Well 1950s and early 1960s music WAS the oldies music back in the 80's. Just like 80's music is considered oldies music today. What's also interesting is that an era that used alot of hairspray such as the 80's made a movie set in another era that used a lot of hairspray in the early 60's.
Love this film! I saw it on the big screen in New Jersey when it was first released and I've rarely seen an audience love a movie so much. When Tracy flashes the friendship ring Link gave her the place went nuts! The musical version has its charms but this movie is so full of love and full of John Waters' bizarre touches.
I have twice TRIED to watch the remake, which is taken from the Broadway show, not the original, and I just stare at the screen. I just saw this trailer and the shot of Divine hopping up and doing the twist just made me go bonkers! I want to see THIS movie.
Immediately after watching this film for the first time in a theater, I drove directly to a record store - probably Tower Records - and bought the soundtrack cassette, then played it immediately in my car.
If you've seen the remake Ricky Lake & Jerry Stiller make appearances. Ricky Lake is one of the judges in the contest. Jerry Stiller plays Mr. Pinky who owns Pinkys Dress shop.
This is the pure 80's and 60s style of movie that you ever seen before the great big event Hairspray Original 1988 you Love ❤ 😍 💖 ❣ 💕 💘 as much that I love ❤ 😍 💖 ❣ 💕 💘 too this movie of Hairspray Original 1988 rocks it
I was living down the street from "the Abenue," where Tracy says "welcome to the 60s," when this movie was made. Didn't see any of the production, though. But I saw the movie at the Senator Theater the second night it was ever shown. All the kids in the audience who were extras in the movie screamed whenever they showed up on the screen.
I love how it was turned into a musical and then back into a movie. Also, is it just me, or does amber look exactly the same in 2007 as she did in 1988?
I’m not sure that they both look alike that much, but both actresses would coincidentally later die their hair red, and make it their trademark hair color
Anyone who reads this, if you ever introduce anyone whos never seen a John Waters movie, this will always be movie number 1 on the itinerary, then Serial Mom, then Polyester, then Cry Baby and so fourth..
Sorry but this is way way better than the musical/remake versions. It has a good premise for musical but still love this John Waters' version. The music, the fashion feel even more authentic to the era than the ones.
I would give my vote for this best movie and of course it has the better picture the 80s and 60s classic music and songs the acting the drama the music the dancing the songs the colour the set and the story it's just is awesome and it rocks
Tell you something you don't know: John Waters considered making a sequel to "Pink Flamingos" entitled "Flamingos Forever", which would've taken place 15 years after the events of the first movie. Three "Hairspray" characters were originally written for "Flamingos Forever": Wilbur (Raymond Marble in the sequel), Tracy (one of the children Wlbur's wife Vera kidnapped), and Inez (one of Divine's reporters). However, the sequel was not made because Divine wanted to shift his attention to male roles, while Edith Massey passed away in 1984.

Divine
1945-1988
fascinating: in the 80s they used to make movies about the 50s, and now we do movies bout the 80s lol
And in the 50s they made movies set in the 20s sometimes, like Singing in the Rain.

In the '50s, they also did movies set in the 1980s and even 2020.
It’s about nostalgia ❤❤
And grease and back to the future

Shawn Cullen umm it always happens. This movie ain't that special. The 2007 one is much better.

People always ask me why I don’t believe in god. My answer is the fact that I wasn’t there to also do that is proof enough there is no god😢

we watched this movie at school and we loved it
Sundance Film festival listed this as one of 5 options to vote for viewing this summer, hence why I am here. I never saw this, but now I want to.

John Waters is a great critic of American bourgeois society - and also a great artist!
This is the best Hairspray there is go for the Original classic of Hairspray 1988
One of the best ever. All praise John Waters!
Me too i just love ❤ 😍 💖 ❣ 💕 💘 this movie of
Hairspray Original 1988 as well
I would give it a 10 out of 10 and 100 score for the best movie of all time
After all these years, I do not believe I have ever seen the trailer. Takes me back. Pia Z. was great in Hairspray.

Brittany Snow in 2007 version, Colleen Fitzpatrick (AKA “Vitamin C”) in the original
Imagine if they got Amber’s original actress to play Velma

I only wish this movie of Hairspray Original 1988
Might be on The Big screen in the Cinema someday and I know it would someday
So much style!❤
I'm surprised that the person responsible for this movie is also responsible for Pink Flamingos.
Me too♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I still love watching it this movie. My eldest likes the musical version
My favorite movie in the world
I remember liking Kim Webb's portrayal of the dancer "Carmelita" and her peroxided bangs and her brief use of "falsies".
“Let’s get naked and smoke” best part
This movie is 15 years older then me now it's 35 years old

Uncle is wicked
I love Divine and John Waters!!
Don't we all.
It's hilarious that the 1980s would judge any other decade on their hairdos
Divines greatest role.
I like how when the actors were listed, the males had blue stars, while the females had purple.
funny how devine is purple
A classic. John Waters is the best!
When you remember this is the director who made “Pink Flamingos”: 👁️👄👁️
Me encanta el tráiler
John waters is really a crazy person, making crazy movies

Amber looks exactly the same as the one in 2007
I didn't even know that was Ricki Lake until I saw her name. She looks so change in here
This is before the musical and its 2007 film adaptation.

Way better
@@caciejadeg Yes, the 1988 version WAS way better. The remake was watered down and witless.
pinkdungeon it’s not even entirely the same. The remake is based off of the broadway play.
The World needs the 2007 Remake, It's Well-done but this is also a Great Movie.
Song 1:38? Plis :c
