  • Directed by Michael Smith, featuring Mike Dream, Saafir, and Hobo Junction.
In 1992, 22-year-old rising rap artist Jesse Rahim Hall was shot and killed in front of his home in East Oakland, California. The assailant, also a young Black male, was never identified, and no one has been charged with the crime. Jesse’s story sadly echoes that of many young Black men in America for whom the threat of violence is commonplace. In this uncompromising local documentary, a series of interviews with family and friends gives shape to a complex individual-a rapper, young father, friend and son whose death leaves another hole in this already battered community.
    -Mimi Brody
    POV SEASON 10
    FEATURE FILM | 06/24/1997
America is a dangerous place for young black men. With excruciating tenderness, filmmaker Michael Smith breathes life into the headlines and homicide statistics to capture stirring echoes of memory and loss. This hauntingly rhythmic piece presents an incisive view of the frayed lives left behind after the death of Jesse Hall, a young hip-hop artist from Oakland whose voice could not be silenced by the snap of a clip and a pull on the trigger.

I been in Oakland all my life. That mural in the 100’s on E14th has always been a mystery to me. I’m glad I found this documentary. That mural is still up there.

One of my last memories of him is when he stopped by my crib and he invited me to a studio session by Knowland. I ended up not goin...
That session was Quest For Survival.
It was me up now that I didn't go.

I wonder if the rapper Saafir had something to do with Plan Bee's death. Saafir's career seemed to have blown up shortly after the murder of Jesse (Touring with Digital Underground, being featured heavily on their LP-The Body Hat Syndrome, living with 2Pac, acting in Menace II Society, being signed to a major label). 22:02 is a chilling remark, considering Saafir later was signed to Quincy Jones QWest records, releasing Boxcar Sessions. could be a coincidence, but I feel that blood is required in the entertainment industry. This is of course, my opinion. This is an excellent documentary.

@@Watani_Fahim True, but who knows what goes on in people's minds. Dig this: I remember reading a small Source article on Saafir ("Microphone Check in Dec '94 issue). He was talking about his album. He said that his song, "Worship the Dick" was inspired by him in a room watching two women- fucking each on an altar while practicing witchcraft. As a SoCal hood youth, that blew my mind. Sounded like some hippie shit. I know he was from the Bay, but damn!
