- Fed up of the fetters of the mainstream student press, a group of Oxford students have set up Versa, a sparky, no-holds-barred paper set on bursting ideological balloons. We spoke to former editors Eleanor Sharman and Jake Hurfurt about student-press freedom, victim feminism and the neocolonialism of campus censorship.
Don't miss spiked's London conference, The New Intolerance on Campus, on 17 February 2016.

Nice to see students actually wanting to have an Intellectual environment at college instead of cowering to a safe space, don't desist no matter how much hate you get.
That is a smart woman. She will go far.
Fair play. Don't be bullied!
Excellent interview. Looking for Eleanor's article online now!
To paraphrase a quote that is often attributed to the 18th century French philosopher and author Voltaire: 'I may not agree with what you say, but I defend to the death your right to say it' - It is odd that both Fascists and Communists and the Liberal extremists, together with religious fanatics and other weak minded individuals all seem to restrict freedom of expression - what are they afraid of?
Tell'em
Good for them.
awesome stuff! IMO, the only the disabled & traumatized should be protected from harm of any kind. i.e. rape victims, people with depression. but if you're just too pvssy to handle reality, you should get a blast of harsh truths daily!
I doubt any left papers in UK or oxford speak about the horrors of Sharia style culture that young women face in UK muslim communities. they need to be fought for and these kids seem to have the balls to do so. cheers to that.
It's not a 'sharia' problem. It's a *cultural* problem that exists within *some* Muslim communities.
3:41 maybe they're right
New term "Recreational Offence" kind of like "recreational drugs" except the drugs are real.
The stridency of those on the left makes me doubt how well they thought out their views. It seems brittle, like it might break if it was tapped very hard. Personally, I'm very eclectic in my views. I hated the Democrats for not responding vigorously enough to the Soviet military buildup, and I hate the Republicans for not taking man made climate change seriously. I'm an equal opportunity hater.
So basically, we need to let all fascists have a platform?
The Commies the facists why not? better than having an echo camber circle jerk
And of course you will decide who the fascists are, right?
OKnotOK09 You are the problem. None of the articles they said they had written advocated any bigoted views, but because they disagree with you, you deem them fascists. If the feminist movement actually listened and engaged with those who disagree with them, I would respect them a lot more.
Almost all feminists lack any independent will or intelligence of their own as they always get offended at the same thing and claim that the thing that offended them is fascist. The irony is, feminists are never given an opportunity to think for themselves, as if they do they are often bullied by other feminists, which ironically follows the example of Naziism, fascism etc
OKnotOK09 You do know that fascist regimes practised censorship, right? Stop using it as a buzzword, it's embarrassing.
Yes, because without debate how do rational people make a case for opposing views?
Ffs. Giving intolerant people a platform threatens the system - the freedom of speech and tolerance we have gained. Are you completely clueless lmao there's a difference between free speech and hate speech
Whats the difference?
No it doesn't. This misconception is the root of the whole problem. Basically you are saying: People can't be allowed to hear these things, because if they do they will abandon all reason and social progress we have gained to flock to the fascists. You are infantilizing them, implying they are stupid and lack the capability of critical thinking and are basically all fascists at heart, while you are the intelligent overlord who has to protect those stupid stupid little sheep from doing dumb things. That's patronizing and arrogant and at the same time just reinforces the belief of being censored and oppressed of the people you are denying their platform while showing to people that they maybe have kind of a point when they claim these things.
so if I say I hate someone is that a crime?
To paraphrase a quote that is often attributed to the 18th century French philosopher and author Voltaire: 'I may not agree with what you say, but I defend to the death your right to say it' - It is odd that both Fascists and Communists and the Liberal extremists, together with religious fanatics and other weak minded individuals all seem to restrict freedom of expression - what are they afraid of?
Who gets to choose what’s a hateful thing to say? Just a guess here, but I’ll bet it’s people like u that hold the moral authority on what wrong think is. Amiright?
