates to tommorowland, essentially just reverting it back to the original design, but there's still too much they've not removed. I mean even the merchant of Venus sign is still there last time I was there, it's not been open since pre pandemic and is just a seating area inside.

You are absolutely right, I think the canopy being above all of Tomorrowland would have been awesome and took on what Walt would have wanted Epcot to be. Unfortunately in this environment and this economy, people aren't looking toward the future and aren't being idealistic. They are only looking at dollar signs, and it's not just Disney, it's every single company. But I love Disney and can't wait to ride Tron.

The canopy would have been awesome. I think the light cycle going throughput the land-and could have drawn people in from the main hub-but the awnings would have been enough to remake the lackluster entry buildings

    • @earlwatt7677
      @earlwatt7677 Год назад +2

The cool thing about a place like Disney is it's an escape from those dollar concerns. We go to Disney to remove ourselves from reality. They just dropped $300 million on a roller coaster. I'm sure financing the canopies would not break the bank, and would defnitely change the vibe to be futuristic. I do not think of the land as "Tomorrowland 2023." I view it as what they thought the future would be like 51 years ago when the park opened. It's still neat to see the design, the typography and the vision of what was. An actual Tomorrowland can only be what we believe the future to be now, which will immediately become dated by the next generation's vision. It's a race that can never be run or won.

Tomorrowland Super Speedway needs an overhaul: Electric vehicles sponsored by Tesla or GM, with neon lights and LED lighting. This will help greatly in carrying the Tron overhaul to the rest of the land.

No to Tesla but your point remains, needs to be EV's or what's the point? While there in Feb the cast member made a good point, its the only ride in WDW that isn't controlled by a Cast Member and is 100% controlled by the guest. He said for this reason its one of the most dangerous rides in WDW. Revamping to EV's could solve this problem as well.

I liked your comparison to new fantasyland because I do feel a Tomorrowland revamp would’ve been great, but I feel like there are more gaps in that land than just revamping the theming. Filling in the hole that is Stitch and a potential revamp of the speedway is higher on my list. With that being said, I feel that even though it was a 5 year wait, this one was worth it because we didn’t lose any capacity in the process. Disney building new rides without taking out old ones is necessary at this point to fix its most glaring issue.

Excellent video. You pretty much hit the nail on the head. Tron doesn't fix anything except perhaps more space for park-goers. It dulls out the rest of the land. I think the canopy idea is clever. You are right though... now that Tron is on it's happy way, Tomorrowland will now be ignored for other ideas. Before adding to the park, perhaps fixing what we have would be a good idea. Spruce it up while plans are being developed for other additions (like the Evil Wizards or what have you land). The problem also exists in Disneyland as well in a much worse way. In any case, it's millions of dollars away. There's a great big, expensive tomorrow....

Great idea! It's too bad Disney doesn't hire you to be an imagineer. I agree that Tomorrowland needs shade. I've also felt like there are some bare places that really need something. Like over near Carousel of Progress there's a big empty space. Plus the attraction with Stitch could be made into something else. I feel like Tomorrowland needs a lot more attention that it doesn't get.

I made two trips to Disney World during the potential time that Tron could have opened, based upon the time frame of Shanghai. Disney delayed it and I honestly can’t afford to keep coming back.
I think many like my family were willing to go but it took so long that we lost interest. I don’t think it’s going to fix Tomorrowland. Once the newness wears off, Tomorrowland is going to be dull yet again.
Your ideas would be awesome and would definitely be much better than what Disney has tried.

Saw the demonstration of the trains on the coaster when I entered Tomorrowland while braving my whole Disney World visit. And avoided the rain for shelter. The idea of having the LED canopy and more track going all over Tomorrowland to both brighten the future twice as often and protect the wanderers from the blazing sunlight is a good idea, but could also block a beautiful star marvel in the night sky.

Wish they would utilize the themes that can be found in the Disney movie Meet the Robinsons, as it did very well exploring the world of tomorrow, while also not being as of yet even close to possible for bubbles to be used to build buildings, etc.

I think the "Tomorrowland problem" can be solved by not making the land about what the future could be like in 20 or even 100 years from now. To keep from being dated, it should be about futuristic adventures that are impossible or nearly so -- faster than light travel, journeying to the earth's core, shrinking to the size of an atom, being digitized into a world of electronics, and so on. Yes, it could do with a revamp of its architecture, but even the Tron dome might appear outdated in 20 years, depending on where architectural trends go.

So, TRON will be tied in with the rest of the land, Tomorrowland’s problem would be solved and space mountain will get a nice new remixed look.

Walt’s secondary theme of Tomorrowland is travel. Go with that. I’m not talking technology (nobody can guess future technology) but rather future travel locations like Journey to the Center of the Earth, Mission Space, and the Tokyo 10,000 Leagues Under the Sea. There are a lot of examples of attractions throughout the world that could be used that are proven winners. Star Tours and Space Mountain would actually fit in this. I also love the 50’s futuristic vibe mixed with incredible lighting effects for the overall land too. If only. This fixes the “Tomorrowland Problem.”

My dream Tomorrowland revitalization for Disneyland:
    1) Remove the Star Wars Launch Bay and use it as the launch platform for Tron Lightcycle Run.
    2) Weave the Tron Lightcycle track over and through the existing show buildings and make use of the defunct people mover track/area.
    3) Move Star Tours to Galaxy’s Edge. It’ll give people one more thing to at GE and open space for a new motion simulator attraction in TL.
    4) The proposed motion simulator attraction can be revamped and re-themed much easier over the years. It can be based on new/imagined cutting edge technologies.
    5) Convert the cars in Autopia to solar powered electric vehicles. Yes, it’s not futuristic but at least those noxious gas fumes will be removed, but more importantly, it promotes a green, sustainable future.
    6) Add an overall futuristic LED/neon lighting package to the entire land.
    7) Add more greenery that showcase sustainable agricultural methods.
    8) Revamp existing Buzz Lightyear and Nemo rides into exciting, science-based rides. Disney IP’s that promote scientific advancement (like Big Hero 6, Wall-E, or upcoming films) could work well in Tomorrowland.

It could have also have been easily used to give subtle additions to the nighttime shows by programming the lights to the show somewhat. Especially if this covered parts of tonorrowland speedway which desperately needs a makeover. Could also add more futuristic cars such as a more sports like version of the autotopia car made for Disneyland but could be an electric vehicle. Would make the whole land seem more futuristic

Tron was announced at D23 in 2017 with construction beginning in 2018 with completion 5 years later. Brilliant analysis of the problem, with a great solution that brings a sense of awe, which is vital to keep this land enjoyable, marketable, and true to Disney’s overall vision. May I make a suggestion for a future Broadcast? Could you address the problem of this paste-on addition by speaking about the history of the more complete Tomorrowland updates of the past, including those of Disneyland. I believe it would be incredibly informative to your viewers If you were to review the aesthetic of the 1971 tomorrowland, and then examine the way that the 1994 retro-future-update addressed the Tomorrowland problem. In essence, by coming up with a framing device that gave logic to the variety of styles on display, an Interplanetary expo. There was a real idea there, whatever anyone thought of the aesthetic. I think what I like most about your solution today is that it unifies a bunch of pieces much in the way that the 1967 Tomorrowland peoplemover created a sweeping ribbon throughout that update and made everything seem new.

The Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland issue can’t be solved with canopy because the problem would still be what’s under that canopy. They need a plan to create innovative, novel attractions in place of the Laugh Floor, Stitch’s old spot and the Speedway. Their #1 problem is that they can no longer break away from using their Intellectual Property and do things that accurately fit the land. A ride where we colonize another planet could be fun. Or kind of time travel ride where you jump through time and meet Walt Disney and then jump into the future to see Disney World in 100 years. IDK…but there are so many possibilities if you don’t tie yourself to IP.

Always thought that Tomorrowland needs to be themed more in the way the other lands are. I think the 90s revamp had some of that idea. The idea of the sort of old fashioned future, with rockets and robots, etc was a good one. Having a "transit authority" and having things take place in the Tomorrowland convention center, etc were fun ideas. But why not more like other lands with decorations including the fake store fronts and shops seen in corners of Fantasyland and Liberty Square? You know, a door with a Robot Repair Shop sign or things like that.

I think the Tomorrowland Speedway really holds back the land as it looks dated and smells like old lawnmowers. Disney should replace the cars with electric versions that have LEDs in the wheels like the lightcycle coaster does. A retheme of the queue area would also help. Given Disney's sustainability push, moving to electric would help with that.
While I like the idea of the coaster weaving around other attractions, I wonder if that would have limited redevelopment potential, especially around Carousel of Progress.

Throw in a high end restaurant that’s themed really well, and bobs your uncle. Yes that is all easier said than done, but I mean… tomorrow land is now broken down yesterday land.

Disneyland should take out the Star Wars launch bay thats taking up so much space and add a ride there. Also, the fact that it’s going to take epic universe (an ENTIRE theme park) around the same time it took for Disney to open Tron is crazy. It’s like they’re not even trying anymore 😔

Three suggestions about Tomorrowland. First, Tomorrowland Raceway needs to be replaced for numerous reasons. Smell, noise and for the environmental reasons. It should be replace with another futuristic thrill ride. Second, a handicap elevator to the loading platform for the People Mover. Third, Carousel of Progress needs to be replaced with something more up to date. It is 50 years old and has seen better days. Universal's Epic Universe can draw visitors away from Magic Kingdom Tomorrowland

I've been fanatically watching the Walt Disney Company's corporate hierarchy since the events surround Saul Steinberg and greenmail (1984) and something happened at the shareholder's meeting that none of the Disney commentators seem to be talking about. Company CEO Bob Iger remarked that the WDW parks welcome 50 million guests a year. Now aside from the fact that this means that (on the average) there are 136,000 consumers at WDW every day (wow!) it's also newsworthy to mention that this is the first time in decades that a Disney company representative has publicly referenced a statistic related to attendance. Typically the company does not release those numbers.

I keep say that, the only way to fix the Tomorrowland problem is to base the land & rides on a utopic retrofuturist aesthetic. Make the land into a future we dreamt should've been by now, just not the future we ended up or likely never end up living in.

What did Disney did in 94 was a great solution to their problem. They created a fictional story behind it which allowed them more freedom and flexibility in their attractions so they didn’t feel pressured to change things so much . Now what they did was in the cheapest way possible try to revert to the old ways and it looks terrible. Tomorrowland is still a mess when there’s now 3 different themes mushed together . They have vacant spots in some of their old attractions and have dead spaces in others. And their solutions to these spaces are fundementally the opposite what it’s theme is with cheap ip integration

There are alot of smaller and cheaper things they could do to bring the land up to scratch. Remove the rest of the 1994 theming and return it back to the original 70s theme. Replace the concrete to Match Tron area. New lighting to match with Tron. Definitely get rid of the rocks at the entrance too. It really wouldn't cost them much at all and would just give the whole area a more unified look.

Doing a similar advertising campaign, where it promotes a whole land is not “you can’t top pigs with pigs” territory 😂 NOW IF I were to say “do another New Fantasyland advertising campaign” that would be a sequel. But advertising A New Tomorrowland isn’t the same, as Tomorrowland wouldn’t be changing its name, it would just be an advertising tagline used for the marketing material.

While it would make Tomorrowland a better experience, the problem is, of course, money. The purse strings are so tight that anything that cannot be directly tied to increased revenue will not happen. The only chance, as you alluded to, was to make the changes in conjunction with Tron. And Disney has made some minor changes throughout the land, but mostly removing newer “enhancements.” And at this point, given the capacity problems plaguing all four parks, Disney needs to make serious investments to make up for neglecting that issue for years (i.e. building new attractions). Crowds are hurting the experience of guests spending more and more money, and the only way to address that is to expand.

I still say they dropped the ball in not putting the Tron Coaster in Epcot and the GotG coaster in Tomorrowland. Tron being based in hard Sci-fi computer science would have fit better there and the fantastical Sci-fi GotG would fit better in MK. But Disney no longer cares about the theming in their THEME parks

Such an interesting subject to talk about, i completely agree with the outdated topic of Tomorrowland and how expanding the architecture of Tron would’ve solved this land’s most noticeable issue. It’s insane how Disney took 5/6 years to build a REPLICA of an existing attraction, while universal will build a whole new theme park in that same time frame. Lot to think about

I feel like they didn’t truly commit to the overhaul needed for the rest of the land, they did good steps with removing some of the 93 decor (which i actually quite liked) but a lot of the land is still 93 themed, just painted white. I hope but severely doubt they will, a good way to start is update the space mountain sign (bring back the classic style with the big white spire) change the space ranger spin sign, etc

Better than trying to tie Star Wars to Tomorrowland, I suppose. Might make more sense in a park like EPCOT, but at least Tron deals w/futurism than something like Star Wars, which takes place in a "galaxy far, far away".

This is a great video. I think expanding the canopy concept over much of Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom is a great idea. I think Disney needs to get serious about competing with Universal Parks (Comcast). The speedway needs to be torn down and a new original attraction needs to be in that space. Space Mountain needs to be upgraded like Tokyo Disney is doing. The entire aesthetic look and feel of Tomorrowland should be forward looking in its vision. In other words, bring the concept of a “hope” of a future we don’t see yet, into the design. I want to be drawn into “possibilities.” The current Tomorrowland feels like an old shopping mall complex. Take some of the concepts from the movie “Tomorrowland” and use the architecture of forced perspective that Disney has done before, and create a something great. Spend the capital and speed up construction.

I was just at Disney World last week, and the Tron Cycle fortunately had a soft opening that week! I rode it, and I can safely say it is worth it!
Though one thing you failed to mention about the Tron Coaster: part of the reason why it was such a long wait before its opening was largely due to the pandemic.
I really think Disneyland's Tomorrowland is in worse shape than Disney World's, as that has a lot of things that need to be fixed about it.

I'm glad Tron is placed where it is. Tron isn't Tomorrowland. Tron is a part of Tomorrowland. I don't think it would have been wise at all to extend the canopy throughout the land. I personally think Tron enhances the Tomorrowland experience. Plus Disney has been upgrading parts of Tomorrowland for the past several years. From the paint, carousel of progress updates, peoplemover narration and lighting the land is on the right track. Now if they can just place another attraction in the former alien encounter space i would be happy.

Great video and perspective! Tomorrowland has been lagging behind the other areas of Magic Kingdom for decades now. It’s outdated, poorly maintained and just doesn’t have the same ‘Disney’ feel as the other lands.
Tron has definitely made the age of Tomorrowland stand out like a sore thumb. With it finally open, it would be best to theme the rest of the land to cohesively mirror the modern/sleek design elements of Tron.
Standing under Tron, seeing the lightcycles go by, and then turning to see the old raceway cars go by… just screams it’s time to massively overhaul Tomorrowland.
Wishful thinking I know, as they’ll likely take the boost to the area with Tron and consider Tomorrowland good to go for years to come.
P.S. The interior of Space Mountain is so outdated, and is yet another element of Tomorrowland that screams for a complete make over!!

To be frank, I would solve the "Tomorrowland Problem" by changing what we mean by calling it "Tomorrowland." Instead of trying to pretend that Tomorrowland is supposed to represent some form of future (whether it's our future or what people from the 1950's thought the future could be), I'd make the basis behind Tomorrowland that it's just a realm of science fiction. That way, not only would you avoid having to pretend that things they showcase totally don't exist already, but it's less of a problem for IPs like Monster's Inc, Lilo and Stitch, and Toy Story/Buzz Lightyear to fit into the land and can open the doors for other IPs like WALL-E, Big Hero 6, and more to be brought in if Disney Imagineering decides to do so.
